What mswsock.dll does
Windows uses Winsock to provide network access to applications. mswsock.dll is Microsoft’s Winsock 2 service provider, working with the Windows Sockets interface and Ws2_32.dll to support TCP/IP applications, name resolution, and other socket operations. Microsoft describes this provider architecture in its Winsock documentation.

That means browsers, game launchers, online games, VPN clients, backup programs, download tools, and network utilities may load the file indirectly. The application showing the error is not necessarily the program that owns the problem.
Microsoft services this DLL as part of Windows. There is no official standalone Microsoft mswsock.dll download intended for manual replacement.

Where mswsock.dll should be
On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:
- Native 64-bit copy:
%SystemRoot%System32mswsock.dll - 32-bit copy used by 32-bit applications:
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64mswsock.dll
The names are counterintuitive. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files.
Finding one copy does not prove that the other architecture is intact. A 32-bit game or utility can fail because the SysWOW64 copy is damaged even when System32mswsock.dll exists.
Do not use an old file-size or version list as a replacement guide. Windows build, edition, architecture, and servicing level determine the correct file.
Fix mswsock.dll errors in order
1. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus a restart
This is the most important repair because Windows Resource Protection can restore protected system files. Microsoft documents DISM image repair and the SFC command separately.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a while.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Try the program that produced the error again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a repair source. SFC then checks protected files and replaces damaged copies where possible.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, restart and test the application. If it says that no integrity violations were found but the error remains, continue with the architecture and application checks below. If it says that some files could not be repaired, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC.
If DISM cannot find source files, a matching Windows installation source may be required with /Source and /LimitAccess. The source must closely match the installed Windows version. Do not substitute a random ISO or a DLL copied from another computer.
Repeating SFC and DISM manually can make it difficult to tell what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows repair issues and show what needs attention; its full version performs the repair, but it is not required, and a program-specific reinstall remains the definitive fix when only one application is affected.
2. Check the correct architecture with targeted SFC commands
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Use this step when the error appears only in a 32-bit application, or when a normal SFC scan did not resolve the problem.
First identify whether Windows is 64-bit:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type.
For the native Windows copy, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
sfc /verifyfile=%windir%System32mswsock.dll
This checks the file without repairing it. To repair that specific copy, run:
sfc /scanfile=%windir%System32mswsock.dll
On 64-bit Windows, check the 32-bit copy separately:
sfc /verifyfile=%windir%SysWOW64mswsock.dll
If it needs repair:
sfc /scanfile=%windir%SysWOW64mswsock.dll
Restart after a successful repair and test the affected program. If a 32-bit application still fails while the Windows copies pass inspection, the application installation or one of its own dependencies may be damaged.
3. Check antivirus quarantine and scan for malware
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Security software can quarantine a genuine system file after a detection or signature update. Malware can also remove the real file or place a fake file beside an application executable.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Inspect recent detections involving
mswsock.dll. - Record the path, detection name, and action before deleting the history.
- Do not restore the file based only on its filename.
- Verify that the path is an expected Windows directory and that the file is digitally signed by Microsoft.
- If the detection is not clearly a false positive, leave it quarantined.
- Run Scan options and choose a Full scan.
- For a persistent or serious infection, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
Microsoft explains Protection History and virus and threat protection.
If the file exists outside the expected Windows directories, do not assume it is legitimate. A fake DLL can be loaded from an application folder through normal DLL search behavior. Remove the malware with security software, then run DISM and SFC to restore the Windows copy.
4. Reset Winsock only when networking is also broken
Time needed: 5 minutes, plus a restart
A missing or corrupt DLL is different from a damaged Winsock catalog. VPNs, firewalls, traffic filters, and older network utilities can install third-party providers that leave Winsock configuration broken.
If multiple applications have network failures after the system-file repair:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
netsh winsock reset
- Restart Windows.
- Test the connection and affected applications.
This resets the Winsock catalog and can remove broken provider configuration. It does not replace mswsock.dll. The reset may affect VPN, firewall, traffic-monitoring, or network-filtering software, which may need repair or reinstallation afterward. See Microsoft’s netsh winsock reference.
5. Repair or reinstall the affected application
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
If Windows repair succeeds and only one game or program still reports mswsock.dll, the application may have a damaged installation, an incompatible bundled component, or a bad update.

For a Steam game, open Steam, go to Library, right-click the game, select Properties, choose Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Steam documents this process here.
Do not copy mswsock.dll into the game folder. That can conceal the real problem or create DLL hijacking risk.
6. Update network software and drivers when evidence points there
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A network-driver failure is not the normal direct cause of a missing mswsock.dll, but it can produce related connection failures. Check Device Manager only when it shows a warning or logs point to the adapter.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
If the issue began after a driver change, open the adapter’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available. You can also uninstall the device and restart Windows so it can detect the hardware again.
When several drivers are stale, manually identifying the correct model and package can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while the full version installs updates; use it only as an optional convenience, since driver repair is not a substitute for restoring a missing Windows DLL.
7. Use System Restore or Windows repair options
Time needed: 20–60 minutes
Use System Restore if the error began immediately after an update, cleanup, driver installation, or system change.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restore.
You can also open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.
If no restore point works and DISM cannot repair the component store, back up important data and use an in-place Windows repair installation or Windows recovery options. Do not take ownership of mswsock.dll or disable Windows Resource Protection to force a copied file into place.

The exact cause depends on what changed before the message appeared:
- Windows system-file corruption or deletion after an interrupted update, disk problem, failed servicing, or malware cleanup
- Antivirus quarantine or a false positive
- Malware or DLL hijacking
- A broken Winsock catalog or third-party network provider
- A 32-bit and 64-bit architecture mismatch
- A copied file from another Windows release with incompatible exports
- Damage limited to one game or application
- A network-driver problem causing related symptoms
An entry-point message such as “The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library MSWSOCK.dll” usually indicates a mismatched or damaged version, not simple absence. Repair Windows and the affected application rather than registering or replacing the DLL.
Do not register mswsock.dll
Do not run:
regsvr32 mswsock.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. mswsock.dll is a Winsock provider, not a typical self-registering component. Registration will not repair it and may produce a DllRegisterServer failure. Microsoft explains this distinction in its DLL registration guidance.
Should you download mswsock.dll
No. Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, or a version from a different Windows release. A manually copied file also leaves the original corruption, quarantine, Winsock configuration, or application damage unresolved.

FAQ
Is mswsock.dll malware?
No, the genuine Windows component is a Microsoft file. A file with the same name is not automatically safe: verify its Windows location, Microsoft digital signature, and security history.
Is mswsock.dll part of Visual C++ or DirectX?
Usually no. It is part of Windows networking and is not supplied by those redistributable packages.
Why does the file exist in System32 but the program still fail?
The program may be 32-bit and require the copy under SysWOW64, or the file may be corrupted, mismatched, or blocked. Check the application architecture and run the targeted SFC commands for the relevant path.
Will netsh winsock reset restore the DLL?
No. It repairs Winsock catalog and provider configuration. Use DISM and SFC for a missing or damaged Windows file.
What if SFC and DISM both succeed?
If only one program fails, repair or reinstall that program. If several programs fail, investigate antivirus actions, malware, recent updates, and third-party VPN or firewall providers.
What is the safest first step?
Run DISM, then SFC from an elevated Command Prompt, restart, and apply pending Windows updates. That restores the Windows-owned component without introducing an untrusted DLL.
