Wizards of the Coast set the tabletop release for August 14, 2026, with a release on MTG Arena also announced.
What did Wizards actually tease?
Wizards announced a separate The Hobbit set, returning to Middle-earth, the shared setting of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The two books tell different stories, so a Middle-earth crossover does not automatically mean a new set based on the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Wizards’ vision-design article describes the set as an adaptation of The Hobbit.
That distinction also explains why the earlier The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set did not use Hobbit material. In a design commentary, Wizards says the team left that material aside in case it could return to Middle-earth for another set.
When is The Hobbit set coming out?
The global tabletop release date is August 14, 2026. Wizards’ 2026 lineup announcement also lists the set for MTG Arena. The design article says tabletop products would be available through local game stores, TCGplayer, Amazon, and other Magic retailers. That confirms named retail channels, not live inventory, current prices, or any retailer’s affiliate terms.

How does the set differ from Tales of Middle-earth?
Wizards describes The Hobbit as a smaller adaptation than its Lord of the Rings set: the source novel is one book rather than a trilogy. The design article characterizes The Hobbit as one fifth of the word count of the Lord of the Rings novels; that is the publisher’s comparison, not an independently measured count. Its shorter source story informed a more focused draft structure built around five armies and five two-color archetypes.
| Army | Two-color draft theme | Associated mechanic |
|---|---|---|
| Humans | Recruit | Recruit |
| Goblins | Amass | Amass Goblins |
| Wolves | Ferocious | Ferocious |
| Dwarves | Storied | Storied |
| Elves | Landfall | Landfall |
The mechanics are not all new. Wizards says the set also brings back Sagas, Adventure, and Treasure. One notable change from the earlier Middle-earth set is the amass subtype: Tales of Middle-earth used amass Orcs, while The Hobbit uses amass Goblins. The vision-design article and Making Magic article discuss the set’s structure and mechanics.

Why return to Middle-earth with The Hobbit?
Wizards’ head designer Mark Rosewater framed the earlier set as a successful introduction for Middle-earth fans, writing: “The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth proved to be an amazing set that brought in new players, ones who are huge fans of Middle-earth.” That is Rosewater’s assessment in his design article, not a published audience-size or sales statistic. With Hobbit material deliberately held back, Wizards could build a distinct follow-up around the book’s own characters, armies, and story.
