The safest fix is to identify the program that needs it and repair or reinstall that program with its original, matching installer rather than downloading a loose DLL.
What this file actually does
msmdcube.dll belongs to the legacy Microsoft PivotTable Service components associated with SQL Server OLAP Services and SQL Server 2000-era client software. Older reporting, database, Office, and OLAP applications could install or redistribute these components.

Microsoft documentation identified Ptslite.exe and Ptsfull.exe as the relevant installers. They were supplied with SQL Server 2000 media under the MsolapInstallPts folder. Ptsfull.exe also installed Microsoft Data Access Components.
This is not normally a Windows System32 file. Historical installation notes placed it under:

On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit legacy application may instead use the corresponding Program Files (x86) location. The exact folder depends on the original installer.
The commonly reported historical file is a 32-bit component, but an indexed version or file size should not be treated as proof that an arbitrary downloaded copy is correct. The calling application, its architecture, and its complete dependency set matter more than the filename alone.
Microsoft no longer provides a verified current standalone download for msmdcube.dll, Ptslite.exe, or Ptsfull.exe. SQL Server 2000 support ended on April 9, 2013, so recovery may require original licensed media, a vendor installer, or migration to supported software.

Fix msmdcube.dll errors safely
1. Identify the application that is producing the error
Do not begin by searching Windows folders. The executable that displays the message determines which installer and architecture you need.
Write down:
- The exact error text
- The program name and version, if shown
- What changed immediately beforehand
- Whether the error appears during startup, installation, or registration
- Whether the program is old Office, a reporting tool, a database client, or another OLAP application
If the message appears in an installer, note which product is being installed. For an already installed application, open Task Manager when the error appears:
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Processes or Details.
- Look for the application that starts immediately before the error.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location, if available.
- Record the application name and installation folder.
You can also check Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search for old database, reporting, Office, or vendor software.
If no program name is visible, inspect the application’s installation log or use a trusted diagnostic tool such as Process Explorer to identify the executable requesting the file. Do not assume that every program mentioning msmdcube.dll requires the same installer.

On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the application that displays the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and open the application again.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Apps & features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options or Modify, depending on the installer.
- Select Repair and follow the prompts.
For older desktop software, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features:
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Change, Modify, or Repair.
- Allow the installer to make changes.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
If Repair is unavailable or the error remains, uninstall and reinstall the program from its legitimate original installer. Back up the program’s data first. A reinstall from the vendor’s media is preferable to copying msmdcube.dll from another computer because it restores the matching files and registration together.
3. Install the matching PivotTable Service component
If the application specifically requires Microsoft PivotTable or OLAP components, look for the original installation media supplied with that application or with the licensed SQL Server 2000 package.
The historical packages were named:
Ptslite.exePtsfull.exe
Use only media that you can verify belongs to the application and has not been modified. Do not mix files from unrelated SQL Server, Office, or database installations.
If the installer contains an optional Analysis Services, OLAP, PivotTable, or client components section:
- Start the installer as an administrator.
- Choose Custom or Modify setup.
- Select the PivotTable or OLAP client component.
- Allow the installer to complete.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application.
The old installer may fail on a modern Windows release even when the media is genuine. If it does, record the exact installer error rather than repeatedly copying files. The application may require an older supported environment.
4. Match the application’s architecture
A 32-bit legacy application generally needs the 32-bit PivotTable component, even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Installing a 64-bit replacement, or placing a 32-bit file in an arbitrary system directory, will not correct that mismatch.

To check the program architecture:
- Start the affected program, if it opens far enough.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if that column is available.
- Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
On some Windows versions, a 32-bit process is marked with a suffix such as *32. The installer documentation or application vendor may provide a more reliable answer.

Do not manually place the file in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those folders have specific architecture meanings, and putting a DLL in the wrong location can make troubleshooting harder or affect another application.
5. Check whether related files are missing
A message naming msmdcube.dll can actually be caused by another missing dependency. The historical PivotTable Service set also included:
msmdgdrv.dll
msolap.dll
msolapui.dll
msolapr.dll
msvbvm60.dll
Do not download these files individually. Instead:
- Open the affected application’s installer.
- Choose Repair or Modify.
- Select the complete database, OLAP, or PivotTable client feature.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
If the application was removed and partially restored from a backup, reinstall it from clean installation media. A backup may contain the main executable without the shared components and registration information it needs.
6. Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine an old component, especially when the file came from an old installer or an incomplete archive. Restore it only when you can verify its source.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Find the event associated with
msmdcube.dll. - Review the file path and detection details.
- Confirm that the file came from the legitimate application installer.
- Scan the original installer before using it.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again. If the source cannot be verified, do not restore the file. Reinstall the application from clean, legitimate media instead.
7. Repair broader Windows component corruption
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They are not a guaranteed source for msmdcube.dll, because this file is generally an application component rather than a current protected Windows file.
Install pending Windows updates first, then open an elevated Command Prompt:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes when prompted.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the application. Microsoft documents these commands for repairing Windows system files. If they report that Windows was repaired but the same application still reports msmdcube.dll, return to the application repair or reinstall step.

When manually running SFC and DISM becomes repetitive and you need help identifying which Windows components are actually damaged, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing what it finds; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the program that owns msmdcube.dll remains the definitive fix for this file.
8. Do not use Device Manager or Windows Features for this DLL
Device Manager manages hardware drivers, not application DLLs. Windows Features installs optional Windows components, but it does not provide a current standalone PivotTable Service package.
You can still check them when troubleshooting a wider problem:

- Windows Features: press
Win+R, typeoptionalfeatures, and press Enter.
Neither location should be expected to restore msmdcube.dll. Do not enable unrelated features as a substitute for repairing the original application.
If the error began after a hardware or chipset change, install drivers only from the computer or hardware manufacturer. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; the driver installation is handled by the full version. Drivers are unlikely to supply msmdcube.dll, so reinstalling the original application remains the relevant repair.
9. Use regsvr32 only for a genuine registration error
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It may be relevant when the original PivotTable installer reports a registration failure, but manually registering a copied DLL does not install its dependencies or correct an architecture mismatch.
If you have a verified file from the original installer and the application documentation specifically requires registration, open Command Prompt as administrator and use the regsvr32 executable matching the DLL architecture. On 64-bit Windows:
- 64-bit registration tool:
C:WindowsSystem32regsvr32.exe "full-path-to-msmdcube.dll"
- 32-bit registration tool:
C:WindowsSysWOW64regsvr32.exe "full-path-to-msmdcube.dll"
The folder names are counterintuitive: System32 contains the 64-bit tool, while SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit tool on 64-bit Windows.
If registration fails, stop rather than trying random switches. The cause may be a missing dependency, unsupported legacy code, insufficient permissions, or the wrong architecture. Re-run the complete original installer instead.

Random DLL download pages can provide:
- Malware or tampered files
- The wrong architecture
- An incompatible historical build
- A file with missing dependencies
- A DLL that works only until another component fails
Copying the file into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder can also create version conflicts. It does not repair the installer, shared-file registration, or related OLAP components.

Use the original application installer, licensed SQL Server media, or a vendor-provided package instead. Microsoft does not currently provide a verified standalone download for this file.
When the old application will not run on Windows 10 or 11
If repair and reinstall fail, the program may be incompatible with the current Windows release. SQL Server 2000-era PivotTable components were built for an older software environment, and registration workarounds do not make unsupported software reliable.
At that point:
- Check whether the application vendor provides a supported update or migration path.
- Export or migrate the data to a current application where possible.
- Preserve the original installer and license information.
- Use a properly isolated virtual machine running a compatible older Windows version only when necessary.
- Avoid exposing unsupported software directly to untrusted networks.
FAQ
Is msmdcube.dll part of Windows?
No evidence indicates that it is a normal Windows component. It belongs to legacy Microsoft PivotTable and OLAP client software installed by an application or database package.
Which programs may need it?
SQL Server OLAP Services and PivotTable Services are the primary historical associations. Older Office, reporting, database, and OLAP applications may also have redistributed or depended on it. Office 2000 and PhotoDraw installation failures have been reported, but that does not mean every Office installation requires this file.
Should I put it in System32?
No. The correct location depends on the original installer and the calling program’s architecture. Install the complete matching component instead.

A dependency of msmdcube.dll may be missing. The message does not always mean that the named file itself is absent.
Can SFC restore it?
Usually not. SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components, while msmdcube.dll is generally an application file.
Is regsvr32 the fix?
Only when a legitimate installer or application specifically requires registration. It cannot replace the complete PivotTable component installation.
When should I stop repairing it?
Stop when the original installer will not run, the application is unsupported, or repeated registration attempts fail. Migration or an isolated virtual machine is safer than continually copying DLLs from unverified sources.
