ssc.dll is not a Windows system file. It is usually the SSC, or SAM Simulation Core, library installed with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) System Advisor Model (SAM), its SDK, or an application generated from SAM.
The safest fix is to identify the program reporting the error, then repair or reinstall that program with its matching ssc.dll. Do not copy a random DLL into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or another unrelated application folder.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall SAM
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
If SAM itself will not start, reinstalling SAM from NREL is the most likely solution.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for SAM.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and try launching SAM again.
If there is no repair option, or repair does not restore the file:

- In Installed apps, select SAM.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download SAM again from the official NREL SAM download page.
- Run the official installer as an administrator.
- Start SAM from its new Start menu or desktop shortcut.
The current Windows SAM distribution is 64-bit. Older SDK packages may contain separate win32 and win64 folders, so the correct package depends on the application using the library.
A normal installation may place the file under a path similar to:
C:SAM<SAM-version>x64ssc.dll
The exact folder can differ between SAM releases and generated applications.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What success looks like: SAM opens without a missing-DLL message, or the generated application can locate the SSC library.
If it fails: Continue with the checks below instead of downloading a replacement ssc.dll. The file may exist but fail because of an incompatible version, architecture, search path, or missing dependency.
Fix 2: Find the copy being used
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
The error may come from SAM, SDKtool, PySAM or Python code, Excel VBA, Java, C#, or a custom program generated by SAM. The application name matters because each caller may expect ssc.dll in a different directory.
First, check whether the file exists:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the SAM installation folder.
- Search for
ssc.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the Location, Created, and Modified information.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
A documented SAM or SDK location is more trustworthy than a copy found in a temporary folder, a browser download folder, or a random system directory.
If the calling program is a generated application, inspect its installation directory as well. Generated code may expect ssc.dll beside the executable or in a directory configured by the SDK.
Do not assume that a file with the right name is the right file. Multiple SAM versions can be installed side by side, and a custom application may have been generated against a different SSC release.
What success looks like: The application and its expected ssc.dll are located together, or you identify that the application is pointing at an old or missing directory.
If it fails: Note the full path shown in the error or application configuration. That path is more useful than the filename alone.

Time needed: 5–15 minutes
A 32-bit application cannot normally load a 64-bit ssc.dll, and a 64-bit application cannot use a 32-bit copy. This is particularly common with Excel VBA and older SDK integrations.
NREL SDK packages identify platform folders such as:
win32ssc.dll
win64ssc.dll
Use the copy that matches the host program:
| Calling program | Required library |
|---|---|
| 32-bit application | 32-bit ssc.dll |
| 64-bit application | 64-bit ssc.dll |
To check the Microsoft Office architecture:
- Open Excel.
- Select File.
- Select Account.
- Select About Excel.
- Read whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
To check a normal executable:
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details.
- Find the running program.
- On some Windows versions, 32-bit programs are marked with a suffix such as
*32.
For Python, Java, C#, VBA, or custom code, use the ssc.dll shipped with the same SAM or SDK version that generated the code. If possible, regenerate the wrapper or source code from that installation rather than changing only the DLL.
What success looks like: The calling program opens and can access SSC modules without an architecture or entry-point error.
If it fails: The file may be the wrong SSC release, or Windows may be reporting a missing dependency rather than a missing ssc.dll.
Fix 4: Restore the matching SDK or generated application files
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Reinstalling SAM is not always enough when the error comes from code generated by SAM.
For a Python or PySAM project:
- Identify which SAM installation generated the code.
- Check the project configuration for a hard-coded SSC path.
- Confirm that the path points to that installation’s library.
- Regenerate the Python wrapper from SAM if possible.
- Test the project from its intended working directory.
For VBA, Java, C#, or C++:
- Open the project or macro configuration.
- Find the directory supplied to the SSC loader.
- Replace an obsolete path with the matching SDK directory.
- Keep the expected
ssc.dllbeside the application or in the path specified by the SDK. - Rebuild or restart the host application.
A custom SSC build may use a different filename, including a debug build named sscd.dll. Do not replace a custom build with a release DLL simply because both relate to SSC.
What success looks like: The wrapper starts, the module list loads, or the application reaches the point where it uses SAM calculations.

Fix 5: Repair the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
Time needed: 10–15 minutes
ssc.dll can be present while Windows still reports:
The specified module could not be found.
That message can mean that a dependency required by ssc.dll is missing. It does not always mean that ssc.dll itself is absent.
Install or repair the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable that matches the calling application:

- Open Microsoft’s official Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable page.
- Download the appropriate official installer.
- Run

vc_redist.x86.exefor a 32-bit application. - On 64-bit Windows used with both 32-bit and 64-bit programs, installing both packages may be necessary.
- Choose Repair if the installer offers it.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Do not treat the Visual C++ runtime as a replacement for ssc.dll. It supplies supporting runtime components; SSC remains the application library.

What success looks like: The loader error disappears without changing the SSC file.
If it fails: The missing dependency may be specific to the SAM or custom build. Check the application’s full error details and Windows Event Viewer rather than installing unrelated runtime packages.
Fix 6: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
If ssc.dll disappeared after a security scan, Windows Security may have quarantined it.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for a recent detection involving the SAM installation directory.
- Expand the detection to inspect its path and action.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of these are true:
- It came from the official SAM or SDK installation.
- Its path is inside the expected application directory.
- You recognize the program that installed it.
- You have no reason to suspect that the installer or application was altered.
If the origin is unclear, do not restore it manually. Remove the questionable installation, scan Windows, and reinstall SAM from NREL.
What success looks like: The file returns to the expected directory and the application starts.
If it fails: The antivirus may have removed more than ssc.dll, or the original installation may be incomplete. Reinstall the application instead of restoring isolated files.

Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Drivers are not normally the direct owner of ssc.dll, but outdated system components or graphics drivers can prevent some applications from starting correctly.
To check Windows updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
To check a device driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of identifying which of many devices has an outdated driver; its free scan shows what it found, while driver installation is handled by the full version. SAM itself still needs the correct official installation if its own DLL is missing.
What success looks like: The application starts after Windows and device updates, without replacing ssc.dll.
If it fails: Return to the SAM or SDK installation. Driver updates are not a substitute for matching the SSC library to the calling application.
Fix 8: Repair Windows components only if other programs also fail
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Because ssc.dll is not a protected Windows system component, SFC and DISM will not normally restore it. Use these commands when multiple unrelated applications have DLL or system-component errors.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test SAM or the affected application.
Microsoft’s DISM repair and SFC documentation explains the possible results. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the application again. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, the problem is probably with SAM, the SDK, the DLL search path, or a dependency.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and show what its free scan found, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the SAM program remains the definitive fix when its own files are missing.
What success looks like: Other Windows component errors are resolved and the application starts.
If it fails: Do not expect SFC or DISM to recreate a third-party SSC library. Reinstall SAM or the application that supplied it.
Do not register ssc.dll with regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. SSC is a library loaded by an application, not normally an ActiveX control or COM server.
Running:
regsvr32 ssc.dll
will commonly produce an error stating that the entry point is missing. That does not repair the file. Do not register it, and do not move it into System32 or SysWOW64.
Why the error happens
The most likely causes are:
- SAM or the SDK was incompletely installed.
- An update or uninstall removed the file.
- Generated code points to an older SAM installation.
- A 32-bit host is loading a 64-bit library, or the reverse.
- A dependent Visual C++ runtime is missing.
- The application’s working directory or
PATHdoes not include the library. - Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- The copy came from an unrelated or suspicious program.
The filename alone does not prove that every ssc.dll belongs to NREL. Verify the complete path and the application that loads it.

Frequently asked questions
Is ssc.dll a Windows file?
No. The documented primary use is the SSC library shipped with NREL’s System Advisor Model and SDK. It should not normally be placed in a Windows system folder.
Where should ssc.dll be located?
Usually inside the SAM installation, SDK package, or generated application directory. The expected location depends on the SAM release and the calling program.
Can I download just ssc.dll?
Do not use random DLL download sites. A standalone file can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to another SSC release, or still fail because a dependency is missing. Reinstall SAM or the application from its official developer source.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?
Windows may be unable to find a dependency required by ssc.dll. Check the Visual C++ Redistributable, architecture, application path, and full error details.
