The 60-second answer
msxactps.dll is a genuine Microsoft file named Microsoft Data Access – OLE DB Transaction Proxies/Stubs. It belongs to Microsoft Data Access Components, commonly abbreviated MDAC, and the technology later became Windows Data Access Components, or WDAC.

Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website. The safest repair is:
- Repair or reinstall the application that displays the error.
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Run DISM, then System File Checker.
- Check whether antivirus quarantined a Microsoft-signed component.
- Confirm that the application and data-access component use the correct 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
Microsoft treats modern WDAC as part of Windows rather than as a current standalone download. The file may be associated with older database software, installers, business applications, or other legacy programs, but the error does not identify the calling program by itself.

What msxactps.dll does
OLE DB is a Microsoft database-access technology. It allows applications and database providers to exchange data through standardized interfaces. A proxy or stub helps COM components communicate across process and interface boundaries.
That makes msxactps.dll a supporting component rather than an application you open directly. Its absence can prevent an older database tool, installer, or business program from starting even when Windows itself appears to work normally.
Historical MDAC file lists place the DLL at a path similar to:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemOle DBmsxactps.dll
That is not a universal location for every Windows release. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit application components commonly use the Program Files (x86) tree, while Windows also maintains architecture-specific copies in its component store. Do not assume that the file must be in System32, and do not copy it there merely because a website recommends doing so.
The filename alone is not evidence of malware. A file obtained from an unofficial source, however, cannot be trusted just because it has the right name.
What “the specified module could not be found” means
Windows loader messages are sometimes misleading. If an application reports:
Error loading msxactps.dll. The specified module could not be found.
the named DLL may be missing, but a dependency required by that DLL may also be missing or incompatible. The message does not prove that copying msxactps.dll beside the program will solve the problem.

The same distinction applies when the file appears to exist. A damaged dependency, incorrect registration, blocked file, wrong architecture, or incomplete application installation can produce a similar failure.
Identify the program that is failing
Before repairing anything, determine which program is requesting the DLL. That tells you whether to start with an application repair or Windows servicing.
Use the error dialog
Read the title bar and the text above the DLL message. The program name may appear there. If the error appears during startup, note which application launches immediately beforehand.
Also check whether the problem affects:
- One older application
- One installer
- A game or launcher
- Several unrelated programs
- Windows components generally
If only one program fails, repair that program first. If many programs fail, prioritize Windows repair and malware checks.
Recommended Free Tools
Check Reliability Monitor
- Press Windows key, type
reliability. - Open View reliability history.
- Select the red failure marker on the date and time of the problem.
- Expand View technical details.
- Look for the failed application name and faulting module.
Reliability Monitor may not name msxactps.dll, particularly when a dependency failed first, but it can identify the application that initiated the load.
Check Event Viewer
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Select errors recorded at the time of the failure.
- Read the application name, faulting module, and exception details.
Do not treat a generic application error as proof that the Windows DLL itself is defective. Use the event to identify the program and its installation path.
Fix 1: Repair the affected application
This is the best first step when one program reports the error and other applications work normally.
Repair a Microsoft Store or supported Windows application
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Repair normally preserves the application’s data. If it does not help, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you understand that the application may lose local settings or data.
Repair classic desktop software
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if available.
- Follow the installer’s instructions.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
Not every program provides a repair option. For older database software, use the original installer from the publisher or your organization’s approved software source. Avoid installing a separate MDAC package simply because a search result offers one.
Repair a game or launcher
Open the game launcher and look for a command named Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of game files. The exact wording varies by launcher.
If verification does not restore the required component, uninstall and reinstall the affected game or launcher using its official installation process. Do not assume that the game itself owns msxactps.dll; use the error, logs, or installer details to establish which program is requesting it.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if the affected application starts without the DLL message and its database or sign-in functions work normally. If the same error returns immediately, continue with Windows servicing rather than repeatedly copying DLL files.

Fix 2: Install Windows updates and restart
MDAC became WDAC as part of Windows, so Windows Update can deliver repairs and component updates that an old standalone installer cannot.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no further immediate updates are offered.
- Test the affected application.
If the problem began immediately after an update, record the update date before changing anything. A later cumulative update may correct the issue. If the update clearly triggered the failure and a restore point exists from before it, review the Windows recovery options before uninstalling updates.
Fix 3: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when the file may have been deleted, damaged, or made unavailable by component-store corruption. Run DISM first because SFC can use the repaired component store as its source.
Run DISM
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if DISM reports that a restart is required.
Do not close the administrator window merely because progress appears to pause. DISM may take time while checking and repairing the Windows image.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, open an administrator Terminal or Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the application.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that corrupt files were found and repaired. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files:
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM again.
- Run
sfc /scannowagain. - Review
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.logif deeper diagnosis is needed.
These commands repair Windows-managed files and are safer than inserting an unrelated DLL into an application folder.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRepeating DISM and SFC manually can make it difficult to tell what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it found, while the repair action is handled by the full version; it is optional, and official Windows repair remains the appropriate path for a damaged component.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a legitimate component after an update, cleanup operation, or false detection.
Check Windows Security
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the error began.
- Expand any entry associated with
msxactps.dllor the affected application.
Do not restore a file merely because its name matches. First confirm that it came from a legitimate Microsoft-managed Windows installation or the publisher’s installer. If the file came from a DLL download site, do not restore or whitelist it.
If a legitimate Microsoft-signed file was quarantined and the detection is demonstrably false, follow Windows Security’s restore and allow procedures. Defender may detect the file again unless the item is explicitly allowed. When uncertain, reinstall the application or repair Windows instead of creating an exclusion.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application can require 32-bit database components even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. Installing or copying a 64-bit replacement does not satisfy a 32-bit loader.
Check the application’s architecture in its publisher documentation or installation details. Do not infer it solely from the Windows edition.
Important points:
- A 32-bit program may use components under
Program Files (x86). - A 64-bit program may use components under
Program Files. - Windows component storage maintains architecture-specific copies.
- A file in
System32is not automatically the correct copy for every program. - The exact version and size vary with Windows release and servicing level.
If the application offers separate 32-bit and 64-bit installers, install the architecture it requires. For an old program, its original installer may be the only reliable way to restore companion OLE DB files and registrations.
To verify a replacement file, right-click it, select Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab. Confirm that the signer is Microsoft Corporation and that Windows reports the signature as valid. Also verify the file’s architecture with a trusted administrative or developer tool if the application publisher requires that check.
A valid signature does not prove that the file is the right architecture or version. Provenance, architecture, expected path, and compatibility all matter.
Fix 6: Check optional Windows components only when the application requires them
Windows Features is not a general-purpose MDAC download mechanism, and enabling unrelated features will not normally replace msxactps.dll. Use it only when the affected application’s documentation specifically requires a Windows feature.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the available features.
- Enable only the feature required by the application.
- Select OK.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable random legacy components as a substitute for repairing the application. If the program’s installer says that a particular Windows feature is missing, follow that documented requirement and then rerun the application installer.

Fix 7: Update a related driver only when evidence points to one
msxactps.dll is a data-access component, not normally a display, audio, storage, or network driver file. Device Manager is therefore not the first repair location. Use it only if the application also reports a device failure, the event log identifies a hardware-related dependency, or the program’s publisher requires a particular database or storage driver.
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For database connectivity, obtain the required provider or driver from Microsoft or the hardware and software publisher that supports it. Do not install a generic driver merely because the DLL error mentions a database component.
Manually checking dozens of devices and versions is time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show the detected issues, while driver installation is performed by the full version; it is optional, and it should not replace repairing the application that actually requested msxactps.dll.
Is regsvr32 the right fix?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 registers a DLL that provides COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Public metadata for a Microsoft-signed msxactps.dll sample shows registration-related exports, so registration may be technically possible for a matching copy.
Recommended Free Tools
Registration does not:
- Restore a deleted file
- Repair Windows component storage
- Install missing dependencies
- Correct a 32-bit versus 64-bit mismatch
- Fix an incomplete application installation
Use regsvr32 only when the official application installer or Microsoft-supported procedure specifically instructs you to register this matching DLL.
On 64-bit Windows, the two regsvr32.exe locations serve different architectures:
%windir%System32regsvr32.exe
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe
Despite the confusing names, System32 contains the 64-bit system tools and SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit tools on a 64-bit Windows installation. Using the wrong tool can produce an architecture error. Do not register a DLL downloaded from an unofficial site.
Do not copy msxactps.dll from a DLL website
A random download can be:
- The wrong architecture
- From an outdated MDAC build
- Modified or unsigned
- Missing required dependencies
- Incompatible with the calling application
- Placed in a path Windows does not use
It can also conceal the real cause, such as a damaged application installation or a dependency that is actually missing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe safe sources are the original application installer, Windows Update, DISM and SFC, a trusted Windows installation medium, or a known-good Microsoft-managed backup. If you recover a file manually, verify its Microsoft signature, architecture, version, expected path, and provenance before using it.
If the problem began after cleanup, an update, or malware
Match the repair to the event:
- After a disk cleanup: check antivirus quarantine and restore from a trusted backup if available, then repair the application or Windows image.
- After a Windows update: install newer updates, restart, and use Windows recovery options if the failure remains.
- After a failed installation: rerun the original installer as administrator if supported, or uninstall and reinstall the affected program.
- After suspected malware: run a full or offline Defender scan, then use DISM and SFC. Do not trust individual DLL replacements.
- After a system crash or storage problem: check the broader system health and back up important files before recovery work.
When to use System Restore or Windows repair reinstall
System Restore is reasonable when a suitable restore point predates the failure. It rolls back system settings and installed components, but it does not ordinarily remove personal documents.
On Windows 11, a repair reinstall is available at:
Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Follow Microsoft’s on-screen requirements and back up important work first.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If Windows repair still cannot restore normal component servicing, use supported Windows installation media or another recovery option. A clean reinstall is a last resort after application repair, DISM, SFC, malware checks, and less destructive recovery options have failed.
FAQ
Is msxactps.dll a virus?
The genuine file is a Microsoft DLL associated with MDAC and WDAC. The name alone cannot authenticate a copy. Check its digital signature and source, and scan suspicious files rather than automatically allowing them.
Is there an official standalone msxactps.dll download?
There is no current Microsoft standalone msxactps.dll package for modern Windows. WDAC is included and serviced as part of Windows. Use Windows repair tools or the original application installer.
Why does only one old program fail?
That usually points toward an incomplete or damaged application installation, an old companion component, or an architecture mismatch. Repair or reinstall that program before changing Windows files.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The file exists. Why does Windows still say it is missing?
The message may refer to a dependency, not the named DLL. It can also indicate an incompatible architecture, damaged file, blocked load, or incorrect application installation.
Should I put the DLL in System32 or SysWOW64?
Do not choose a folder based on a website’s instructions. Windows-managed OLE DB files can be stored under Common Files and component storage, and the correct location depends on Windows and application architecture.
Will registering the DLL fix the error?
Not normally. regsvr32 cannot restore a missing file or repair its dependencies. Use it only when an official installer explicitly requires registration of the correct matching copy.
What if DISM and SFC report no problems?
Repair or reinstall the specific application, verify its architecture, inspect antivirus quarantine, and identify the calling program through Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer. A clean Windows component store does not prove that the application installation is intact.
