msvcp_win.dll Missing: Repair Windows and the App in Order

If msvcp_win.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement DLL. On Windows 10 and 11, this file is normally part of the protected Universal C Runtime and is serviced through Windows Update.

What this file actually does

msvcp_win.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL associated with the Universal C Runtime, or UCRT. Applications built with Microsoft development tools may call it for standard C and C++ runtime functions.

It is not normally a file supplied by the game or application itself, and it is not the same file as msvcp140.dll, vcruntime140.dll, or ucrtbase.dll. Those files belong to related runtime components and may be installed separately.

On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:

  • C:WindowsSystem32msvcp_win.dll for 64-bit programs
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64msvcp_win.dll for 32-bit programs

The names can be confusing: System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit compatibility files.

File versions and sizes vary with the Windows release, architecture, cumulative updates, and servicing branch. Do not use a file version or size from another computer as proof that your copy is correct.

Microsoft documents the UCRT as a Windows component on Windows 10 and later. Older systems, including Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1, may need the official Universal C Runtime update for newer applications.

Causes by symptom

Symptom Most likely cause Best first repair
Several programs fail with the same error Damaged, deleted, or incompletely serviced Windows files Windows Update, DISM, then SFC
Only one game or application fails Damaged application files or a missing companion runtime Repair or reinstall the application
The file disappeared after a security scan Antivirus quarantine or a false positive Check Protection History
The message says the file is “not designed to run on Windows” Wrong architecture, corruption, or an invalid replacement Remove the loose replacement and repair Windows
The problem began after an interrupted game update Corrupt game files Verify the game’s files in its launcher
The program requires msvcp140.dll or vcruntime140.dll Visual C++ Redistributable is missing or damaged Install the required Microsoft runtime architecture
Repairs work temporarily, then the file disappears again Disk, malware, profile, or deeper Windows corruption Scan, check disk health, use System Restore, or repair Windows

The exact wording differs by Windows version and by the program launching the file. You may see “msvcp_win.dll was not found,” “The code execution cannot proceed,” “Error loading msvcp_win.dll,” or “The program can’t start because msvcp_win.dll is missing.”

A message saying the DLL is not designed to run on Windows usually indicates a mismatched or corrupt binary. It does not simply mean that the file is absent.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

This is the safest first step on Windows 10 and Windows 11 because the UCRT is maintained as part of Windows servicing.

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. On Windows 11, select Check for updates. On Windows 10, select Check for updates in the Windows Update panel.
  4. Install every applicable update.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on a restart.
  6. Try the affected application again.

If the error returns, continue with DISM and System File Checker. An update may repair the component without repairing all existing corruption.

Fix 2: Run DISM, then System File Checker

Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which gives SFC a usable source for replacing damaged protected files.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. It can appear to pause for a while.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows and test the program.

A successful DISM operation normally ends with a message stating that the restore operation completed successfully. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or found files it could not repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If SFC repairs files, restart and test the application. If it says that some files could not be repaired, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. Do not keep repeating the same commands indefinitely without investigating the underlying problem.

Running these repairs manually means waiting through long scans and determining what changed from their text output. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan detects, while repair actions are performed by the full version; it is optional, and Windows Update plus DISM and SFC remain the appropriate built-in path.

If DISM cannot obtain repair files from Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace the example path with a real Windows repair source matching your installed edition and build closely. Do not use a random ISO or an unrelated Windows version.

Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected program

If Windows contains the file correctly but one application still fails, the application installation or one of its dependencies may be damaged.

First check whether Windows offers a repair action:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find the affected program.
  5. Select its three-dot menu, or select the program and choose Advanced options.
  6. Select Repair if available.
  7. Launch the program again.

For a traditional desktop application:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs and then Programs and Features.
  3. Select the application.
  4. Choose Repair or Change if the installer provides that option.
  5. Follow the installer prompts and restart if requested.

If repair is unavailable or does not help, uninstall the application and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer or launcher. Do not preserve a suspicious DLL copied into the application folder. A clean installation is more reliable than replacing one file by hand.

If only a single game fails, use the launcher’s file verification function. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, select Properties, choose Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. The launcher will replace missing or damaged game files without requiring you to download a loose system DLL.

Fix 4: Install the correct Visual C++ Redistributable

The Visual C++ Redistributable is relevant when the error names files such as:

  • msvcp140.dll
  • vcruntime140.dll
  • vcruntime140_1.dll

It is not a guaranteed repair for msvcp_win.dll, which is primarily a Windows/UCRT component. However, applications can depend on several runtime files at once, and the visible error may not reveal the entire dependency chain.

Download the current supported package from Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable page, or use the runtime installer supplied by the application’s official installer.

Pay attention to architecture:

  • A 32-bit application needs the x86 Redistributable, even on 64-bit Windows.
  • A 64-bit application needs the x64 Redistributable.
  • Some computers need both because they run both 32-bit and 64-bit programs.

To identify an application’s architecture, check its documentation or installer. If you are unsure and use both types of software, installing the official x86 and x64 packages is commonly necessary. Do not remove older Redistributable generations merely because a newer package is installed; multiple generations can coexist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After installation, restart Windows and test the program. If the error still specifically names msvcp_win.dll, return to Windows Update and DISM/SFC rather than repeatedly reinstalling Visual C++.

Fix 5: Install the official UCRT update on older Windows

Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 may require Microsoft’s Universal C Runtime update when running software built with Visual Studio 2015 or later.

  1. Open Microsoft’s official Universal C Runtime update page.
  2. Confirm that your Windows edition and architecture are supported.
  3. Install the required prerequisites listed by Microsoft.
  4. Download the matching x86 or x64 package.
  5. Run the MSU installer.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Test the application again.

Microsoft’s legacy download includes architecture-specific packages. Use the package matching both the operating system and the application requirements. If the update refuses to install, do not force it with a package for another Windows release. Install the applicable servicing updates first or move to a supported Windows repair path.

Fix 6: Check antivirus quarantine

If the file vanished immediately after an antivirus scan, inspect the security product’s quarantine rather than downloading a replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Windows Security:

  1. Open Start and type Windows Security.
  2. Open the app.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review recent detections.
  6. Expand a detection to inspect its path and details.

Restore or allow a file only when its path is the expected Windows system location and its Microsoft digital signature and system integrity are trustworthy. Do not blindly whitelist a file downloaded from the internet.

After restoring a legitimate quarantined file, run DISM and SFC, restart, and test the application. If antivirus repeatedly removes the same file, update the security product, run a full scan, and investigate whether the file is genuinely corrupted or whether another program is modifying protected system files.

Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for this DLL

regsvr32 is for DLLs or ActiveX controls that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose DLL repair command.

Running:

regsvr32 msvcp_win.dll

normally produces an error stating that the module was loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That result does not prove the file is missing, and running the command again will not repair it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Windows servicing, DISM, SFC, or the application installer instead.

Fix 8: Avoid manual DLL downloads and copying

Do not download msvcp_win.dll from a random DLL website or copy a version from another computer into System32, SysWOW64, or a game folder.

A loose DLL may have the wrong architecture, build, language resources, export set, or digital signature. It can also conceal malware and leave the underlying component-store or application problem untouched. Copying the wrong file often changes a “missing” message into “not designed to run on Windows.”

The safe sources are Windows Update, Microsoft’s official UCRT documentation and packages for supported older systems, Windows installation media used as a matching DISM repair source, and the affected application’s official installer for application files.

If the error keeps returning

Recurring failures point beyond a one-time missing file.

Try these steps in order:

  1. Run a full malware scan.
  2. Check available disk space and disk health.
  3. Look in Event Viewer by pressing Windows + X, selecting Event Viewer, and reviewing Windows Logs > Application around the failure time.
  4. Test the program from a new Windows user account.
  5. Use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
  6. On current Windows 11, use Fix problems using Windows Update to reinstall the same Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.
  7. Perform a Windows repair installation or reset only after backing up important files.

Driver reinstall is not a primary fix for a missing msvcp_win.dll. Consider drivers only if the application’s crash log also identifies a graphics or hardware driver.

When driver evidence exists, open Device Manager by right-clicking Start, expand the relevant category, right-click the device, select Update driver, and choose an appropriate official driver source. Manually checking many hardware models and deciding which package is stale can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan detects, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and cannot replace Windows repair when the system component itself is damaged.

What to give technical support

If you still need help, provide:

  • Windows edition, version, and build
  • The application or game name
  • The exact error text or a screenshot
  • Whether the failure affects one program or several
  • Whether the file exists in System32 or SysWOW64
  • Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Recent Windows, application, antivirus, or driver changes
  • DISM and SFC results
  • Relevant Event Viewer entries

FAQ

Is msvcp_win.dll safe?

A genuine copy in the expected Windows system directory, signed by Microsoft, is a legitimate Windows component. Location, signature, architecture, and system integrity matter more than the filename alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it part of Visual C++ Redistributable?

It is associated with the Universal C Runtime, but on Windows 10 and 11 it is primarily serviced as part of Windows. It should not be confused with msvcp140.dll, which is supplied by the Visual C++ Redistributable.

Should I copy it into the game folder?

No. Repair the Windows component or verify the game files instead. A copied DLL can be incompatible and can create a different loader error.

Why does only one application fail?

That application may have a damaged installation, use a missing companion runtime, or have corrupted files after an update. If other programs work, repair the application after confirming Windows itself is healthy.

Do I need both x86 and x64 runtimes?

A 32-bit application needs x86, even on 64-bit Windows. Install x64 only for 64-bit applications. Some computers legitimately need both.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Windows Features repair this file?

Windows Features is not the normal repair location for the UCRT. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. Optional Windows components may matter to a particular application, but enabling random features will not replace a damaged msvcp_win.dll.

When should I use Device Manager?

Use it only when the application’s logs also point to a driver problem. A missing runtime DLL is normally a Windows servicing, application, or runtime issue, not a driver issue.
