Warp lets you cast a card from your hand for an alternative cost, use its permanent for a short window, then—if it remains on the battlefield until the next end-step trigger exiles it—cast it later from exile for its regular cost. The cards below are useful examples for different jobs, not a universal ranking or a claim about tournament performance.
How warp works
- Cast from your hand. Pay either the card’s normal mana cost or its warp cost. Warp is an alternative cost, not a separate spell type.
- Follow normal casting rules. Paying warp still means you cast a spell, so opponents may respond. A permanent spell can usually be cast only during a main phase when the stack is empty, unless another effect changes that permission.
- Use its first battlefield window. If the spell resolves as a permanent, it enters the battlefield and its abilities can matter as usual.
- Check the next end step. At the beginning of the next end step, a delayed ability tries to exile the permanent. It does so only if the permanent is still on the battlefield when that ability resolves.
- Cast it again later, if you choose. After it is exiled this way, its owner may cast it from exile on a later turn, paying its regular cost. Warp is available only when casting from hand.
These are the core distinctions in Wizards of the Coast’s Edge of Eternities Mechanics and release notes.
What happens if the permanent leaves first?
If the warped permanent leaves the battlefield before the delayed exile ability resolves, that ability will not exile it from its new zone. The special permission to cast the card from exile applies to the card exiled by warp; moving it to exile some other way does not automatically grant that permission. The release notes clarify how warp interacts with zone changes.
Does paying warp change mana value?
No. A card’s mana value is based on its mana cost, not the alternative cost paid to cast it. Starfield Shepherd has mana value 5 even when you pay its warp cost. That distinction matters when another effect checks mana value: paying less to cast a card does not make the card’s mana value lower.

How to get value from a warped card
Think of warp as a paid-for early appearance, with a possible second appearance later at the normal cost. Choose the first cast for what it can accomplish before the delayed exile: an enters-the-battlefield ability can produce an immediate effect, while a static or combat ability can contribute during the short window. Treat the later cast as a separate spell decision; its regular cost, normal timing permissions, and the board state on that later turn all matter.
- Do not treat warp as free: you pay an alternative cost for the first cast.
- Do not treat it as a blink effect: the permanent is exiled at the next end step only if it is still there when the delayed ability resolves.
- Do not expect a discounted second cast: the later cast from exile uses the regular cost, not warp.
Warp cards to consider by role
These Edge of Eternities cards illustrate different ways to use the first battlefield window. Their abilities and warp costs make them examples for deck-building decisions, not a best-to-worst list; the official set materials do not establish current format results or a universal ranking.

| Card | Useful role | What the first window offers | Planning point |
|---|---|---|---|
| All-Fates Stalker | Interaction | Its enters ability can exile up to one target non-Assassin creature until All-Fates Stalker leaves the battlefield. | If the Stalker is warped and later exiled by its delayed ability, the affected creature returns when the Stalker leaves, provided the ability resolved and remains in effect. The official release notes also clarify that if the Stalker leaves before its enters ability resolves, the target is not exiled. |
| Starbreach Whale | Card selection and graveyard setup | This 3/5 flyer surveils two when it enters. | The surveil happens on the initial appearance, before the delayed exile. Consider whether that selection is useful now and whether the later regular-cost cast is worth planning for. |
| Starfield Shepherd | Tutoring | This 3/2 flyer searches for a basic Plains or a creature card with mana value 1 or less when it enters. | Its mana value remains 5 even when you cast it for warp, so do not confuse the cost paid with the value another effect sees. |
| Exalted Sunborn | Token synergy | It has flying and lifelink, and doubles the tokens its controller would create. | Warp can establish that token-doubling effect for a shorter window. It is most relevant when token creation during that window matters. |
| Memorial Team Leader | Combat | During your turn, it gives your other creatures +1/+0. | Its static bonus can matter in the turn it arrives; an immediate enters ability is not the only way to use the short window. |
Compare a warp card by what it does before the end-step trigger, whether that value is immediate or depends on another event, the gap between its warp and regular costs, and whether a later regular-cost cast fits your deck and board. The cards above are instructional examples drawn from the official mechanics article and release notes; those sources do not provide tournament-performance evaluations.
