The right plan depends on which militia you want to field: footmen need sidearms and small shields, spear militia need spears and large shields, polearm militia need polearms, and archers need warbows. Armor is a separate, optional layer that increases protection.
The official wiki describes the game as Early Access and cautions that its information may change. What weapons do militia need in Manor Lords?
Militia equipment depends on the formation you recruit. The official Warfare page describes a militia formation as intended to contain 36 men, but it may be smaller if the required weapons are unavailable. Plan production around the unit type rather than making a little of every weapon.
| Militia type | Required equipment | Role described by the wiki |
|---|---|---|
| Footmen | Sidearms and small shields | Melee; the wiki’s combat table includes a shield value. |
| Spear militia | Spears and large shields | Melee; the table marks its attack as impaling. |
| Polearm militia | Polearms | Melee; the table lists charge and anti-armor values. |
| Archer militia | Warbows | Ranged. |
These are equipment requirements, not a universal ranking of which unit is best. Tactical strengths differ, and the wiki’s combat values can change between builds. Compare the current in-game figures for the qualities that matter to your plan—such as range, shields, charge, and anti-armor—rather than relying on an old numerical ranking. Warfare

Where do you make weapons and shields?
Armaments are produced through burgage-plot backyard workshop extensions. Each item has its own workshop and input requirements; these are not interchangeable recipes. The official Military Items page lists the following production routes and prerequisites:
| In-game item | Workshop extension | Inputs or unlocks listed by the wiki |
|---|---|---|
| Crossbows | Bowyer’s Workshop | Planks and Iron Parts |
| Gambesons | Tailor’s Workshop | Linen |
| Helmets | Armorer’s Workshop | Iron Slabs; Basic Armormaking development |
| Large Shields | Joiner’s Workshop | Planks |
| Mail Armor | Armorer’s Workshop | Iron Slabs; Basic and Advanced Armormaking developments |
| Plate armor | Armorer’s Workshop | Iron Slabs |
| Polearms | Blacksmith’s Workshop | Planks and Iron Slabs |
| Sidearms | Blacksmith’s Workshop | Iron Slabs |
| Small Shields | Joiner’s Workshop | Planks |
| Spears | Blacksmith’s Workshop | Planks and Iron Slabs |
| Warbows | Bowyer’s Workshop | Planks |
Use the table to match a planned formation to its production chain. For example, spear militia require both a blacksmith-made weapon and joiner-made shields, while polearm militia need the blacksmith’s polearms. The wiki’s listed recipes may not match every later game build. Military Items

How does militia armor work?
Helmets and body armor are optional for forming a militia unit, but increase its armor. Availability and burgage level affect what soldiers try to equip: the Warfare page says soldiers try to take a helmet when one is available; soldiers from level 2 burgage plots try to equip gambesons if available, while those from level 3 plots request mail armor instead. This means access to an armor recipe alone does not establish that every militia member will wear the same protection.
For the listed production inputs, helmets and mail armor are made at an Armorer’s Workshop from Iron Slabs, with Basic Armormaking required for helmets and both Basic and Advanced Armormaking for mail. Gambesons are made at a Tailor’s Workshop from Linen. The Military Items page lists plate armor at the Armorer’s Workshop using Iron Slabs. Military Items · Warfare

How are retinue and mercenaries different from militia?
Militia are formed from male villagers and depend on the relevant militia equipment. Retinue and mercenaries are separate unit types, with different recruitment and equipment rules.
- Retinue: A professional force created when you construct your first Manor. The wiki says its armor can be upgraded individually and that its overall stats vary somewhat with weapon distribution. Do not treat militia crafting requirements as retinue customization rules.
- Mercenaries: Hired troops paid monthly with Treasury; they leave if disbanded.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why might a recipe or combat value differ in your build?
Manor Lords is in Early Access, and official wiki pages warn that information may be incomplete or subject to change. Steam’s announcements page includes updates through 0.8.104 and beta notes through 0.8.110; an older 0.8.004 announcement introduced crossbows craftable at the Bowyer’s Workshop and usable by militia and the Huntsmen mercenary unit. That history is not proof that every recipe or combat value remained unchanged afterward.
