msvcr110d.dll Missing: Diagnose the Debug Runtime Safely

By VGSources Team 18 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If msvcr110d.dll is missing, the affected program is requesting the debug version of Microsoft’s Visual C++ 2012 runtime. The final d in msvcr110d.dll matters because this is not the same file as msvcr110.dll, and the ordinary Visual C++ Redistributable normally does not provide it.

Before changing Windows, identify:

  • Which program displays the error.
  • Whether it happens when launching a game, SDK, hardware utility, engineering application, or developer build.
  • Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Whether the message names msvcr110.dll or msvcr110d.dll.
  • Whether the problem began after an update, reinstall, cleanup, antivirus alert, or disk problem.
  • Whether related files such as msvcp110d.dll or mfc110d.dll are also mentioned.

The correct repair depends primarily on whether you are running a normal released application or a Visual Studio debug build.

What msvcr110d.dll is

msvcr110d.dll is Microsoft’s Visual C++ 2012, also called VC 11.0, Debug C Runtime Library. Microsoft documents it under the Microsoft.VC110.DebugCRT component in the Debug_NonRedist\x86 and Debug_NonRedist\x64 folders used for testing Visual C++ debug applications. See Microsoft’s Visual C++ build-environment documentation.

The filename can be read as follows:

  • MS identifies Microsoft.
  • VCR refers to the Visual C Runtime.
  • 110 identifies Visual C++ 11.0, associated with Visual Studio 2012.
  • The final d means Debug.

This is a legitimate Microsoft runtime filename, but it is a development and testing component rather than a normal Windows system file.

Windows does not normally install msvcr110d.dll in System32 or SysWOW64. It should not be treated like a protected Windows component that can be restored through ordinary system-file repair.

The difference between msvcr110.dll and msvcr110d.dll

The two filenames are closely related but serve different builds.

File Purpose Normal source
msvcr110.dll Release Visual C++ 2012 C Runtime Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable
msvcr110d.dll Debug Visual C++ 2012 C Runtime Visual Studio 2012 debug files

The release file has no final d. A program linked against msvcr110.dll can normally use the matching Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable. A program linked against msvcr110d.dll is asking for the debug runtime instead.

Installing a release runtime does not convert it into the debug runtime. Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2012 redistribution documentation lists release runtime files such as msvcr110.dll, not msvcr110d.dll.

This is why installing a Visual C++ package can appear to complete successfully while the exact msvcr110d.dll error remains unchanged.

What the error messages mean

You may see wording such as:

The program can't start because MSVCR110D.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

Other common Windows loader messages include:

The code execution cannot proceed because msvcr110d.dll was not found.
Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.
There was a problem starting msvcr110d.dll.
The specified module could not be found.
msvcr110d.dll is either not designed to run on Windows
or it contains an error.
The application has failed to start because msvcr110d.dll was not found.

The wording varies with the Windows version and the program attempting to start. “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may have found msvcr110d.dll but failed to load another dependency required by it or by the application.

The exact spelling is important. msvcr110.dll and msvcr110d.dll require different troubleshooting paths.

First decision: released application or developer build

If this is a normal application or game

The most likely explanation is that the publisher shipped a Debug build, copied a Debug dependency into the release package, or lost a local application file during an update or reinstall.

The definitive fix is to repair or reinstall the affected program using its official installer or launcher. If the publisher continues to ship a program that requests msvcr110d.dll, contact that publisher and request a corrected Release build.

Do not try to solve a commercial software packaging problem by downloading the DLL separately.

If this is your own program or an internal test build

The program was likely compiled with the debug runtime, commonly through the /MDd runtime option. A developer or test machine may need the matching Visual Studio development environment or the corresponding debug files from a licensed Visual Studio installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft states that its debug runtime libraries are intended for testing and are not redistributable to ordinary end users. Review Microsoft’s guidance for preparing a test machine to run a debug executable.

For a release application, rebuild the program and all native dependencies in Release mode using the release runtime, commonly /MD. Rebuilding only the main executable may not be enough if one of its native DLLs still uses the Debug runtime.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected program

This is the safest and most likely fix for a game, commercial application, SDK utility, or hardware tool.

Use Windows repair options

Some desktop programs provide their own repair entry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close the affected program.
  2. Press Windows and type Installed apps.
  3. Open Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected program.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the program again.

Not every desktop application exposes Repair. If the option is missing or does not help, use the publisher’s installer or launcher.

Reinstall from the official source

  1. Close the application and its launcher.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Apps, then Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
  6. Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it.
  7. Download the installer again from the software publisher or sign in to the official launcher.
  8. Install the program to its normal location.
  9. Launch it before adding modifications, unofficial patches, or third-party DLL files.

If the application has a launcher with a Verify, Scan, Repair, or Verify integrity command, use that first. Such a feature can restore the complete application package and preserve the correct architecture and dependency set.

How to tell whether this worked

The repair succeeded if the program starts without the msvcr110d.dll message. If the same exact error returns immediately after a clean official reinstall, the publisher may have packaged a Debug build or one of its bundled native libraries may still reference the debug runtime.

At that point, record:

  • The exact executable name.
  • The complete error text.
  • The application version shown in its About or launcher screen.
  • Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Whether msvcp110d.dll, mfc110d.dll, or another file is also named.

Send those details to the application publisher rather than replacing DLLs manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Confirm whether the Visual C++ package is actually the right one

Microsoft provides Visual C++ 2012 release redistributables with names such as vcredist_x86.exe and vcredist_x64.exe. The official Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 Download Center page provides release packages, not a general download for msvcr110d.dll.

Install or repair the release package only when the error names msvcr110.dll, without the final d.

Choose the correct architecture

  • A 32-bit program needs the x86 runtime.
  • A 64-bit program needs the x64 runtime.
  • A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit programs, so a 64-bit operating system does not automatically mean that x64 is the correct package.
  • Many computers legitimately have both x86 and x64 release runtimes installed.

Microsoft explains the architecture requirement in its supported Visual C++ Redistributable guidance.

Repair a release runtime

If the error is for msvcr110.dll:

  1. Download the appropriate Visual C++ 2012 package from Microsoft.
  2. Right-click the downloaded installer.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. Accept the Microsoft license terms.
  5. Choose Repair if the installer offers it.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Start the affected application again.

If the installer reports that the package is already installed, use its Repair option rather than repeatedly installing unrelated Visual C++ versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why this does not normally fix msvcr110d.dll

The release redistributable contains release runtime components. It does not normally contain Microsoft’s Debug CRT. Therefore, a successful vcredist installation does not prove that the exact msvcr110d.dll dependency has been repaired.

Visual C++ 2015 through newer releases also do not replace the VC++ 2012 runtime. Older Visual C++ runtimes remain side by side because applications can depend on specific runtime generations.

Fix 3: Restore files through the application’s launcher

A missing file may have been deleted from the application folder even when the publisher supplied a correct Release build.

Possible causes include:

  • An interrupted update.
  • A failed installation.
  • A cleanup utility.
  • A disk error.
  • An antivirus quarantine.
  • A manual deletion.
  • A damaged or incomplete game library.

Use the launcher’s file verification feature where available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Typical steps are:

  1. Open the official game or application launcher.
  2. Open the library or installed-products list.
  3. Find the affected program.
  4. Open its settings or three-dot menu.
  5. Select Verify, Scan, Repair, or an equivalent command.
  6. Wait for the launcher to compare and restore files.
  7. Restart the launcher.
  8. Start the program again.

This approach is safer than copying one DLL because the launcher can restore the complete package, including related native files and the correct architecture.

If verification reports that files were repaired but the program still requests msvcr110d.dll, the package itself may contain a debug dependency. Save the launcher log if one is available and report the issue to the publisher.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security Protection History

Microsoft Defender may quarantine a file from an application directory. Do not immediately restore a quarantined DLL merely because its filename appears in an error message.

Check the quarantine record

  1. Press Windows and type Windows Security.
  2. Open Windows Security.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review recent detections.
  6. Open a detection that refers to the affected application or file.
  7. Record the detection name and file path.

If the program came from an unknown installer, do not restore the file. Remove the application and obtain it again from the publisher.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the application is trusted and the detection appears to be a false positive:

  1. Confirm that the installer came from the official publisher.
  2. Scan the installer and application directory.
  3. Check the file properties and digital signature when available.
  4. Compare the detection with the publisher’s support information.
  5. Restore or allow the item only when its legitimacy is established.
  6. Reinstall the complete application if possible.

Microsoft explains how Protection History handles quarantined items. Restoring a quarantined item can cause Defender to detect it again unless it is explicitly allowed.

How to tell whether quarantine was the cause

After restoring a verified file or reinstalling the application, launch the program again. If Defender immediately quarantines the same file, stop restoring it repeatedly. The file may be modified, incorrectly packaged, or genuinely unsafe. Contact the publisher and provide the detection details.

Fix 5: Check architecture and related dependencies

A 32-bit program and a 64-bit program cannot use interchangeable builds of every native dependency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the application’s documentation, launcher settings, or executable properties to determine its architecture. If you are the developer, inspect the project configuration and the native dependency chain.

For a debug application, verify all of the following:

  • x86 versus x64.
  • Visual C++ 2012 versus another compiler generation.
  • Debug versus Release configuration.
  • msvcr110d.dll versus msvcr110.dll.
  • Related files such as msvcp110d.dll and mfc110d.dll.
  • Whether the application is loading a native DLL from an unexpected folder.
  • Whether the named DLL exists but one of its dependencies is missing.

Avoid mixing files from different Visual Studio installations or copying a file from another computer simply because the name matches. A file can have the correct filename but still be incompatible with the application’s architecture, compiler build, or dependency set.

If the error says “The specified module could not be found” while msvcr110d.dll is visibly present, use a reputable dependency analysis method or ask the software developer to inspect the import chain. The missing item may be a second runtime DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Developer and test-machine deployment

A developer who intentionally runs a Debug build has a different repair path from a consumer.

Microsoft documents the Debug CRT in Visual Studio installation folders such as:

Debug_NonRedist\x86
Debug_NonRedist\x64

The component is associated with:

Microsoft.VC110.DebugCRT

The exact location depends on the Visual Studio installation and selected components.

Recommended developer procedure

  1. Install the appropriate Visual Studio development environment on the test machine.
  2. Make sure the Visual C++ tools and matching platform components are installed.
  3. Confirm whether the application is x86 or x64.
  4. Build the program and every native dependency with the same intended configuration.
  5. Run the Debug build on the test machine.
  6. If the program still fails, inspect related debug dependencies such as msvcp110d.dll or mfc110d.dll.
  7. For a public release, rebuild in Release mode and test the resulting package on a clean machine.

A controlled copy from a licensed Visual Studio installation may be appropriate for a developer or test machine when the architecture and toolset match. It is not a general consumer download and should not be used to distribute Microsoft debug DLLs with commercial software.

Microsoft’s DLL deployment guidance distinguishes local testing from redistribution to end users.

Fix 7: Repair broader Windows component corruption

Because msvcr110d.dll is not normally a Windows component, System File Checker is not expected to restore it. Run Windows repair commands only when other Windows features are also failing or there is broader evidence of system corruption.

Run DISM first

  1. Press Windows.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish.
  2. Restart Windows.

Run SFC second

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the affected program.

Understand the result

DISM and SFC can repair Windows components and protected system files. They do not normally install the Visual Studio 2012 Debug CRT into an application folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If SFC reports that it repaired files but the exact msvcr110d.dll error remains, that result does not contradict the diagnosis. The missing dependency is still likely part of the application package or a developer deployment.

When repeating DISM and SFC manually, it can be difficult to identify which component changed or whether the commands addressed the actual problem. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it identifies, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when the DLL belongs to that application.

Fix 8: Check a hardware utility, SDK, or driver package

A hardware utility, firmware tool, SDK sample, or user-mode component bundled with a driver package may have been compiled against the Debug CRT. In that case, updating a generic Windows driver is unlikely to solve the error.

First identify the executable that displays the message. If it belongs to a printer utility, USB SDK, graphics tool, engineering package, or firmware program, reinstall the complete vendor package from the vendor’s official source.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Use Device Manager only when the device is clearly involved

  1. Press Windows + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category associated with the affected hardware.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Review the provider, date, and version.
  8. Select Driver Details to see whether the installed driver package contains related files.
  9. If an update is genuinely available from the hardware manufacturer, obtain it from that manufacturer.
  10. Install the complete package and restart Windows.

Do not uninstall an unknown device or remove a working driver merely because an unrelated application reports msvcr110d.dll.

When manually hunting through Device Manager and manufacturer pages, it is easy to select the wrong hardware revision or miss several stale components. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan that identifies driver problems, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and the hardware vendor’s complete package remains the right fix for a tool that was incorrectly built.

How to tell whether the driver package was involved

The fix worked if the specific hardware utility starts and the device still appears normally in Device Manager. If the utility continues to request msvcr110d.dll, ask the hardware vendor for a corrected release build or a supported developer deployment.

A normal Windows kernel-driver update is not a general repair for this runtime error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 9: Check Windows Features only for separate legacy requirements

Windows Features does not provide msvcr110d.dll. Do not enable random features as a substitute for repairing the application.

For a separate legacy game or application requirement:

  1. Press Windows.
  2. Type Turn Windows features on or off.
  3. Open the matching Control Panel result.
  4. Review the listed optional features.
  5. Enable only a feature identified by the application’s official documentation.
  6. Select OK.
  7. Restart Windows if requested.
  8. Test the application again.

Some older programs need an optional Windows component such as legacy DirectPlay, but that is a separate dependency. It does not install the Visual C++ 2012 Debug CRT.

Similarly, installing a newer DirectX package or a .NET runtime may help only when the error names a DirectX or .NET component. It does not normally resolve an exact msvcr110d.dll request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 10: Use System Restore only after a recent system change

System Restore is reasonable when the error began immediately after a known cleanup, update, driver installation, or application change and a suitable restore point exists.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the applications and drivers that may be changed.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, and installed programs without normally changing personal files. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore documentation.

Do not use System Restore as the first response to an isolated application error. It will not turn a Debug build into a Release build and may not restore a missing application-local DLL.

Why regsvr32 does not fix this error

Do not run:

regsvr32 msvcr110d.dll

msvcr110d.dll is a runtime library, not normally a COM or ActiveX component that registers itself in the Windows Registry. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that export a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you try to register a DLL without that entry point, Windows may report:

The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.

Microsoft explains the purpose and limitations of the Regsvr32 tool.

Registering a runtime DLL also would not repair a missing dependency, wrong architecture, damaged binary, or incorrectly packaged application.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

Do not download msvcr110d.dll from a random DLL download website and place it in System32, SysWOW64, or the game directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A loose DLL may be:

  • Modified or malicious.
  • The wrong architecture.
  • From a different Visual Studio update.
  • Incompatible with the application’s dependency chain.
  • Missing required companion files.
  • Incorrectly named to resemble a Microsoft component.

It also leaves the original packaging problem unresolved. A debug DLL copied into a released application may allow one startup attempt while creating a different loader or compatibility error later.

Safe sources are:

  • The affected application’s official repair or reinstall process.
  • The application publisher’s official release build.
  • Microsoft’s official Visual C++ 2012 release redistributable when the error is for msvcr110.dll, not msvcr110d.dll.
  • A matching licensed Visual Studio installation on a controlled developer or test machine.

Microsoft’s debug-runtime guidance specifically distinguishes testing from redistribution. The absence of a normal public redistributable package for msvcr110d.dll is intentional.

Check an installed copy without guessing its version

Microsoft does not publish one universal desktop version, size, or checksum for every msvcr110d.dll. Different Visual Studio updates, architectures, SDKs, and application-local copies can differ.

If you already have a copy from a trusted installation, inspect its metadata in PowerShell:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
(Get-Item "C:\path\to\msvcr110d.dll").VersionInfo |
  Select-Object FileVersion, ProductVersion, FileDescription, CompanyName

Replace the path with the actual file location.

This inspection can help a developer compare a test-machine copy with the build environment. It does not establish that the file is correct for an unrelated application. Do not use a version number, size, or hash from a different package as a universal answer.

A practical escalation checklist

If the error remains after repair or reinstall, work through this list:

  1. Confirm the final d is present in the filename.
  2. Identify the exact executable that displays the message.
  3. Determine whether the program is a Debug build.
  4. Check whether the program is x86 or x64.
  5. Check for msvcp110d.dll, mfc110d.dll, and other missing dependencies.
  6. Use the official launcher’s Verify or Repair function.
  7. Review Windows Security Protection History.
  8. Remove and reinstall the complete application from its official source.
  9. Ask the publisher whether the package was built with the Debug CRT.
  10. Run DISM and SFC only when broader Windows corruption is suspected.
  11. Use Device Manager only when the failing executable belongs to a clearly related hardware package.
  12. Use System Restore only when the error follows a known recent system change.
  13. For an internal build, return the issue to the developer and rebuild the application in Release mode.

When contacting the publisher or developer, provide the exact error, application version, executable name, operating-system architecture, and whether the program works on the build machine. Do not send a random DLL as a workaround.

Frequently asked questions

Is msvcr110d.dll part of Windows?

No. It is the Visual C++ 2012 Debug C Runtime associated with Visual Studio development and testing. Windows does not normally restore it to System32 or SysWOW64.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will the Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable fix msvcr110d.dll?

Normally no. The standard VC++ 2012 Redistributable supplies release files such as msvcr110.dll. It does not normally supply the Debug CRT file with the final d.

Should I install the x86 or x64 package?

For the release runtime, match the program, not merely the Windows installation. A 32-bit program needs x86, while a 64-bit program needs x64. Many 64-bit Windows systems need both release packages for different applications.

This architecture choice does not make the release package a solution for an exact msvcr110d.dll error.

Can I copy the file from another computer?

For ordinary users, no. A copied file may be the wrong architecture, toolset, or update level. A controlled copy from a matching licensed Visual Studio installation can be appropriate for a developer test machine, but Microsoft debug DLLs should not be distributed with a public application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the program say a module is missing when the DLL is visible?

The named DLL may depend on another missing or incompatible file. The application may also be loading a copy from a different directory than the one you inspected. Dependency analysis and the application publisher’s support process are more useful than repeatedly copying the visible file.

Does SFC restore msvcr110d.dll?

No. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. Because msvcr110d.dll is normally a Visual Studio debug runtime rather than a Windows component, SFC is not expected to restore it.

Should I register the file with regsvr32?

No. Runtime libraries do not normally register themselves with regsvr32. Registration does not repair missing dependencies or replace an incorrectly packaged application.

Is this the same as msvcr110.dll?

No. msvcr110.dll is the release Visual C++ 2012 runtime. msvcr110d.dll is its Debug counterpart. The final d changes the required package and the correct repair path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the file was quarantined?

Verify the application’s source and scan the installer before restoring anything. Prefer reinstalling the complete application from its official source. Restore or allow a quarantined file only after confirming that it is legitimate and belongs to a trusted installation.

What is the definitive fix for a developer build?

Install the matching Visual Studio development tools on the test machine, or deploy the matching Debug CRT from the licensed Visual Studio installation in a controlled testing environment. For a public release, rebuild the application and all native dependencies in Release mode with the release runtime.

What if the application is a game?

Use the game launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Scan function, then reinstall the game from its official source if necessary. If the game still requests msvcr110d.dll, the publisher likely needs to provide a corrected release package rather than asking users to download the debug DLL.
