“The program can’t start because OLEAUT32.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”
You may also see “A required DLL file … oleaut32.dll was not found,” “The ordinal could not be located in the dynamic link library OLEAUT32.dll,” or “The file C:\Windows\System32\oleaut32.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.” Installer messages can instead say that oleaut32.dll could not be opened.

The 60-second answer
oleaut32.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system library used by COM and OLE Automation. It supports Automation data types and operations used by older Visual Basic applications, Office automation, VBA-related software, ActiveX controls, type libraries, installers, and other native Windows programs. It is not a DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++ Redistributable file.

Use this order:
- Install all available Windows updates and restart.
- Run DISM, then System File Checker from an administrator Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Repair or reinstall the affected application if only one program fails.
- Check Windows Security Protection History if antivirus may have quarantined the file.
- Investigate 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility if the message mentions an ordinal, entry point, or Bad Image.
- Use System Restore or Windows recovery if broader system corruption remains.
The most useful clue is scope. If several unrelated programs fail, investigate Windows itself. If only one old application fails, repair that application before changing system components.
What oleaut32.dll does
The name comes from OLE Automation, a Windows technology used for communication between applications and components. oleaut32.dll provides system functionality associated with:
- COM and OLE Automation.
BSTRstrings.VARIANTvalues.SAFEARRAYdata.- Type libraries.
- Standard OLE font and picture objects.
- ActiveX-related functionality.
Microsoft documents the relationship between Automation, type libraries, and COM components in its OLE Automation documentation and ActiveX controls documentation.

This is why the file can appear in very different situations. An old VB6 application may use it, but that does not mean every application reporting it was written in Visual Basic. Native C or C++ software, Office automation programs, line-of-business systems, installers, and applications using COM components can also depend on it.
oleaut32.dll ships with Windows. Microsoft’s Visual Basic 6 support policy lists it among runtime files supplied by the operating system. A separate Visual Basic package is therefore not the normal answer to a damaged Windows copy.
Where Windows stores the file
On 64-bit Windows, the two system directories have names that confuse many users:
%WINDIR%\System32\oleaut32.dll
%WINDIR%\SysWOW64\oleaut32.dll
The meanings are:
| Location | Copy used by |
|---|---|
%WINDIR%\System32 |
Native 64-bit Windows components and 64-bit applications |
%WINDIR%\SysWOW64 |
32-bit applications running under Windows 64-bit compatibility support |
System32 contains the native 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows. SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit redirected files. Microsoft explains this behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Do not copy the file from SysWOW64 into System32, or the other way around. A 32-bit VB6 program can require the 32-bit copy even when the 64-bit copy looks healthy.
On 32-bit Windows, there is no 64-bit-versus-32-bit pair in the same way. The exact Windows directory can also differ if Windows was installed somewhere other than the usual location, which is why %WINDIR% is safer than assuming C:\Windows.
What the error wording tells you
The same filename can represent several different failures.
“oleaut32.dll is missing” or “was not found”
This usually means that Windows or the application could not load a usable copy. The file may genuinely be missing, quarantined, damaged, inaccessible, or the application may be looking through the wrong search path.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A missing-file dialog does not prove that the physical file is absent. A dependent DLL, invalid application-local copy, architecture mismatch, or damaged program can produce a similar result.
“The ordinal could not be located”
An ordinal-not-found message usually indicates an API compatibility problem. The application requested a function export that the loaded DLL does not provide.
Possible causes include:
- A very old application designed for an earlier Windows release.
- A 32-bit and 64-bit component mismatch.
- An incorrect application-local copy of a system DLL.
- A damaged or mismatched Windows component.
- An installer using the wrong version of a dependency.
Registering the file will not normally add a missing export. This needs an architecture or version investigation.
“The file is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”
This is the generic Bad Image class of error. It can be associated with a corrupted system file, incorrect architecture, a damaged dependent component, or an application that loaded an incompatible binary.
An error status such as 0xc000007b often points toward an architecture or invalid-image problem, but the status alone does not identify the exact cause.
“The file could not be opened”
Installers sometimes display a message saying that C:\Windows\System32\oleaut32.dll could not be opened and ask you to check disk space or access permissions. This does not necessarily mean the DLL itself is missing. The installer may be failing because of permissions, a locked file, a damaged package, a security product, or a problem with the installer’s own operation.
First, identify the failure pattern
Before running commands, answer these questions:
- Does one program fail, or do several unrelated programs fail?
- Does the error name
System32orSysWOW64? - Did the problem begin after Windows Update?
- Did antivirus report a quarantine event?
- Is the affected program a 32-bit legacy application?
- Does the message mention an ordinal, entry point, or Bad Image?
- Can other COM, VB6, Office, or Windows programs start?
- Did the issue follow a disk problem, malware event, failed installation, or interrupted update?
Use this quick diagnosis:
| Pattern | Most likely direction |
|---|---|
| Several unrelated applications fail | Repair Windows with updates, DISM, and SFC |
| One traditional desktop program fails | Repair or reinstall that program |
| Only an old 32-bit program fails | Check 32-bit compatibility and its installer |
| Failure follows an antivirus event | Review Protection History |
| Office automation stopped after an update | Install the latest cumulative Windows update |
| Ordinal or entry-point error | Investigate architecture and version compatibility |
| Many DLLs fail across Windows | Check for broader corruption, malware, or disk problems |
Fix 1: Install Windows updates first
Windows updates can repair protected system files and correct compatibility problems without requiring manual file replacement.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart Windows, even if the update process does not insist on it.
- Try the affected program again.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Microsoft’s current instructions are available in Install Windows updates.
When an update caused the problem
A current example involves an OLE Automation compatibility issue introduced by June 2026 Windows security updates. Some third-party applications could fail when launching Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, or documents through automation. Microsoft listed examples including CCH Engagement, Workpaper Manager, Dentrix, Softdent, and Zotero.
That issue did not necessarily produce an oleaut32.dll missing message. The file could be present while the application’s OLE Automation call failed.
Microsoft documented fixes in updates released from July 14, 2026 onward, including:
- KB5101650 for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2.
- KB5101649 for Windows 11 26H1.
- KB5099539 for Windows 10 systems covered by Extended Security Updates.
See Microsoft’s KB5101650 documentation for the Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 issue and fix. The relevant Windows 10 fixes apply only to systems covered by the appropriate servicing program. Windows 10 reached the end of general support on October 14, 2025.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Windows Update reports that the device is current but the application still fails, continue with DISM and SFC rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
When several programs fail, a Windows component fails, or the message points into System32 or SysWOW64, repair Windows itself.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the Windows component store that SFC uses as its repair source.
Open an administrator Terminal
On Windows 11:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin).
- Select Yes when User Account Control asks for permission.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
Run DISM
Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Allow it to finish. The percentage can remain unchanged for a while. Do not close the window simply because progress appears to pause.
A successful result reports that the restore operation completed successfully or that corruption was repaired. If DISM reports that it could not obtain the repair source, make sure Windows Update works, restart, and run the command again. Microsoft also documents using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess when Windows Update cannot supply the required files. The source must match the installed Windows edition and architecture.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, enter:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
The result may say:
- No integrity violations were found.
- Corrupt files were found and repaired.
- Corrupt files were found but some could not be repaired.
Restart Windows after SFC completes, then test the application.
If SFC repaired files, the original Windows copy of oleaut32.dll should be restored through Windows servicing. If SFC could not repair everything, restart and run DISM followed by SFC once more. If the same failures remain, move to System Restore or Windows recovery rather than manually replacing the DLL.
Microsoft’s complete procedure is in Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.
Running SFC and DISM by hand is safe, but it can leave you hunting through logs and repeating repairs without knowing what changed. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it finds; repairing detected problems is done by the full version, and it is optional.
Fix 3: Repair the affected application
If only one application fails and other Windows and COM programs work, the application installation is the leading suspect.
Repair a Microsoft Store or modern Windows app
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Start the program again.
The Repair option attempts to correct the installation without removing its data. If it does not help, the same page may offer Reset, which can remove app data, or you can uninstall and reinstall the application.
Repair a traditional desktop application
- Open Start.
- Type Control Panel.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Select Repair or Change, if the installer provides that option.
- Follow the program’s repair wizard.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Test the application.
Microsoft describes these procedures in Repair apps and programs in Windows.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the program has no Repair option, uninstall it from its official installer or Windows Apps settings, restart, and reinstall it from the publisher’s original installation media or official download. Do not allow a third-party installer to place its own copy of oleaut32.dll into the Windows system directories.
Repair a game installation
If the error appears only when starting a game, use the game launcher’s file-verification or repair feature. This repairs the game’s own files and may correct a damaged application dependency.
It does not repair Windows’ protected oleaut32.dll. If verification succeeds but the same system DLL error remains, run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
Fix 4: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine a file after detecting suspicious activity. A false positive is possible, but restoring a file without verifying it can reintroduce malware.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Review Windows Security Protection History

- Type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open an event that refers to
oleaut32.dllor the affected application.
Check:
- The exact file path.
- The detection name.
- Whether the file belongs under the Windows directory.
- Whether the event occurred during a trusted Windows update or application installation.
- Whether the digital signature and source are trustworthy.
Restore or allow the file only when you have verified that it is legitimate and that the original installation is trusted. If the file came from an unknown download, leave it quarantined, remove the suspicious application, update Defender, and run a scan.
Microsoft explains these decisions in Protection History in the Windows Security app.
After a verified false positive, run DISM and SFC. Windows servicing is safer than copying an isolated DLL back into place.
For a deeper check:
- Return to Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
- If the problem followed suspicious software, consider Microsoft Defender Antivirus offline scan from the same screen.
The offline scan restarts the computer and scans before the normal Windows environment fully loads. Save work before starting it.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Architecture problems are especially common with old VB6 applications, legacy installers, and COM components.
Visual Basic 6 applications remain 32-bit applications. On 64-bit Windows, they normally use the 32-bit Windows components through the compatibility environment, including the copy under SysWOW64.
Check the application architecture
Windows does not always display a simple “32-bit” label for traditional desktop programs, but these clues are useful:
- Old VB6 software is 32-bit.
- A program installed under
C:\Program Files (x86)is generally 32-bit. - A program installed under
C:\Program Filesmay be 64-bit, though installation paths are not absolute proof. - An installer that uses old 16-bit or legacy paths may not be compatible with modern Windows.
- An ordinal or entry-point error is more suggestive of compatibility than a straightforward missing-file message.
Do not exchange the System32 and SysWOW64 copies. Do not place either copy beside an application unless the software publisher specifically designed and supports that deployment.
Check the location named by the error
If the message names:
C:\Windows\System32\oleaut32.dll
it is referring to the native 64-bit system directory on 64-bit Windows.
If it names:
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\oleaut32.dll
it is referring to the 32-bit system directory.
A healthy file in one directory does not prove that the other architecture is healthy.
Repair the old application or installer
For an old application:
- Check the publisher’s current compatibility guidance.
- Install the latest supported update for that application.
- Run its installer using Run as administrator only when the publisher requires it.
- Repair or reinstall the application.
- Test it using the architecture it was designed for.
- If it still reports an ordinal or entry-point error, contact the application vendor or replace the incompatible software.
An old application may use an obsolete API or installer assumption even when Windows’ copy of oleaut32.dll is correct.
Fix 6: Understand when regsvr32 applies
Do not run this as a general repair command:
regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 does not download, replace, validate, or repair a damaged system DLL. It is intended for a DLL that implements the self-registration entry point expected by the tool. Many DLLs are not self-registering.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Running regsvr32 against the wrong file can produce errors such as:
- The module was loaded but the entry point was not found.
- The module failed to load.
- The specified procedure could not be found.
- A required dependency could not be found.
- The module may be incompatible with the version of Windows.
Those messages do not establish that registration is needed. They can indicate a missing dependency or an architecture mismatch.
Microsoft documents the limitations in How to use the Regsvr32 tool and troubleshoot Regsvr32 error messages.
If a vendor explicitly tells you to register a different COM DLL, use the matching executable:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors%WINDIR%\System32\regsvr32.exe
for a 64-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows, and:
%WINDIR%\SysWOW64\regsvr32.exe
for a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows.
Never use:
regsvr32 /u oleaut32.dll
as a reinstall or repair command. Unregistering a system DLL is not a substitute for Windows servicing and can create another problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Check Windows Features only when the application requires one
Windows Features do not normally install or repair oleaut32.dll. Do not enable random Windows components because an application displays a DLL error.
Some legacy programs may separately require an older Windows feature, such as a legacy .NET component. That is a different dependency and should be enabled only when the program’s documentation or its installer explicitly identifies it.
To inspect Windows Features:
- Open Start.
- Type Control Panel.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Review the features requested by the application’s documentation.
- Select only the required feature.
- Select OK.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
If enabling a required feature fixes the application, the original failure was likely a missing application prerequisite rather than a missing oleaut32.dll. If the file error remains, return to application repair and Windows component repair.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Fix 8: Update a driver only when evidence points to one
A graphics, chipset, storage, or device-driver reinstall is not a standard fix for oleaut32.dll. Consider it only when:
- The crash report names a specific driver.
- The problem began immediately after a driver installation.
- Only one hardware-dependent program fails.
- Device Manager reports a device problem.
- The application fails during a particular hardware operation rather than at general startup.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category associated with the failing application, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Storage controllers.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the specific device.
- Select Properties.
- Review the General tab and Device status.
- Review the Driver tab for the provider, date, and version.
- Install a newer driver from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer when the evidence points to that device.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not use Device Manager to replace oleaut32.dll. It manages drivers, not Windows system DLLs.
Checking Device Manager one entry at a time means guessing which of dozens of drivers is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan that identifies outdated drivers; installing them is done by the full version, and it is optional.
If the file belongs to a specific application or game, reinstalling that program remains the definitive fix for its own damaged files.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 9: Use System Restore or Windows recovery
If DISM and SFC cannot restore Windows, or the problem began after a recent installation, update, driver, or malware event, use a recovery option.
Try System Restore
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Next.
- Select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restore.
System Restore affects system files, drivers, settings, and installed programs. It does not normally remove personal documents, but review the affected programs shown before confirming.
Microsoft’s instructions are in System Restore.
Use Windows 11 “Reinstall now”
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Look for Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version through Windows Update while attempting to preserve applications, files, and settings. Availability depends on the Windows installation and update state.
Use Windows Recovery Environment
If Windows will not boot normally:
- Start Windows Recovery Environment from the recovery screen or installation media.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Try Startup Repair.
- If the issue began after a recent update, review Uninstall Updates.
- If an appropriate restore point exists, select System Restore.
- Use Reset this PC only after backing up important data and reviewing the available options.
Microsoft lists the available paths in Recovery options in Windows.

Legacy Visual Basic 6 programs
VB6 applications are a common context for oleaut32.dll, but the correct fix depends on what is actually failing.
First repair the Windows installation with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. Then repair the VB6 application or installer. Check that it is compatible with the installed Windows version and that it is using the correct 32-bit components.
Microsoft provides legacy VB6 packages, including the Visual Basic 6.0 SP6 oleaut32.DLL security update. This is not a general-purpose Windows 10 or Windows 11 DLL download. Use such a package only when a supported legacy VB6 deployment specifically requires it and its operating-system conditions match.
Do not install a VB6 package merely because an unrelated Windows application displays an oleaut32.dll error. Do not copy the package’s DLL into System32 or SysWOW64 by hand.
Why downloading the DLL is unsafe
Random DLL download sites create several risks:
- The file may contain malware.
- The version may not match the installed Windows build.
- The architecture may be wrong.
- The file may be modified or unsigned.
- A dependent component may still be broken.
- The application may be loading an incorrect private copy.
- The underlying Windows component store may remain damaged.
- Replacing a protected system file can cause additional servicing problems.
There is no current general-purpose oleaut32.dll redistributable for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Microsoft supplies this component through Windows servicing.
The safe sources are:
- Windows Update.
- DISM and SFC.
- Windows recovery features.
- The affected application’s official installer or repair function.
- A Microsoft-documented legacy package when its specific deployment requirements apply.
Do not copy the file from another computer, even if both computers appear to run the same Windows version. Servicing level, architecture, edition, and installed updates can differ.
Do not treat every error as a missing file
The file can be present while the application still fails because of:
- A dependent DLL.
- A 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch.
- An invalid application-local copy.
- An access or file-locking problem.
- A missing exported ordinal.
- A damaged application installation.
- A Windows update compatibility issue.
- Per-user COM or Office registration problems.
A new Windows user profile can help diagnose a per-user Office or COM configuration problem, but it will not repair a missing protected system DLL.
Likewise, a game launcher’s file verification repairs the game’s files. It does not repair Windows’ copy of oleaut32.dll.
FAQ
Is oleaut32.dll a virus?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows system component. Malware can use a similar filename or place an altered copy in an application directory. Check the full path, digital signature, and Windows Security Protection History rather than judging the filename alone.
Is `oleaut32.dll part of DirectX?
No. It is part of Windows OLE Automation. Installing DirectX does not normally repair it.
Is it part of the Visual C++ Redistributable?
No. Visual C++ Redistributable packages do not own this Windows system library.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is it part of .NET?
No. .NET applications can interact with COM, but .NET is not the owner of oleaut32.dll.
Does Microsoft provide a standalone download?
There is no general-purpose modern Windows 10 or Windows 11 oleaut32.dll redistributable. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, recovery tools, or the affected application’s official installer.
Should I register oleaut32.dll?
No. regsvr32 oleaut32.dll is not a general repair command. An ordinal, Bad Image, or missing-file error needs Windows servicing, application repair, or architecture investigation.
Why does a 32-bit program use SysWOW64?
On 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit redirected system files. The naming is counterintuitive but intentional. System32 is the native 64-bit directory.
Why does only one old program fail?
The application may have a damaged installation, an obsolete installer, an incompatible private dependency, or a 32-bit compatibility problem. Repair or reinstall that program before changing Windows system files.
Why did the problem start after a Windows update?
An update may have exposed an application compatibility problem or failed to complete component repair. Install the newest cumulative update, restart, and then run DISM followed by SFC.
What information should I provide when asking for help?
Include:
- The exact error text.
- The affected program.
- Whether one program or several fail.
- The Windows version and build.
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the message names
System32orSysWOW64. - Whether the issue began after Windows Update.
- Whether Windows Security quarantined a file.
- Whether DISM and SFC reported repairs or remaining errors.
For most genuine oleaut32.dll failures, the correct destination is clear: repair Windows when multiple components are affected, repair the application when only one program fails, and investigate architecture or update compatibility when the message mentions an ordinal, entry point, or Bad Image.
