“The program can’t start because mssvp.dll is missing from your computer,” “mssvp.dll was not found,” and “Error loading mssvp.dll” are common versions of the same failure. mssvp.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows Search component, so repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The 60-second answer
mssvp.dll means MSSearch Vista Platform, a component of Microsoft Windows Search. It supports the indexing and search stack used by Windows and by software that integrates with Windows Search, including Explorer, Outlook, and some older applications.

Do this in order:
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Open an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Run DISM, then SFC:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
- Restart again and test the affected application.
- If only one legacy application fails, repair or reinstall that application from its official installer.
- Do not copy
mssvp.dllfrom a random DLL website intoSystem32.
Microsoft documents this repair sequence in its System File Checker guidance.

Windows Search is built into Windows Vista and later. Older Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 systems used the separately distributed Windows Search 4.0 package, identified by Microsoft as KB940157. That legacy package is not a general-purpose DLL download for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
A normal copy is a protected Windows file, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX library, game middleware component, or ordinary third-party application dependency.
Where should the file be?
On 64-bit Windows, the native 64-bit copy normally belongs here:

The 32-bit copy used by 32-bit applications is normally handled through:
C:WindowsSysWOW64mssvp.dll
The names are confusing: System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files. Windows uses WOW64 redirection so that applications receive the architecture they require. Microsoft explains this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.
A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and copying a 32-bit file into System32 is not an architecture fix. Restore the copy supplied by the installed Windows build instead.
What the error usually means
| Message | Likely meaning |
|---|---|
mssvp.dll is missing or was not found |
The file is absent, inaccessible, quarantined, or the application is looking in the wrong location. |
Error loading mssvp.dll |
Windows found the file but could not load it or one of its dependencies. |
mssvp.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error |
The file may be corrupted, mismatched, or the wrong architecture. |
The code execution cannot proceed |
The application cannot start because its Windows Search dependency failed. |
The exact wording varies by Windows version and the program reporting the error. The message does not prove that the application itself installed the file.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates first
A failed or interrupted servicing operation can leave Windows components inconsistent.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no further update is offered.
- Test the application or search feature again.
If the error began immediately after an update, restart before trying more invasive repairs. A pending restart can prevent component repair from completing.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the main repair for a missing or corrupted mssvp.dll.
Open an elevated terminal
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. It may appear to pause at a percentage for some time. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete.
Read the result
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no damaged protected files.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once.
- DISM reports that the source files could not be found: use matching Windows installation media as a repair source rather than downloading an individual DLL.
A matching source must use the same Windows edition, language, architecture, and servicing level. The documented pattern is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the source path with the actual mounted repair source.

Repeating SFC/DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the condition behind the failure, while its full version performs the repair; it is optional, and Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the supported manual path.
Fix 3: Check whether security software quarantined it
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine a damaged file, and malware cleanup can also change Windows components. This is a possible cause, not proof that mssvp.dll is malware.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for a recent entry involving
mssvp.dllor Windows Search. - Confirm that the path is a Windows directory and that the detected item is genuinely a Microsoft file before considering restoration.
- Run Scan options and select Full scan.
Do not restore a file merely because its name is correct. A Microsoft signature supports its identity, but it does not prove that every copy named mssvp.dll is safe or matches your Windows build.
If the file exists outside the Windows directory, such as in a temporary folder, user profile, download folder, or unrelated application directory, scan it and verify its digital signature before opening the associated program.
Fix 4: Determine whether one application is responsible
If Windows Search, Explorer, and Outlook work normally but one old program reports the error, the application may be calling Windows Search incorrectly or carrying a damaged integration.
- Open File Explorer and browse to the application’s installation folder.
- Do not copy
mssvp.dllinto that folder. - Open the application’s official settings or installer.
- Choose Repair, Modify, or Check for updates if available.
- If repair is unavailable, uninstall the application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the latest compatible version from the developer’s official installer.
If the application is very old, check its compatibility settings:

- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only for testing.
- Apply the change and test.
If the program still fails while Windows Search works elsewhere, the application remains the most likely repair target.
Fix 5: Check the Windows Search service
A stopped service can cause search failures, although restarting it will not replace a missing DLL.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Windows Search.
- Double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic (Delayed Start) if it is disabled.
- Select Start or Restart.
- Select Apply, then OK.
If the service refuses to start and reports a missing or invalid module, return to DISM and SFC. Do not replace the DLL manually.
Fix 6: Rebuild the search index only for search-result problems
Rebuilding the index can help when files or Outlook messages do not appear in results. It does not repair a missing, corrupted, or unloadable mssvp.dll.
Recommended Free Tools
For Windows Search or Outlook search issues:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Indexing Options.
- Select Advanced.
- Select Rebuild.
- Confirm the prompt.
- Leave the computer powered on while indexing completes.
Microsoft also documents this process in its guide to rebuilding the Instant Search catalog.
Fix 7: Consider drivers only when the application has a related device
mssvp.dll is not a normal device-driver file. Do not update every driver simply because this DLL is missing. Driver work is relevant only when the failing software also controls a scanner, printer, capture device, or another peripheral and its own driver package is damaged.
To inspect the device:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties and inspect the Device status message.
- Under Driver, select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Guessing which of many drivers is stale is slower than checking the affected device directly. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers need attention, while its full version installs them; it is optional and does not replace repairing Windows Search or reinstalling the affected application.

Usually, no. regsvr32 cannot restore a deleted or corrupted file, and it is not a general missing-DLL fix.
Known copies of mssvp.dll expose registration functions, so registration may be relevant only after Windows has restored the correct file and the search subsystem specifically reports a registration problem. Use the executable matching the DLL architecture.

You can inspect it by opening Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off, but do not randomly disable or enable features to fix this error. The correct repair path is Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and, when necessary, a Windows repair reinstall.
On supported Windows 11 installations, use:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Back up important data first.
If nothing repairs the file
Check the SFC details:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
If SFC repeatedly reports corruption, investigate disk or filesystem damage and consider:
- System Restore to a point before the failure
- An in-place Windows repair
- Windows recovery or reinstallation
Back up personal files before recovery work. If only one application remains affected, reinstall that application rather than replacing a Windows system file.

Is mssvp.dll malware?
No. mssvp.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows Search component. A copy with the correct Microsoft signature in the Windows directory is expected. A file with the same name elsewhere must be verified and scanned.
Can I download mssvp.dll?
Do not use random DLL download sites. They can provide malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not fix the underlying component corruption. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching installation media, or the official installer for the affected application.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
There is no evidence that mssvp.dll belongs to Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET redistributables. Repair Windows Search first.
Should I copy the file into System32?
No. The correct location depends on Windows architecture and the file’s build. Copying a 32-bit DLL into System32 on 64-bit Windows can create another mismatch.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why does Outlook report the error?
Outlook can use Windows Search for indexed results. A Windows Search failure can therefore appear as an Outlook search or startup problem. Repair the Windows component before rebuilding the Outlook index.
What is the safest final check?
Confirm that Windows Search starts, Explorer search works, and the affected application launches normally after a restart. If only one application still fails, repair or reinstall that application from its official source.
