Wizards of the Coast took over management of Commander on September 30, 2024, after the format’s Rules Committee handed it to Wizards’ game design team. Wizards later formed a community advisory panel, but its designers retained final authority over decisions.

What happened to the Commander Rules Committee?

On September 30, 2024, Wizards announced that the Commander Rules Committee was giving management of the format to Wizards of the Coast’s game design team. The committee did not simply become a decision-making arm of Wizards: management changed hands, while committee members and other community figures were expected to remain involved in an advisory role.

Wizards said the preceding week had been tumultuous and that discussion had escalated to unacceptable personal threats against committee members. It also cited the scale of the work: managing Commander had become too much for five people who had other jobs and lives. The company described the arrangement as a safety and workload problem, not a change to Commander’s social purpose.

Wizards said it intended to keep Commander community-focused and social. Its early priorities included developing a shared language and a more objective way to discuss deck power levels, initially in an open beta. It also said it would evaluate the banned list with committee and community input, without making additional bans as part of that evaluation. Those were stated plans, not a guarantee about every later decision.

Who makes Commander rules now?

Wizards manages the format, and Wizards designers make the final calls. The Commander Format Panel (CFP), announced October 22, 2024, advises Wizards’ design and other teams, identifies community trends, and reviews major Commander announcements. Gavin Verhey said Wizards offered positions to everyone who had been on the Rules Committee and Commander Advisory Group, then sought additional perspectives, including players from different regions and from casual through competitive Commander.

The first panel had 17 members. Verhey said he expected the majority view of the panel to prevail most of the time, but explicitly said Wizards designers would make final decisions. The panel is therefore an important channel for community input, not an independent rules authority.

How the former and current arrangements differ

Question Former Rules Committee arrangement Wizards-managed arrangement
Who has final authority? The Rules Committee maintained Commander’s rules and ban list, according to Wizards’ archive. Wizards designers make final calls; the panel advises.
How does community input reach decisions? Through the committee’s management of the format. Through the Commander Format Panel’s advice, trend reporting, and review of major announcements.
What happens to Commander’s social identity? It was the existing community-managed format. Wizards said the format would remain community-focused and social.

The distinction matters: community participation continued, but final control did not remain with an independent committee.

How has the new process worked in practice?

Wizards’ February 9, 2026 ban announcement provides a concrete example. It said the Commander Format Panel and Wizards’ Commander Design group discussed banned-list cards and voted on possible unbans. Wizards unbanned Biorhythm and Lutri, while keeping Jeweled Lotus banned. Lutri was allowed in a deck or as a commander, but not as a companion. This illustrates panel input alongside Wizards’ management role; it does not give the panel final authority.

Wizards’ December 11, 2025 rotation update said six people left the panel, eleven remained, and Alex Heyer and Tomer Abramovici joined. That update implies a 13-member second class at that time. Panel membership is designed to rotate, so those figures should not be treated as a verified roster for October 2026.

Did Wizards take over Commander?

Yes—in the specific sense that Wizards took over management and final decision-making from the Rules Committee. The transfer was announced September 30, 2024. The committee’s role changed; the available announcements do not establish that every former committee member joined the panel permanently.

Wizards framed the move as a way to address the workload and safety burden on a small group while retaining community involvement. That describes the company’s stated intention; it does not establish that every player supported the transition or guarantee how future decisions will be made.

Is Commander still community-led?

Community members still have a formal advisory role through the Commander Format Panel, but Wizards holds final authority. “Community-focused” describes the goal Wizards said it would preserve, not a claim that the panel governs the format independently.

Players also shape their own games through Rule Zero: a pregame conversation in which a group agrees on expectations and what it wants to play. The official Commander FAQ describes the format as having no enforcement arm and explains Rule Zero as discussion and group consensus. That FAQ’s account of who sets official rules reflects the earlier Rules Committee arrangement, so Wizards’ later panel and ban announcements are the more relevant sources for current governance.

What does the change mean for Commander players?

For ordinary play, the change is mainly about who sets the official rules and ban list—not the basic structure of a Commander game. Wizards describes Commander as a casual multiplayer singleton format: each deck has 99 cards plus a commander, generally one copy of each card except basic lands; players start at 40 life, and taking 21 combat damage from one commander causes a player to lose.

Wizards also describes five optional brackets, from Exhibition through cEDH, as a way for players to discuss the experience they want from a game. In a February 9, 2026 update, it said Commander Brackets were still in beta and that it intended to be conscious of how quickly the system changed. Because beta details can change, check Wizards’ current Commander page for the latest format and bracket information.
