msosvabw.dll Not Found: Safe Office Repair on Windows 11/10

msosvabw.dll is an Office component called the Address Book Wrapper control, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the Microsoft Office installation that requested it. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website or copy one into System32; that can introduce the wrong version, architecture, or malware without repairing the underlying Office installation.

What this file actually does

msosvabw.dll supplies Microsoft Office’s Address Book Wrapper control, an ActiveX component used by older Office-related software for browsing and selecting contacts. Microsoft documents the file and its AddrBookWrapper object in its documentation for the Spreadsheet Launcher control.

It is an Office file, not a normal Windows system component, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET library. It should normally be restored by the Office installer that originally supplied it.

The name Microsoft Office 10 also causes confusion. In historical file descriptions, “Office 10” usually refers to the version 10 product family, commonly known as Office XP. It does not automatically mean Office 2010, whose internal major version is 14. The exact Office product requesting the file matters more than the label shown by an old file index.

Microsoft Windows 11 (USB)
  • Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
  • Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
  • Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
  • Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
  • Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)

Historical records describe this as a 32-bit Win32 control, but you should verify the architecture from the installed application and its installation media rather than trusting a download page. A 64-bit DLL with the same filename will not make a 32-bit ActiveX control compatible with 64-bit Office.

Symptoms and likely causes

The error may appear when starting Office, Outlook, an old contact-import utility, a SharePoint-connected application, or another program that still uses an Office component. A modern unrelated game or utility claiming to need this file deserves extra scrutiny because the documented purpose is Office address-book integration.

What you see Most likely cause Best first action
Error appears when opening Office or Outlook Damaged or incomplete Office installation Repair Office
Error began after an Office upgrade or uninstall Old application or add-in still points to the removed control Identify and repair or remove the old application
Error started after changing Office architecture 32-bit ActiveX control versus 64-bit Office incompatibility Use compatible 32-bit Office or replace the legacy software
File disappeared suddenly Antivirus quarantine or cleanup Check Windows Security Protection history
“The specified module could not be found” The DLL or one of its dependencies is missing Repair Office and identify the requesting executable
“Entry point not found” or “not designed to run on Windows” Wrong-version, damaged, or incompatible DLL Remove the replacement and repair the original installation
Only one older program fails That program has its own missing or damaged Office integration Reinstall that exact program
Failure began after a system change Corruption or a bad installation state Try System Restore after repairing the application

Common Windows loader messages include “msosvabw.dll was not found,” “The application failed to start because msosvabw.dll is missing,” “Error loading msosvabw.dll,” and “msosvabw.dll could not be located.” These are general loader messages, not a Microsoft-published error list specific to this file.

Also, “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. A dependency required by that DLL may be missing instead.

Fix 1: Identify the application requesting the file

Before changing files, find out what is actually launching the error. This prevents you from repairing the wrong Office version or putting an old component back on a system that no longer needs it.

Check these locations:

  1. Read the full error dialog. Some dialogs name the executable or installation folder.
  2. Right-click the shortcut that triggers the error and select Properties.
  3. On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target and Start in.
  4. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  5. Start the failing program again and watch the Processes or Details tab for the process that appears.
  6. Right-click a matching process and select Open file location.

If the executable is an old Office, Outlook, SharePoint, or contact-management program, repair that installation first. If it belongs to software you no longer use, uninstalling the obsolete program or removing its startup entry is safer than restoring the DLL globally.

You can also check Settings > System > About to confirm whether Windows is 64-bit. That tells you the Windows architecture, not necessarily the architecture of Office or the failing application. Office’s own architecture must be checked in its installation details or documentation.

Fix 2: Repair Microsoft Office

Repair is the most likely solution when the error occurs while opening Office, Outlook, or an Office-integrated program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 11 and Microsoft 365 or Click-to-Run Office

  1. Save your work and close all Office programs.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps.
  5. Find Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or the relevant Office product.
  6. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  7. Choose Modify.
  8. If offered, select Quick Repair and choose Repair.
  9. Restart Windows.
  10. Test the program that produced the error.

Quick Repair is a useful first pass because it normally completes without downloading the complete Office installation.

If the error remains, repeat the same steps and select Online Repair instead. Online Repair replaces and repairs the complete Office installation, so it can take longer and may require sign-in or installation files.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Apps & features.
  4. Select the Office product.
  5. Choose Modify.
  6. Run Quick Repair first.
  7. Restart Windows and test the failing application.
  8. If it still fails, run Online Repair.

The exact labels can vary between Microsoft 365, Click-to-Run, and MSI-based installations. If the product offers Repair instead of Quick Repair and Online Repair, choose Repair.

Older MSI-based Office

For Office XP, Office 2003, or another older MSI installation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs.
  3. Select Programs and Features.
  4. Select the Microsoft Office entry.
  5. Choose Change.
  6. Select Repair or the maintenance option.
  7. Follow the setup wizard.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Test the application again.

If the old installer requests the original CD, network location, or organization-managed installation source, use that genuine source. Do not substitute a DLL downloaded from another location.

How to confirm that repair worked

Repair succeeded if the original application opens without the loader message and the address-book or contact-selection function works normally. If Office opens but the error returns only when using a particular add-in, the add-in or its legacy integration may be the actual requester.

If repair completes but the error remains, continue with the bitness and quarantine checks below. Do not assume that repeatedly running repair will correct a 32-bit and 64-bit incompatibility.

Fix 3: Reinstall the exact Office or legacy application

Use a reinstall when repair fails, the installation was partially removed, or the error began after an Office migration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First identify whether the failing program is:

  • Microsoft Office or Outlook
  • A legacy contact-import or address-book utility
  • A SharePoint-integrated Office application
  • An add-in or business application that embeds Office controls

Then do the following:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
  2. Select the exact product.
  3. Choose Uninstall only when you have the original installation source or a supported reinstall path.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Install the same product from genuine Microsoft media, an authorized Microsoft account, or your organization’s managed deployment source.
  6. Restart again.
  7. Test the program before reinstalling optional add-ins.

For older Office media, run the original setup program and select its maintenance or installation option. If the application is no longer supported and its media is unavailable, migrating the data to a supported replacement may be safer than sourcing one old DLL.

A failed Office upgrade can leave an old shortcut, startup item, COM registration, or add-in still requesting msosvabw.dll. If the old software is no longer needed, remove that obsolete software instead of restoring the component globally.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

This is particularly important for an old ActiveX control. Microsoft states that existing 32-bit ActiveX controls are not compatible with 64-bit Office processes.

Rank #2
Microsoft Windows 11 PRO (Ingles) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB Flash Drive
  • MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE

A typical mismatch looks like this:

  • Windows is 64-bit.
  • The old application or Office control is 32-bit.
  • Office was changed to 64-bit.
  • The legacy program still expects a 32-bit ActiveX control.

Installing a 64-bit file with the same name does not solve that problem. The supported choices are to use compatible 32-bit Office for the legacy solution or replace and update the application or control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before changing architecture:

  1. Confirm which application is requesting the file.
  2. Check whether that application requires 32-bit Office.
  3. Back up documents, templates, Outlook data, and add-in installers.
  4. Uninstall the existing Office architecture.
  5. Install the compatible architecture from a genuine Microsoft source.

Microsoft requires one Office architecture to be removed before switching to the other. Do not keep mixed 32-bit and 64-bit Office installations unless the specific Microsoft installation guidance supports that arrangement.

If the error began immediately after moving from 32-bit to 64-bit Office, reverting to compatible 32-bit Office may be the correct fix. If the old program is no longer business-critical, updating or replacing it is the better long-term solution.

Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine

If the file worked previously and disappeared after a security scan, check whether Microsoft Defender quarantined it.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections and quarantined items.
  5. Expand an entry to see its path and detection details.

Restore a quarantined file only when all of the following are true:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • It came from a known Office installation.
  • The path and application are expected.
  • You have confirmed the detection is a false positive.
  • Your security administrator or trusted IT process approves the restoration.

Do not disable antivirus protection simply to install an unverified DLL. If the file is legitimate but repeatedly removed, repair or reinstall Office from its original source after resolving the detection.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

msosvabw.dll belongs to Office, so SFC does not normally reinstall it. These commands are secondary checks for Windows corruption that could prevent an otherwise valid Office component or dependency from loading.

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the failing application.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command should be treated as a substitute for Office Repair.

If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, test the program again. If both commands complete without fixing the error, return to Office repair, application reinstallation, and architecture diagnosis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When manually repeating SFC and DISM becomes guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; its full repair capability is optional, and repairing or reinstalling the original Office product remains the definitive fix for an Office-owned DLL.

Fix 7: Use regsvr32 only when registration is the demonstrated problem

Because msosvabw.dll is described as an ActiveX control, registration can be relevant. However, registration does not restore a missing file, repair corrupted contents, fix missing dependencies, or make a 32-bit control work inside 64-bit Office.

The Office installer should normally register the control. Try manual registration only when:

  • The file exists in the correct Office installation directory.
  • Office repair has already completed.
  • The error specifically concerns COM or ActiveX registration.
  • You know which architecture the DLL uses.

On 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64regsvr32.exe is the 32-bit registration tool. For a 32-bit DLL, an example is:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
"%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe" "C:pathtomsosvabw.dll"

Replace the path with the real path to the Office-owned file. Do not type that example unchanged unless the file is actually located there.

For a 64-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows, the normal tool is:

"%windir%System32regsvr32.exe" "C:pathtomsosvabw.dll"

Do not blindly run regsvr32 /u. The /u switch unregisters the control and can make the installation less functional.

A successful registration message proves only that registration completed. It does not prove that the calling application can load the control or that its dependencies are present. If registration reports that the entry point is missing or the module cannot be loaded, stop and repair the original installation instead of trying random copies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Check Windows Features only for a separately identified dependency

Do not enable Windows Features as a generic fix for msosvabw.dll. This file is an Office ActiveX component, not a Windows optional feature.

If the error investigation identifies a separate legacy dependency, you can review available features:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs.
  3. Select Turn Windows features on or off.
  4. Review the feature named by the application’s official requirements.
  5. Enable only the documented feature.
  6. Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.

Do not randomly enable .NET, legacy components, or compatibility features. Enabling an unrelated feature will not recreate an Office-owned DLL.

Fix 9: Update Windows and investigate broader driver problems

Windows Update is worthwhile when several applications are failing, Windows reports component corruption, or the issue began after an incomplete update.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Test the original application.

Device Manager is relevant only if other symptoms point to a hardware or driver problem, such as repeated device errors, display failures, or storage errors.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category containing the affected device.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart if requested.

Do not expect a display, chipset, or audio driver update to replace msosvabw.dll. Driver work is a separate troubleshooting path.

When checking many devices manually becomes impractical, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers are stale; its full driver installation is optional, and it does not replace repairing the Office installation that owns this file.

Fix 10: Try System Restore after a clear system change

System Restore can help when the problem began immediately after an Office installation, update, driver change, or removal and an appropriate restore point exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system settings, installed programs, and registry state. It does not reliably replace a missing Office installation, so run Office Repair or reinstall the original product if the file is still missing.

Do not download or copy msosvabw.dll

A standalone DLL download is not an authoritative fix for this problem. Random download pages may provide:

  • A wrong version
  • A wrong architecture
  • A modified or malicious file
  • A file with missing dependencies
  • A DLL that does not match the Office installation’s registration

Copying the file to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is also usually wrong. Those directories are for Windows system components, and placing an Office control there can create path, registration, and version conflicts. Copying the same file into both folders does not solve 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility.

The safe sources are the original Microsoft Office installation, genuine Microsoft installation media, an authorized Microsoft account, or an organization-managed deployment. Microsoft does not provide a current standalone download specifically for msosvabw.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the error remains

At this point, identify the requesting executable rather than continuing to replace files.

Check:

  1. The executable named in the error dialog.
  2. Its installation directory.
  3. Whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  4. Whether it belongs to Office, Outlook, SharePoint integration, or another legacy application.
  5. Whether the failure affects every Windows user or only one profile.
  6. Whether a new Office or Windows profile shows the same behavior.

If only one user is affected, test a new Windows or Office profile before changing system files. If only one obsolete application fails, reinstall or replace that application. If several Office applications fail after a bitness change, remove the incompatible architecture and install the version required by the legacy control.

FAQ

Is msosvabw.dll a Windows system file?

No. It is an Office-supplied Address Book Wrapper control. It should normally come from the relevant Microsoft Office installation, not from Windows system folders.

Does “Office 10” mean Office 2010?

Usually not. In old product descriptions, Office 10 generally refers to the version 10 product family, commonly Office XP. Office 2010 used internal major version 14. Identify the actual installed product before repairing or reinstalling it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is this file 32-bit or 64-bit?

Historical records describe the control as 32-bit, but the installed file and calling application should be verified. A 32-bit ActiveX control is not compatible with 64-bit Office processes.

Should I register the DLL?

Only when the file exists, Office repair has already been attempted, and the remaining error specifically indicates an ActiveX or COM registration problem. Registration cannot restore a missing file or fix a missing dependency.

Will SFC restore msosvabw.dll?

Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while msosvabw.dll belongs to Office. Use SFC and DISM as secondary Windows checks, then repair or reinstall Office.

Why does the message say the module is missing when the file exists?

A required dependency may be missing, or the file may be the wrong architecture or version. Repair the original Office installation and identify the requesting program instead of copying another DLL over it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I copy the file into System32?

No. That is not a reliable repair and can create conflicts. Restore the component through the Office installer that supplied it.

What if antivirus removed it?

Review Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Restore it only after confirming the file came from a trusted Office installation and the detection is a verified false positive. Otherwise, reinstall Office from a genuine source.
