1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesdlint8.dll is an Autodesk application file associated with the Heidi display subsystem, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the Autodesk product that owns it. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website or copy one into System32; restore the matching Autodesk installation instead.
What this file actually does
The file is identified as Heidi® Display List and is associated with Autodesk’s Heidi graphics and display subsystem. Autodesk’s historical AutoCAD 2004 Service Pack 1a documentation lists dlint8.dll among the files updated for both AutoCAD 2004 and AutoCAD LT 2004.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That makes dlint8.dll an application-side Autodesk DLL, not a normal Windows component. It should normally sit inside the Autodesk product’s installation directory alongside related Autodesk binaries and display-driver files.
The strongest official identification is for AutoCAD 2004 and AutoCAD LT 2004. Other AutoCAD-based products may use related Heidi components, but the available evidence does not establish that every Autodesk product contains this exact filename. Current AutoCAD releases may also use a different graphics architecture.

Some third-party catalog records describe the file as a 32-bit Win32 DLL and associate it with a version and file size. Those records are not Autodesk specifications, so use them only as clues when comparing a file already present in a legitimate installation. They are not a reason to obtain a copy from a DLL download site.
A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but installing 64-bit software does not replace a missing 32-bit application DLL. The relevant architecture is the Autodesk application and its installer, not simply whether Windows is 64-bit.

| The file exists beside the application but the program still will not start | Wrong build, missing adjacent files, permissions, or another dependency | Repair or reinstall rather than registering the DLL |
| Several unrelated programs fail to start | Possible Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
A different DLL appears after repairing dlint8.dll |
Multiple missing files or a broader installation problem | Perform a complete reinstall |
| The problem began after a graphics-driver change | Possible driver or compatibility issue, but not proof that the driver owns this DLL | Check Device Manager and Autodesk compatibility |
regsvr32 reports that the DLL cannot be registered |
Usually expected for an application DLL | Stop using registration commands and repair the application |
Common Windows-style messages include:
- “This application failed to start because dlint8.dll was not found.”
- “The file dlint8.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: dlint8.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “Error loading dlint8.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because dlint8.dll is missing from your computer.”
The exact wording varies by Windows version, application loader, and Autodesk product. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that dlint8.dll exists but one of its dependencies cannot be loaded.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix 1: Confirm which Autodesk program is failing
Before changing Windows components, identify the application that displays the error.
- Close the error message.
- Note the program name in the title bar.
- Right-click the shortcut you normally use and select Properties.
- Select the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field. It shows the executable and usually reveals the Autodesk installation folder.
- Select Open File Location if that button is available.
- In File Explorer, look for
dlint8.dllin the same directory as the affected Autodesk executable or in a nearby support or display-driver folder.
Do not assume that a search result anywhere on the disk belongs to the program. To search the likely installation directory:
- Open the folder shown by the shortcut.
- Select the search box in the upper-right corner.
- Enter
dlint8.dll. - If the file is present, right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the General tab for its location and the Digital Signatures tab if one is available.
A missing file points toward repair or reinstall. A file in an unexpected temporary folder, a user download folder, or a Windows system directory should not be treated as a valid replacement.
Also check whether the shortcut points to an old drive letter or an unavailable network path. If the target no longer exists, the error may be a symptom of a damaged or partially removed application rather than a single missing DLL.
Fix 2: Repair the Autodesk installation
Repair is the safest first repair because it restores missing product files without requiring you to locate an individual DLL.
For a classic Autodesk installer:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- In Programs and Features, select the affected Autodesk product.
- Select Uninstall/Change.
- Choose Repair when the Autodesk maintenance window appears.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows after the operation finishes.
- Launch the Autodesk program from its original shortcut.
On some Windows versions, you can reach the same list through Settings:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Find the Autodesk product.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
- Select Repair if available.
A successful repair should restore the missing application files and allow the program to open normally. If the repair reports that the installation source is required, insert the original Autodesk CD or connect the original network installation location when prompted.
If Repair is unavailable, fails, or finishes without changing the error, repeat the process and choose Reinstall instead. Reinstalling restores the product files and repairs installation information more comprehensively.

The installer needs to restore the correct file set, including related Autodesk libraries and configuration data.
Fix 3: Reinstall from legitimate Autodesk media
Use this step when the installation is incomplete, the original files were deleted, or Repair cannot find its source.
- Uninstall the affected Autodesk product through Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Remove only leftover folders that clearly belong to that product and that you have confirmed are no longer needed.
- Temporarily close other installers and applications.
- Start the original Autodesk installer or a legitimate Autodesk installation package.
- Install the same product edition and language that was previously licensed.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the base application before applying additional updates.
- Reapply product updates intended for that exact edition.
Newer Autodesk products use a different installation experience, and some do not provide a traditional Repair button. In those cases, uninstalling and reinstalling from the Autodesk account or original authorized installer is the normal recovery path.
If the product is very old, confirm that you still have the original media, license information, and required installation source. Avoid unofficial repacks. An old application can also have compatibility limitations on current Windows releases, and the available evidence does not establish current Windows compatibility for AutoCAD 2004.

Fix 4: Apply AutoCAD 2004 Service Pack 1a only when it matches
For AutoCAD 2004 or AutoCAD LT 2004, Service Pack 1a is a historical official update that includes dlint8.dll in its patched file list. It is not a universal standalone replacement for the DLL.
Use it only after the base product has been restored and only when all of these match:
- AutoCAD 2004 or AutoCAD LT 2004
- The correct product edition
- The correct language
- The correct locked or unlocked build
- The correct service-pack package
The official readme requires the original installation CD or network image and explains that separate service-pack executables exist. Follow the readme for the exact package, run the update, provide the original installation source if requested, and restart Windows.
Do not apply an AutoCAD LT update to AutoCAD, or an update for a different language or licensing build. A mismatched patch can leave the installation in a worse state.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →After installation, launch the application and confirm whether the missing-file message has disappeared. If another Autodesk DLL is then reported missing, the product likely has broader damage and should be reinstalled rather than patched file by file.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a legitimate old application DLL, particularly when the file is uncommon or belongs to legacy software. It can also identify a modified or replacement file that should not be restored.
To inspect Microsoft Defender history:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any entry that names
dlint8.dllor the Autodesk installation folder. - Read the detected path and action.
If the path is the legitimate Autodesk installation directory, verify that the Autodesk product was installed from trusted media. Check the file’s publisher or signature where Windows provides that information. Restore the file only when its provenance is clear and the detection is understood.
Do not blindly restore a quarantined file. Restoring it can make the file active again. Do not create a permanent antivirus exclusion merely to suppress the error. If there is any uncertainty, reinstall the Autodesk product from trusted media instead.
After restoring a verified file, update the security definitions, restart Windows, and test the program. If the file is immediately quarantined again, stop restoring it and investigate the installation source.
Fix 6: Check permissions and the application path
A valid file can still fail to load when the application cannot access its installation folder.
- Right-click the Autodesk shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Select the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program as an administrator temporarily.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the application.
If this works, the immediate problem may involve permissions or an old application’s interaction with a protected folder. It is better to correct the installation and folder permissions than to depend permanently on administrative execution.

Also inspect the installation folder:
- Right-click the folder containing the Autodesk executable.
- Select Properties.
- Select the Security tab.
- Confirm that the user account has permission to read and execute files.
- Check the General tab for a read-only or blocked file condition.
- If Windows shows an Unblock checkbox for a trusted installer file, review the file’s origin before using it.
Do not grant broad permissions to every user or copy the DLL into a globally searchable Windows directory. The file should remain with the application that installed it.

Fix 7: Use Windows integrity repair only for broader Windows problems
DISM and sfc repair Windows components and protected Windows system files. They do not normally restore an Autodesk application-private DLL, so they are secondary steps.
Use them when other unrelated Windows applications also fail, Windows features behave abnormally, or system corruption is suspected.
First run DISM:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Then run System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows and test the Autodesk application. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test again. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, repeat the process after Windows updates are installed, or investigate the component-store condition reported by DISM.
Manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan that shows reported issues, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the Autodesk product remains the definitive fix for an application-owned DLL.
Do not expect DISM or SFC to place dlint8.dll into the Autodesk folder. If Windows repair completes successfully but the Autodesk error remains, return to Autodesk Repair or Reinstall.
Fix 8: Check the graphics driver only when symptoms point there
dlint8.dll belongs to the Autodesk application, not automatically to the graphics-driver package. Reinstalling a display driver is therefore not the primary fix for this missing file.
Check the driver when the error began after a graphics update, the application also shows display corruption, or Device Manager reports a problem:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the listed graphics adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Review the Device status message under the General tab.
- Select the Driver tab and note the provider and version.
- If Windows shows a warning icon, follow the manufacturer’s supported driver recovery process.
You can also use Windows Update:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates if available.
- Install only the driver that matches the hardware.
- Restart Windows.
Do not use Device Manager to browse for a downloaded dlint8.dll. Device Manager manages hardware drivers, not application-private Autodesk files.
Finding the correct graphics driver manually can involve checking hardware models, Windows editions, and manufacturer packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can perform a free scan to identify reported driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling Autodesk when dlint8.dll itself is missing.
After a driver change, test Autodesk again. If only the DLL message remains, stop pursuing the driver and repair the Autodesk installation.
Fix 9: Do not use regsvr32 for this error
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain COM or ActiveX components. There is no public evidence that dlint8.dll is such a component.

will generally fail or provide no useful repair. A “cannot register” message does not prove that Windows registration is missing.
Do not run registration commands from a random folder, and do not copy the DLL into System32 or SysWOW64 to make the command work. Repair the Autodesk application instead.
Fix 10: Consider System Restore after a recent change
If Autodesk worked immediately before an update, cleanup operation, or installation and a restore point exists, System Restore may reverse the change.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Save open work and select Finish.
You can also open Control Panel, select Recovery, and choose Open System Restore.
System Restore can revert system files, installed programs, registry settings, and drivers. It normally does not change personal files, but review the affected-program list before proceeding.
If the error still remains
Use this escalation order:
- Confirm that the shortcut points to the intended Autodesk installation.
- Check whether
dlint8.dllis absent, quarantined, or located in the wrong folder. - Run Autodesk Repair again from the original installation source.
- Uninstall and reinstall the same product edition from legitimate media.
- If ordinary uninstall fails, use Autodesk’s documented clean-uninstall procedure carefully. A clean uninstall can remove Autodesk products, residual files, registry entries, and licensing information.
- Restart Windows and install the product fresh.
- Test from a new local administrator profile. If it works there, the original Windows profile may be damaged.
- Check disk health and available storage if files repeatedly disappear or installations fail.
- Contact Autodesk support with the product name, Windows version, exact error text, installation path, and repair log details.
If every Autodesk installation fails, the issue may involve permissions, security software, disk corruption, or compatibility with the current Windows release. If the error changes to a different missing DLL after repair, treat that as evidence of a larger incomplete installation rather than downloading each named file separately.
FAQ
Is dlint8.dll a Windows system file?
No evidence identifies it as a Windows component. It is an Autodesk application DLL associated with the Heidi display subsystem and should normally remain in the Autodesk installation directory.
Which Autodesk products use dlint8.dll?
Autodesk’s AutoCAD 2004 Service Pack 1a documentation specifically lists the file for AutoCAD 2004 and AutoCAD LT 2004. Related Autodesk products may use similar components, but do not assume this filename applies to every release.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShould I download dlint8.dll separately?
No. A downloaded DLL may have the wrong build, architecture, dependencies, or altered contents. It may also leave other damaged Autodesk files untouched. Restore the product from its official installer or original media.
Should I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Those folders are not the normal location for this application DLL. Copying it there can create conflicts and does not repair the Autodesk installation.
Will installing Visual C++ fix the problem?
Not usually as a first step. Visual C++ repair is appropriate when the error names a runtime DLL or Autodesk support identifies a runtime dependency. A missing dlint8.dll primarily points to the Autodesk installation itself.
Does 64-bit Windows require a 64-bit copy?
No. The cataloged file has been described as a 32-bit Win32 DLL, but the application and Windows architectures are separate. Use the installer that matches the Autodesk product rather than choosing a DLL based only on Windows being 64-bit.

Why does regsvr32 fail?
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair utility. dlint8.dll has not been established as a COM or ActiveX server, so registration is generally irrelevant.
Is AutoCAD 2004 Service Pack 1a a replacement download?
No. It is a historical product update that patches files in a restored AutoCAD 2004 or AutoCAD LT 2004 installation. It must match the edition, language, and build, and may require the original installation source.
