msstkprp.dll Won’t Load: Safe Repairs for Legacy Apps

msstkprp.dll is a genuine Microsoft 32-bit Visual Basic 6.0 ActiveX component, not a random Windows filename. When msstkprp.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, the safest fix is usually to repair or reinstall the older application that needs it.

The file’s internal/component description is msprop32.ocx, and it belongs to the msprop32 component. Microsoft lists it among the VB6 runtime-extended files that applications may redistribute. It is not one of the core VB6 runtime files built into Windows.

Before changing anything, identify the application

The filename alone does not identify one universal program. Several unrelated legacy applications can depend on the same VB6 control.

Write down:

1. The exact program, game, Office add-in, or VBA project that fails.
2. The complete error message.
3. Whether the error appeared after uninstalling, updating, cleaning, restoring, or quarantining software.
4. The path shown for any copy of msstkprp.dll.
5. Whether you use 32-bit or 64-bit Office.
6. Your Windows version.

4. Choose Repair, Modify, or an equivalent maintenance option.
5. Allow the installation to finish.
6. Restart Windows if the installer requests it.

If repair is unavailable, uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the original vendor package. Back up application data first, particularly for older business software that stores settings or databases inside its installation directory.

A successful repair normally removes the missing-file message and allows the original program to open. If the same message returns immediately, the installer may not include the extended VB6 control, or the component may be failing registration rather than missing entirely.

Fix 2: Install Microsoft’s VB6 SP6 runtime-extended update

Time needed: 10–20 minutes

If the original program does not supply the component, use Microsoft’s official package rather than a standalone DLL download.

Microsoft’s Download Center lists the Visual Basic 6.0 Service Pack 6 Cumulative Update and the installer VB60SP6-KB2708437-x86-ENU.msi. Its file list includes Msstkprp.cab and msstkprp.dll.

1. Open Microsoft’s Visual Basic 6.0 Service Pack 6 Cumulative Update page.
2. Confirm that the download is the Microsoft package named VB60SP6-KB2708437-x86-ENU.msi.
3. Download the installer.
4. Right-click the downloaded MSI and select Run as administrator.
5. Follow the setup prompts.
6. Restart Windows.
7. Launch the program that produced the error.

The package page lists legacy supported operating systems. Do not assume that an old installer will work identically on every Windows 10 or Windows 11 configuration. If setup refuses to install, the application’s own installer may be the only supported way to deploy the component.

This update can supply the file, but the affected program may still need its own installer to place and register the control correctly. If the file is present after installation but the error changes to Class not registered, use the registration procedure below.

Fix 3: Check whether the file exists but ActiveX registration is missing

Time needed: 5–10 minutes

Use this fix for messages such as:

• Class not registered
• Component cannot be created
• The file could not be loaded
• An Office or VBA project cannot insert or create the control

Do not use regsvr32 automatically for every missing-DLL message. Registration is relevant here because msstkprp.dll is associated with an ActiveX/COM control. It will not repair a corrupt file, wrong architecture, missing dependency, or incompatible host application.

Find the file

Use File Explorer to check the application’s installation folder first. You can also search the locations where the installer placed it.

Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect:

• Location
• Company or publisher information

A file sitting in C:WindowsSystem32 is not automatically genuine. Its provenance matters more than its location.

Register on 64-bit Windows

SysWOW64regsvr32.exe is the 32-bit registration tool on 64-bit Windows. That is the correct registration view for this 32-bit component.

Register on 32-bit Windows

Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:

Microsoft documents Regsvr32 use for OCX and DLL files and the separate 32-bit and 64-bit registry views.

A success message means the registration tool accepted the file. It does not prove that the application can use it. If Regsvr32 reports module could not be loaded, entry point not found, or an architecture error, stop retrying the same command. Verify the path, obtain the component again from the original installer or Microsoft package, and check the host architecture.

Fix 4: Check the Office architecture

Time needed: 5 minutes

A 32-bit ActiveX control cannot be loaded by 64-bit Office merely because the DLL exists on disk.

To check Office:

1. Open Word or Excel.
2. Select File.
3. Select Account.
4. Select About Word or About Excel.
5. Read the architecture shown in the dialog.

If the control is required by an old VBA project and you use 64-bit Office, the practical choices may be:

• Use the 32-bit edition of Office if the project depends on other 32-bit ActiveX controls.
• Ask the software vendor for a modern or 64-bit-compatible replacement.
• Remove or replace the obsolete control in the VBA project.

Do not install random copies of msstkprp.dll in an attempt to make a 32-bit control work inside a 64-bit Office process. The process architecture is the limitation.

Fix 5: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

Antivirus quarantine is a plausible reason for a component to disappear after it previously worked. It is not proof that Defender detected this particular file, so verify the event before restoring anything.

1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
2. Select Virus & threat protection.
3. Select Protection history.
4. Review recent detections.
5. Expand the event involving msstkprp.dll, if one exists.
6. Check the original path, detection name, and source.
7. Restore the file only if it came from the original application installer or Microsoft package and its provenance is credible.

Microsoft warns in its Protection History guidance that restoring a quarantined file can cause it to be detected again. Do not allow the file merely to silence the error if its source or signature is uncertain.

After restoring a trusted file, run a full Defender scan and test the application. If Defender immediately quarantines it again, leave it quarantined and reinstall the application from a verified source instead.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Time needed: 15–30 minutes

SFC and DISM repair Windows system components. They are not the most likely solution for msstkprp.dll because Microsoft classifies this file as an application-distributed VB6 extended-runtime component rather than a core Windows-shipped file.

Use them when other Windows features are also failing, system files are visibly damaged, or the problem began after broader Windows corruption.

1. Open Start.
2. Type Command Prompt.
3. Right-click it.
4. Select Run as administrator.
5. Run this command and wait for it to finish:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

1. Then run:

sfc /scannow

1. Restart Windows.
2. Test the affected application.

Run DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, restart and test again. If both tools complete without changing the error, return to the application repair or VB6 package steps rather than repeatedly running the same commands.

System Restore is useful when the file worked before a recent uninstall, cleanup, failed update, or system change and a suitable restore point exists.

1. Press Windows + R.
2. Type:

rstrui.exe

1. Press Enter.
2. Select Next.
3. Choose a restore point created before the error began.
4. Select Scan for affected programs.
5. Review the programs and drivers that may be changed.
6. Select Next, then Finish.
7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can roll back applications, drivers, registry settings, and system components. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore instructions.

If there is no suitable restore point, do not create one after the failure and expect it to recover the old state. Use the original application installer instead.

Fix 8: Update a related driver only when the symptoms point there

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

A graphics, chipset, or input driver is not a normal cause of a missing VB6 ActiveX component. Driver work belongs later in the process, unless the application also crashes with display, hardware, or device errors.

To check for a related driver:

1. Right-click Start.
2. Select Device Manager.
3. Expand the category connected to the symptom, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Human Interface Devices.
4. Right-click the device.
5. Select Update driver.
6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

For a driver that broke immediately after an update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if the button is available.

Avoid using Device Manager as a substitute for repairing the application. A driver update will not normally restore msstkprp.dll.

Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, and .NET repairs are not evidence-based first choices for this particular filename. Install them only when the affected application separately reports a dependency on them.

Should you copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?

Usually, no.

Copying a DLL into a system directory can create version conflicts and does not necessarily register an ActiveX component. The application’s installer should place the file where that application expects it.

If a trusted installer explicitly places the component in a system directory, follow that installer. On 64-bit Windows, remember that this is a 32-bit file and that its registration must use the 32-bit registry view. Do not manually copy a downloaded DLL into System32 just because the error says the file is missing.

How to verify a recovered file

Before trusting a recovered copy:

1. Confirm that it came from the original application installer or Microsoft’s official VB6 package.
2. Check Properties > Digital Signatures, if available.
3. Confirm the path matches the application’s expected location.
4. Scan it with Microsoft Defender.
5. Compare its identity with the official Microsoft file information where applicable.
6. Do not mix builds from unrelated installations unless the application vendor instructs you to do so.
