mss64.dll is a 64-bit Miles Sound System runtime used by some games and game tools. When mss64.dll is missing or cannot load, repair the game that owns it rather than downloading a replacement or copying one into a Windows system folder.
The file comes from RAD Game Tools, now part of Epic Games Tools, and provides audio functions such as playback, streaming, mixing, decoding, and spatial audio. It is application software, not a Windows component. Its normal location is beside the game executable or in one of that game’s runtime, bin, or win64 folders.

What the mss64.dll error means
You may see wording such as:
- “The code execution cannot proceed because mss64.dll was not found.”
- “mss64.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting mss64.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “mss64.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Error status 0xc000007b.”
The wording depends on Windows, the game executable, and the launcher. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that mss64.dll itself is missing or that another dependency required by it is unavailable.
The error does not mean that the file belongs to Windows. Do not place it in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Fix 1: Identify the game and its installation folder
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
Before repairing anything, find out which program is requesting the file. The filename alone does not identify the game because different products can ship different Miles Sound System builds.
- Read the complete error window and note the executable named in its title or message.
- If the error appears after clicking a desktop shortcut, right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
- Select Open File Location if that button is available.
- Look in the opened folder for the game’s executable and folders named
bin,win64,runtime, or similar. - Search the game’s installation directory for
mss64.dll.
You can also search from File Explorer:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Select This PC.
- In the search box, type
mss64.dll. - Wait for the search to finish.
- Right-click a result and select Open file location.
A legitimate copy will normally be in the folder belonging to the game or tool that uses it. A copy in a temporary download folder, an unfamiliar application directory, or a Windows system folder deserves additional scrutiny.
If the game was installed through a launcher, open that launcher and find the game’s entry. Record the game name, launcher, installation path, and the full error text before continuing.

Time needed: 5 to 30 minutes, plus any download time
This is the most likely solution. Verification restores a missing or damaged file from the game’s own approved installation source and preserves the correct build for that game.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Start the game from Steam.
If Steam reports that files were replaced, test the game before adding mods or custom launch options. If the error returns immediately, check Windows Security as described in the next section.
Epic Games Store
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the affected game.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the game.
- Select Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for verification to complete.
- Launch the game again.
Ubisoft Connect
- Open Ubisoft Connect.
- Select Games.
- Select the affected game.
- Open the game’s properties or three-dot menu.
- Choose Verify files or Verify files under the local-files section.
- Allow the launcher to repair the installation.
- Start the game again.
Launcher labels can change. Look for commands named Verify, Repair, Scan, or Check files. If the game has no repair command, uninstall it and reinstall it from the original store or publisher-provided installer.
Do not copy mss64.dll from another game. Even when two games use Miles Sound System, their runtime builds may not be interchangeable.
If the game was installed from an offline installer
Run the original installer again and choose Repair if that option is offered. Otherwise, reinstall the game to the same location. If you have a verified backup from the same game release, you may restore the file to the game’s own folder, but repairing through the original installer is safer.
Test result: the game should start without the mss64.dll message. If a new error names a different DLL, treat that as a separate dependency problem rather than repeatedly replacing mss64.dll.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Antivirus software may quarantine a game DLL after an update, mod installation, or change in detection rules. Quarantine alone does not prove that mss64.dll was malware. The file’s origin and the detection details matter.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any entry that refers to the affected game folder or
mss64.dll.
Only restore the file if all of these are true:
- It came from the legitimate game installation.
- The game was obtained from its official store or publisher.
- The detection details do not indicate a confirmed malicious file.
- You are prepared to verify the game immediately afterward.
Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely detected file can expose the computer. If the detection identifies malware, leave the file quarantined, run a full scan, and reinstall the game from its official source.

After restoring a trusted file:
- Return to the game’s launcher.
- Run file verification.
- Start the game.
- If Windows Security quarantines the file again, do not keep restoring it. Check the detection name and scan the complete installation.
Fix 4: Remove a mod or reverse a manual cleanup
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
A mod, unofficial patch, failed update, or disk-cleanup action may remove or replace the game’s original runtime.
- Temporarily remove recently installed mods using the mod manager’s uninstall function.
- Undo any manual deletion or cleanup that occurred before the error.
- Remove custom DLL files added by a mod only if the mod’s documentation identifies them.
- Run the launcher’s verification process again.
- Start the unmodified game.
If the game works without the mod, reinstall the mod only after confirming that it supports the current game version. Do not overwrite the game’s original mss64.dll with a file supplied for another release.
Fix 5: Install a separately named dependency
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
mss64.dll is not installed by Microsoft Visual C++ or DirectX. Those packages are relevant only when the error names one of their files or the game’s installer includes them as required prerequisites.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Look carefully at the complete error. Examples include a Visual C++ runtime DLL, a DirectX component, or a message containing 0xc000007b.
Visual C++ Redistributable
Use the Visual C++ Redistributable package recommended by the game publisher. Microsoft provides separate packages for x86, x64, and ARM64 systems.
A 64-bit Windows installation can run both 64-bit and 32-bit applications. Therefore, do not choose a package solely because Windows itself is 64-bit. Install the architecture required by the game. A 32-bit game may need the x86 package even on 64-bit Windows.
After installation:
- Restart Windows.
- Run the game’s file verification again.
- Launch the game.
Do not expect Visual C++ to recreate mss64.dll.
Legacy DirectX components
Some older games require legacy DirectX side-by-side components, including older D3DX, XAudio, XInput, or XACT files. Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer can install those legacy components.
Recommended Free Tools
- Download the installer from Microsoft’s Download Center.
- Run
dxwebsetup.exe. - Follow the setup prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the game again.
This package does not install Miles Sound System. If mss64.dll remains missing, return to the game’s repair or reinstall process.
Windows Features
Windows optional features are rarely the cause of an mss64.dll error, but an older game may require a legacy Windows component.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the available features.
- Enable only a feature specifically required by the game’s documentation.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable random features as a substitute for repairing the game.
Fix 6: Confirm the architecture and file location
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
The 64 in mss64.dll indicates a 64-bit Miles runtime. A 64-bit executable needs a compatible 64-bit build. Replacing it with mss32.dll, an x86 file, or a copy from another game can produce a bad-image error or 0xc000007b.
Check the game’s own installation structure:
- Open the game folder.
- Find the executable that the launcher starts.
- Look nearby for
mss64.dll. - Check
bin,win64, or runtime subfolders. - Use the launcher to restore the file rather than moving it manually.
Do not assume that every game using Miles has the same version, size, or build. The correct file is the one supplied with that particular game release.

Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for this error
Time needed: 2 minutes
regsvr32 registers certain COM or ActiveX DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command.
A game audio runtime such as mss64.dll is normally loaded by the game’s executable from its application directory. It does not normally need registration in Windows.
Do not run commands such as:
regsvr32 mss64.dll
They will not restore a missing file and may produce another error. Use the game’s verification or reinstall process instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 8: Repair Windows components only when symptoms point to Windows
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
If only one game reports the problem, Windows system repair is lower priority. If several applications fail, Windows features are damaged, or system files are reporting errors, repair the Windows image.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the game again.
DISM repairs the Windows image, while System File Checker repairs protected Windows system files. Neither command normally restores an application-owned mss64.dll, so repeat the game’s file verification if the game still reports the error.
If you are tired of repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component is damaged, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows issues and show what needs attention; repairs are performed by the full version. Reinstalling the affected game remains the definitive fix when its own runtime is missing.
Install pending Windows updates afterward:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Test the game.
Fix 9: Update or reinstall drivers only when the symptoms support it
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
A graphics or audio driver is not the usual cause of a missing mss64.dll, but driver problems can cause crashes, distorted audio, or a game that stops during startup.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use Device Manager when Windows reports a device problem:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Expand Display adapters if the failure also involves graphics.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
If an update caused the failure:
- Open the device’s Properties.
- Select the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if available.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the game.
For a clean reinstall, obtain the driver from the computer, motherboard, graphics, or sound-device manufacturer. Do not remove an unknown device unless you have the correct replacement driver ready.
Manually checking several hardware pages and matching driver versions can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the required updates; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not a substitute for repairing the game files.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 10: Use System Restore as a late-stage recovery
Time needed: 20 to 60 minutes
System Restore can reverse a recent driver, installer, or update change when a suitable restore point exists. It is not the first choice for one missing game DLL.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
Afterward, run the game’s file verification again. System Restore does not replace a missing game installation permanently, and it may not affect files outside the restore process.
Why mss64.dll goes missing
The common causes are:
| Cause | Appropriate response |
|---|---|
| Corrupted or incomplete game files | Verify or reinstall the game |
| Antivirus quarantine | Review Protection history, then verify the installation |
| Mod or unofficial patch | Remove the modification and restore original files |
| Failed game update | Run the launcher’s repair function |
| Wrong architecture or incompatible build | Restore the game’s own 64-bit runtime |
| Missing separate dependency | Install the publisher-recommended Visual C++ or DirectX package |
| Damaged Windows components | Run DISM and SFC when broader symptoms exist |
| Damaged or suspicious installer | Remove it and reinstall from the official source |
Do not treat a third-party version listing as a universal answer. Games can ship different Miles builds, and the filename alone does not establish compatibility.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download mss64.dll from a random DLL website. A downloaded file may contain malware, target the wrong architecture, belong to a different game, or be incompatible with the executable. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can also create version and security problems.

The safe sources are:
- The game’s launcher repair or verification feature.
- The original game installer.
- A verified backup from the same game release.
- Microsoft packages only when the error separately identifies a Microsoft dependency.
- The game’s official publisher or store support channel.
If a manual restore is unavoidable, place the exact original file in the affected game’s own folder, not a Windows system directory.
If verification says everything is valid
A successful verification does not always end the diagnosis.
Check these possibilities:
- The shortcut points to an old executable rather than the current launcher entry.
- A mod starts a separate executable from another folder.
- The error names a dependent DLL rather than
mss64.dllitself. - Windows Security removes the restored file immediately.
- The game has multiple installations and the launcher is starting the wrong one.
- The game’s executable and runtime files have mixed 32-bit and 64-bit builds.
- The installation source itself is damaged.
Copy the complete error text and note the exact path shown in any diagnostic window. Then reinstall the affected game from its original source if verification does not resolve the problem.
FAQ
Is mss64.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a third-party Miles Sound System runtime used by games and game tools. It should normally remain in the application’s installation directory.
Which game installed mss64.dll?
The filename does not identify one universal game. Find the file’s folder or read the executable named by the error. Different games can ship different Miles builds.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does 64-bit Windows require mss64.dll?
No. Windows does not require this file. A particular 64-bit game may require its own compatible mss64.dll.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Restore it to the game folder through the launcher or original installer. System32 and SysWOW64 are not appropriate destinations.
Will Visual C++ or DirectX install mss64.dll?
No. They may install separate dependencies named by another error, but they do not replace the Miles runtime.
Can regsvr32 fix mss64.dll?
Normally no. regsvr32 is for registering DLLs designed for COM or ActiveX registration, not for restoring game runtime files.
Recommended Free Tools
Is a quarantined mss64.dll malware?
Not necessarily. Review the detection, file origin, and scan results. Do not restore it automatically. If it came from a legitimate game, verify the installation after any trusted restoration.
What should I include when asking for support?
Include the game name, launcher, Windows version and architecture, complete error text, file path, recent update or mod activity, and any antivirus quarantine event. Mention whether verification, reinstalling prerequisites, and Windows repair commands changed the result.
