| 32-bit | 6.0.6000.16386 | 7.6 MB |
A newer version is not automatically the correct version. The required copy must match the Windows build, architecture, language resources, or application that expects it.
Check where Windows expects the file
Use File Explorer or the error’s full path to determine the owner:
- A Windows system directory or a path under
WinSxSpoints toward Windows servicing. - An SQL Server path containing an
MSSQL...folder andBinnpoints toward SQL Server. - A game or application installation directory points toward that application.
- A file that exists in one location but is missing from another may indicate a 32-bit/64-bit mismatch or a missing dependency.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Do not choose a directory based only on its name, and do not copy the file between them.

Fix 1: Repair Windows components
Use this route when the file was expected in a Windows directory, multiple programs fail, or the problem began after an interrupted update, disk issue, or cleanup operation.
Install pending Windows updates
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Start the affected program again.
If Windows Update repeatedly fails, repair the component store before trying the update again.
Run DISM, then System File Checker
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- In the same administrator window, run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies when a valid component-store source is available. Running SFC first can leave it without a usable repair source, so use DISM first.

Success usually means that the application starts without the missing-file message, or that SFC reports no integrity violations or successfully repaired damaged files.
If SFC says it could not repair some files, review:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
Do not assume that SFC can repair a copy inside an application folder. It repairs protected Windows resources, not arbitrary files installed by every program.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing whether the file is Windows-owned can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for repair issues and show what needs attention, while its full version performs the repair; it is optional, and Windows servicing remains the supported route for a Windows component.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse matching installation media if DISM cannot find repair files
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, use matching Windows installation media.
- Obtain installation media for the installed Windows edition and language from Microsoft’s Windows installation media page.
- Note the drive letter assigned to the mounted ISO or USB drive. In the example below, it is
X:. - Open Terminal (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:X:sourcesinstall.wim /LimitAccess
- Replace
X:with the actual media drive letter. - Run
sfc /scannowagain after DISM completes. - Restart Windows.
The source must match the installed edition, language, and architecture. A mismatched image can fail to repair the component or introduce another servicing problem. If the media contains install.esd rather than install.wim, do not guess at a command from an unrelated source. Use Microsoft’s DISM documentation or obtain media with a compatible image format.
Fix 2: Repair the program that owns the file
If only one application or game reports the error and the file belongs in that program’s directory, repair that installation rather than changing Windows folders.
Use the application’s built-in repair
Look for Repair, Verify files, Scan and repair, or Verify integrity in the program’s launcher.
For a Microsoft Store application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If it still fails, return to the same page and use Reset, if available.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Select the application.
- Choose Modify or Repair, if offered.
- Complete the vendor’s installer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer or launcher. Do not preserve a questionable DLL by copying it into the new installation.

If the error began after antivirus software removed the file, check quarantine before reinstalling.
Check antivirus quarantine
A legitimate file can be quarantined, but do not assume a detection is a false positive.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the relevant detection.
- Confirm the original path and the application that owned it.
- Check the file’s digital signature and product provenance.
- Run a full scan before restoring anything.
Microsoft documents the restore process in Protection History. Restore the file only when its location, signer, and owning installation are credible. If the file was in an unexpected temporary folder or an unfamiliar application directory, leave it quarantined and reinstall the legitimate program instead.
Fix 3: Repair SQL Server Full-Text Search
Microsoft documents NlsLexicons0024.dll among legacy SQL Server Full-Text Search version 1 binaries. If the file was expected under an SQL Server MSSQL...Binn directory, repair the relevant SQL Server installation or Full-Text Search feature.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the relevant Microsoft SQL Server installation.
- Choose Uninstall/Change.
- In SQL Server Setup, select Maintenance.
- Choose Repair.
- Select the affected instance and complete the wizard.
- Restart SQL Server services if Setup requests it.
- Test the full-text query or catalog that failed.
Do not replace the SQL Server copy with one taken from Windows. SQL Server’s binaries, servicing state, and full-text index version must remain consistent.
SQL Server 2025 upgrade issue
SQL Server 2022 and earlier use version 1 full-text components. SQL Server 2025 removes the legacy version 1 binaries from the installation. If the error began during an upgrade to SQL Server 2025, manually restoring NlsLexicons0024.dll is not the correct migration strategy.
First identify whether version 1 full-text indexes remain:
SELECT *
FROM sys.database_scoped_configurations
WHERE [name] = 'FULLTEXT_INDEX_VERSION';
Follow Microsoft’s SQL Server full-text index version upgrade guidance for migration, rebuilding, or compatibility steps. A full-text catalog may need to be rebuilt, for example:
ALTER FULLTEXT CATALOG [FtCatalog] REBUILD;
Replace FtCatalog with the actual catalog name. Take the database and SQL Server upgrade path into account before running a rebuild in production.
Fix 4: Check architecture and dependencies
A 32-bit application can require the x86 copy even on 64-bit Windows. Installing or copying a 64-bit file will not satisfy a 32-bit process.
Check the application’s documentation, installation path, or executable architecture. If the file exists but Windows says it is “not designed to run on Windows,” suspect:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- A wrong-architecture copy
- A damaged file
- An incompatible application copy
- A missing dependency reported under the named DLL
“Module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency of nlslexicons0024.dll is missing. The named file is not always the missing object.
Do not install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET solely because this filename appears. There is no identified Microsoft runtime package that officially distributes this file.

If files are disappearing, Windows is crashing, or the problem affects unrelated programs, run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options.
- Run Full scan.
- If malware is suspected, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
Use Microsoft’s Defender scan guidance for the available scan choices.

- Select a restore point from before the problem.
- Review the affected programs.
- Complete System Restore and test Windows.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal files.
What not to do
Do not download a random DLL
Unaffiliated DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible version, or a file that does not match the owner’s servicing system. A replacement may silence one message while leaving the damaged application or component store untouched.
Use Windows servicing, matching installation media, the official application installer, or the SQL Server installation and migration process instead.
Do not run regsvr32 on this file
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents it as a registration command, not a general missing-DLL repair tool.
NlsLexicons0024.dll is a language lexicon and data component, not a documented COM server. Running this is normally inappropriate:
regsvr32 nlslexicons0024.dll
It may produce an entry-point or registration error and cannot repair a missing dependency.
Do not copy files into System32 or SysWOW64
Manual copying is appropriate only in a controlled, supported situation, such as restoring a verified file from matching Windows media or an identical SQL Server installation. Copying a downloaded file into a system directory can create architecture mismatches, version conflicts, malware exposure, and future servicing failures.

Driver-related symptoms
A driver update will not normally restore a missing language lexicon. Use Device Manager only when the same incident also includes hardware failures, display problems, storage errors, or a device that stopped working.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver or Roll Back Driver only when the device problem matches the timing of the DLL error.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Avoid updating unrelated drivers as a substitute for repairing Windows or the owning application. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale drivers and identify what needs attention, while its full version installs updates; it is optional and does not replace application repair or SQL Server migration.
FAQ
Is nlslexicons0024.dll a Windows file?
It can be part of legacy Windows natural-language resources, but Microsoft also documents it as a legacy SQL Server Full-Text Search component. Do not assume every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation should contain it.
Is it a Visual C++ or DirectX file?
No identified Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET package officially distributes this file.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I choose the newest version?
No. Match the file to the Windows build, architecture, language resources, or application installation that requires it.
Can I fix it with System File Checker?
SFC can repair a protected Windows copy after DISM repairs the component store. It will not reliably repair an arbitrary copy installed by a game, application, or SQL Server.
What if the error appeared after a SQL Server 2025 upgrade?
Check for legacy version 1 full-text indexes and follow Microsoft’s migration or rebuild guidance. Copying the old DLL back into SQL Server is not the supported fix.
When should I contact support?
Escalate to the application vendor or Microsoft when the owner is unclear, repair media does not match the installation, SQL Server upgrade migration fails, or the file’s signature and path cannot be verified.
