Manifest dread lets you look at the top two cards of your library, put one onto the battlefield face down as a 2/2 creature, and put the other into your graveyard. The face-down creature can attack and block immediately, but you can reveal and turn it face up only if the card underneath is a creature—usually by paying that creature card’s mana cost. Wizards of the Coast introduced the mechanic in Duskmourn: House of Horror, where it anchors the blue-green Limited archetype.
How manifest dread works
When an effect instructs you to manifest dread, look at the top two cards of your library. Choose one to manifest face down on the battlefield and put the other into your graveyard. You make the choice after seeing both cards, so the effect offers both a creature body and a small selection decision. The official Duskmourn mechanics overview describes the mechanic and its face-down creature.
The manifested permanent is a colorless 2/2 creature with no name, creature types, abilities, or mana cost. Its mana value is 0. Until it is turned face up, it functions as that 2/2 rather than as the card hidden underneath: it can attack, block, be targeted by effects that target creatures, and be sacrificed like another creature.
How to turn a manifested creature face up
If the card underneath is a creature card, you may reveal it and pay its mana cost to turn the manifested creature face up. This is a special action: it does not use the stack, so an opponent cannot respond to the reveal-and-pay action itself. You may take it any time you have priority.

- Includes a mix of AT LEAST 25 Rares/Uncommons which is half of the cards.
- Absolutely NO... Basic lands, Foreign, or silver/gold bordered cards.
- Some may contain Foils or Mythics but not all.
- Sets can range from Beta to the current Magic the Gathering set.
- Mint/Excellent condition only.
If the hidden creature has morph or disguise, you may instead use the applicable morph or disguise cost. A manifested creature can also be turned face up by the normal manifest procedure after it loses its abilities, provided the card underneath is still a creature card.
What happens when the hidden card is not a creature?
Manifest dread can put a noncreature card face down. It is still a 2/2 creature while face down, but the ordinary manifest procedure cannot turn it face up; that procedure requires a creature card underneath. A manifested double-faced card also cannot transform while face down. If its front face is a creature card, you can turn it face up by paying the front face’s mana cost.

How to evaluate manifest dread cards
Assess the effect as more than a way to make a 2/2: it selects between two cards, sends one to the graveyard, and may give you a creature worth paying to reveal later. These are useful questions when considering a card with manifest dread:
- How often does it manifest? Repeated opportunities make the selection and body more relevant over the course of a game.
- Do the two cards create a meaningful choice? The effect is more flexible when either card could be the better one to keep on the battlefield.
- Does your deck benefit from the graveyard? The unchosen card always goes there when available, which can matter to a deck that uses its graveyard.
- Can you afford a face-up cost? A hidden creature is only a future option if you can spare the mana to reveal it.
- Is the creature worth that cost? Compare the benefit of turning it face up with keeping the 2/2 on the battlefield and using your mana elsewhere.
These are evaluation criteria based on how the mechanic works, not a tournament-tested card ranking. Wizards’ Duskmourn Prerelease and Draft Guide identifies blue-green as the set’s manifest dread Limited archetype. That is useful context for drafting or building a sealed-deck pool, but it does not establish which cards are best in Standard, Commander, or another constructed format.

Library-size edge cases
If you have only one card in your library, manifest dread puts that card onto the battlefield face down; there is no second card to put into the graveyard. If you have no cards in your library, no card is manifested. An ability that triggers whenever a player manifests dread can still trigger even if some or all of the instructed actions were impossible. The Comprehensive Rules define the process and specify when such a trigger occurs.

Manifest dread is a mechanic from Duskmourn: House of Horror. In a design retrospective, Wizards of the Coast explained the set’s suspense goal: “We wanted playing of Duskmourn to be more suspenseful than the average game of Magic.” Read the statement in Top of the Duskmourning, Part 2.
