The safest order is to install pending Windows updates, restart, repair the Windows component store with DISM, and then run System File Checker. Only investigate registration, antivirus quarantine, drivers, or application compatibility after those steps.

What is msvidctl.dll?
msvidctl.dll belongs to Microsoft’s legacy DirectShow and Microsoft TV Technologies stack. It is an ActiveX/COM video-control library associated with Microsoft Corporation, not a normal Visual C++ runtime file and not a separately distributed game DLL.
Microsoft developer documentation refers to the MS TV Video Control appearing after Msvidctl.dll is registered. DirectShow itself is now legacy technology, and Microsoft recommends newer Media Foundation and MediaPlayer APIs for new development.

The file may be involved when starting:
- An old television, capture, or multimedia application
- Legacy software that uses DirectShow
- An application restored from an older Windows installation
- A program damaged during an update, cleanup, malware removal, or incomplete installation
Not every current Windows 11 installation necessarily contains this legacy component. Its presence, location, and build depend on the Windows release, architecture, and servicing state.

|---|---|
| File | msvidctl.dll |
| Description | ActiveX control for streaming video |
| Component | Microsoft DirectShow |
| Publisher | Microsoft Corporation |
| Type | Windows component and legacy ActiveX/COM library |
| Usual system locations | C:WindowsSystem32 and, on 64-bit Windows, 32-bit components under C:WindowsSysWOW64 |
| Safe source | Windows servicing, recovery, or the affected application’s official installer |
| Not a normal fix | Downloading a DLL from a random website |
A file with this name in a program folder, Downloads folder, temporary directory, or a user-profile directory may not be genuine. The filename alone does not establish that it is a Microsoft file.
What the error means
Reported messages can vary:
- “The program can’t start because msvidctl.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because msvidctl.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting msvidctl.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading msvidctl.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “msvidctl.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages identify where the failure surfaced, not necessarily the exact cause.
The file itself is missing
If the expected Windows copy has been deleted, quarantined, or damaged, Windows component repair is the correct approach. Do not copy an unrelated file into System32 or SysWOW64.
A dependency is missing
“The specified module could not be found” can mean that Windows found msvidctl.dll but could not load one of its dependencies. Reinstalling the named DLL may therefore leave the real problem untouched.
The copy is incompatible or damaged
An incorrect architecture, Windows build, language, or servicing level can produce “not designed to run on Windows” and similar errors. A matching file from another computer is not automatically safe.
COM registration is damaged
Because msvidctl.dll exposes COM registration entry points, an old application may report a registration or class-not-registered error. Registration cannot recreate a missing file and is not the normal response to a missing-DLL message.

If Windows repairs successfully but one old program still fails, that program may have missing private files, an incomplete installation, or a dependency on deprecated ActiveX behavior. Repair or reinstall the application using its official installer.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Start with Windows Update because system-file repairs depend on a healthy servicing system.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Start the affected application again.
On Windows 10, Windows Update is under Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update.
If the error disappears, the missing or damaged component was likely restored during servicing. If it remains, continue with DISM and SFC rather than downloading the file.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its source.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to finish. It can appear to pause at a percentage for some time.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Keep the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward and test the program.
Interpret the result
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows did not detect damaged protected files. Investigate the application, dependencies, or registration.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the application.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If it still fails, use System Restore or Windows recovery.
- DISM reports that source files could not be found: Windows Update may be damaged. Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source with
/Sourceand/LimitAccess; use a source that matches the installed edition, architecture, and build.
Repeating SFC indefinitely will not solve a damaged servicing source. Escalate to recovery when the commands consistently fail.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen manually tracking component versions and repeating repair commands becomes guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows DISM/SFC or an in-place repair remains the appropriate path for a damaged system component.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If DISM and SFC complete normally but one program still reports msvidctl.dll, the application may be expecting DirectShow files or registration that its installer did not configure correctly.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu or the application entry.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the application and test it.
If there is no Repair option:
- Download or open the application’s official installer.
- Run the installer again.
- Choose Repair, Modify, or the equivalent option if offered.
- If repair is unavailable, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current version from the application’s official source.
For a game or launcher, use its built-in Verify files, Verify integrity, or Repair feature before reinstalling the entire program. If the error began immediately after an incomplete installation, application repair is more likely to help than a Windows DLL replacement.
Fix 4: Check Microsoft Defender Protection History
Antivirus quarantine can explain why a previously working application suddenly reports a missing Windows file.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open a detection that refers to
msvidctl.dll. - Check the original file path and detection details.
Only consider Restore or Allow on device when all of the following are true:
- The original location was a normal Windows system directory.
- The file is confirmed to be Microsoft-signed.
- The detection is understood to be a false positive or a known quarantine event.
- A full malware scan does not identify broader tampering.
Do not restore a file merely because its name matches. If it was located in Downloads, a temporary folder, an application folder you do not recognize, or a user-profile directory, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. Do not disable security software to force an unknown DLL to load.
Fix 5: Verify the file location, signature, and architecture
Use File Explorer to inspect the location, but do not replace the file manually.
- Press Windows + E.
- Select This PC.
- Open the Windows drive.
- Check
C:WindowsSystem32. - On 64-bit Windows, also understand that
C:WindowsSysWOW64is conventionally the location for 32-bit system binaries.
The names are confusing:
System32conventionally contains 64-bit system binaries on 64-bit Windows.SysWOW64conventionally contains 32-bit system binaries on 64-bit Windows.- A 32-bit program and a 64-bit program may therefore use different system copies.
Do not move a file from one directory to the other. Do not copy it from another computer. Windows build, architecture, language, servicing level, dependencies, and digital signature may differ.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To check a file’s signature:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select the signature.
- Choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature from Microsoft Corporation.
A valid signature does not prove that the file belongs in a particular application folder, but an unsigned copy in an unexpected location deserves suspicion.
Fix 6: Update drivers only when the error points to capture hardware
A driver is not the usual repair for a missing Windows DirectShow component. Consider driver troubleshooting only when the affected program uses a webcam, TV tuner, capture card, or other video hardware and the error began after a device or driver change.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras, Sound, video and game controllers, or Imaging devices.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If Windows cannot find a driver, use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page. Do not select unrelated devices or install a driver solely because it mentions DirectShow.
When several video and capture drivers are installed, Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers are outdated instead of making you hunt through device entries; its free scan identifies driver issues, while installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and the hardware manufacturer’s driver remains the definitive source for a device-specific problem.
Fix 7: Use Windows Features only for a specific legacy dependency
Turning Windows Features on and off at random will not normally restore msvidctl.dll. It can also remove components an older application needs.

regsvr32 registers a DLL that exposes the appropriate self-registration entry points. It does not download, repair, or recreate msvidctl.dll.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Use registration only when:
- The correct Microsoft file is already present.
- The application specifically reports a COM, class-registration, or ActiveX registration problem.
- Windows repair and application repair have not corrected the issue.
First close the affected application. Open Command Prompt as administrator and use the registration tool matching the DLL architecture.
For a 64-bit component on 64-bit Windows:
%windir%System32regsvr32.exe %windir%System32msvidctl.dll
For a 32-bit component on 64-bit Windows:
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe %windir%SysWOW64msvidctl.dll
On 32-bit Windows, the applicable system copy is normally under System32:
%windir%System32regsvr32.exe %windir%System32msvidctl.dll
A successful registration message means the selected DLL accepted the registration request. It does not prove that all dependencies are present or that the application is compatible.
If you see “The specified module could not be found,” the named DLL or one of its dependencies may be unavailable. If you see an architecture error, you used the wrong regsvr32.exe. Do not keep trying random copies.
Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the problem began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, or application installation.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Close, then Next.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. Save open work before proceeding.
If no suitable restore point exists, or the restore fails, use Windows recovery.
Fix 10: Repair Windows when DISM and SFC cannot recover it
Escalate to recovery when:
- DISM repeatedly cannot find source files.
- SFC repeatedly reports unrepaired corruption.
- Several Windows components are failing.
- The system was cloned, restored, or damaged by malware.
- The file is missing from a protected Windows location and no repair source is available.
Open Settings → System → Recovery on Windows 11, or Settings → Update & Security → Recovery on Windows 10. Review the available recovery options, including Reset this PC, and back up important files first.
A repair installation using matching Windows installation media can preserve applications and personal files when supported by the installation path. Follow Microsoft’s current recovery guidance and select the option that retains your data only after confirming that your backup is complete.
What not to do
Do not download a random DLL
DLL download sites sites may provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible Windows build, or a file with missing dependencies. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory can create new errors and bypass Windows servicing.
There is no Microsoft-supported standalone msvidctl.dll download package identified for this repair. Use Windows Update, DISM/SFC, Windows recovery, or the affected application’s official installer.
Do not install unrelated runtimes
Visual C++ Redistributables, .NET, and the DirectX End-User Runtime generally do not repair this Windows DirectShow component. Install them only when the error separately names a relevant runtime, such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll.
Do not assume the name proves the file is safe
A malicious file can use the same filename. Check its path, digital signature, Defender history, and the wider system state.
Do not disable security protections
If Defender detects a suspicious copy, investigate it and scan the computer. Disabling protection to make an unknown application start is not a repair.
Do not treat legacy ActiveX as current streaming technology
Microsoft has issued security updates and kill-bit mitigations for vulnerable msvidctl.dll ActiveX classes. Keep Windows updated and avoid enabling legacy browser or ActiveX behavior merely to make an old program work.
FAQ
Is msvidctl.dll a Windows file?
It is a Microsoft DirectShow component associated with Windows, but its availability can vary across Windows releases. It is not a universal, separately distributed runtime.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Should I download msvidctl.dll?
No. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, recovery, or the affected application’s official installer. A random download may be malicious or incompatible.
Will DirectX fix msvidctl.dll?
Not generally. DirectShow is related to the Windows media stack, but installing the DirectX End-User Runtime is not an established repair for this component.
Will Visual C++ fix it?
Not unless the error also names a Visual C++ runtime such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll. Those are different components.
Why does a game mention msvidctl.dll if Windows owns it?
An application can request a Windows component when it starts. The application displays the failure even though the missing or damaged component belongs to Windows.
Is regsvr32 required?
Only for a specific COM or ActiveX registration failure when the correct file is already present. It does not fix a missing file, damaged dependency, wrong architecture, or incompatible application.
What if only one old program still fails?
Repair or reinstall that program, verify its files through its launcher, and check whether it depends on legacy ActiveX behavior. If Windows passes DISM and SFC, the application is the more likely source of the remaining failure.
