The changes took effect that day. Wizards scheduled its next announcement for October 12, 2026, which is still in the future as of October 8.

Wizards of the Coast announced these changes on August 10, 2026, and said they were effective immediately. A ban removes a card from a format; a restriction in Vintage limits a deck to one copy. Thus, The Fantasticar is not simply “banned” across all formats: its status depends on the format. Wizards’ August 10 announcement lists the format-specific actions.
Why did Wizards make the changes?
Standard
Wizards described a widening gap between the leading Standard decks and the rest of the field. Its announcement identifies Selesnya Offense as the strongest green Badgermole Cub variant and also discusses blue-red noncreature-spell decks. Those are Wizards’ stated metagame assessments, not independently established win-rate findings; the announcement does not provide a standalone percentage or win rate.
Legacy
Wizards said The Fantasticar had appeared in many different deck shells and had proven nearly impossible to address with any single series of cards. The announcement also notes the publisher’s reluctance to take preemptive action in Eternal formats, where high power is part of their appeal, while explaining why it acted in this case. Were other formats affected?
The August 10 announcement lists no changes for Pioneer, Modern, Pauper, Alchemy, Historic, Timeless, Brawl, or Competitive Brawl. The changes above apply only to the formats shown in the table.
When is the next Banned and Restricted announcement?
Wizards scheduled its next announcement for October 12, 2026. That date falls after October 8, 2026, the cutoff for the latest information here, so no October decisions are included. A separate official Pauper update also refers to October 12 as an upcoming list-update date. The August announcement names the next date; the Pauper update also references it.
