MTP USB Device Driver: Fix an Android Phone That Charges but Does Not Appear in Windows

Windows normally handles MTP through its built-in Windows Portable Devices driver. Follow these steps when an Android phone charges but does not appear in File Explorer.

MTP USB Device is usually not a driver you download from a random website. Windows normally handles Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) through its built-in Windows Portable Devices (WPD) class-driver framework. If an Android phone charges but is missing from File Explorer, first use a USB cable that carries data, unlock the phone, and choose File transfer in the phone’s USB notification. Then inspect Device Manager and reinstall or update the standard WPD driver only if Windows has not identified the device.

A separate manufacturer driver is mainly needed for a custom protocol or Android development/debugging. The instructions below cover the complete manual process for Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, including the historical Windows 10 driver incident that affected some phones.

What the MTP USB Device driver does

Media Transfer Protocol lets Windows browse and copy files on portable devices such as Android phones, media players and cameras without exposing the phone’s storage as a traditional disk volume. Microsoft places MTP inside the Windows Portable Devices (WPD) infrastructure. WPD also supports Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP), USB Mass Storage Class and MTP over USB, IP and Bluetooth.

On a normal USB connection, “MTP USB Device” is therefore a class-driver entry rather than one universal third-party package. Microsoft’s standard setup-information file is WpdMtp.inf. For USB-connected MTP devices on Windows 7 and later, WinUsb.sys is used as the lower filter driver instead of the older WpdUsb.sys. A phone that follows the MTP class protocol can generally work with this Microsoft-supplied driver without an OEM download.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

A vendor driver can still be legitimate when a device uses a non-class or custom protocol, or when you need a development connection that requires a specific OEM package. That is different from ordinary copying of photos, videos and documents.

Why a phone can charge but not appear in File Explorer

  • Charge-only USB mode: many phones default to charging until you select File transfer.
  • Charge-only cable: a cable can deliver power while lacking the data wires needed for enumeration.
  • Locked screen: some phones do not expose storage until the device is unlocked and USB access is approved.
  • Unidentified Windows device: Windows may list the phone under Other devices with a warning icon instead of Portable Devices.
  • Driver or update conflict: a damaged class-driver installation, a failed Windows update or a device-specific protocol can stop enumeration.
  • Port or hub problems: a loose connector, defective port or unpowered hub can interrupt the USB handshake before the driver is involved.

These causes look similar in File Explorer, so check the physical connection and the phone’s USB mode before changing Windows drivers.

Check the cable, phone and USB mode first

  1. Disconnect the phone and inspect both connectors for dirt, bent contacts or looseness.
  2. Reconnect it directly to a USB port on the computer, bypassing a hub or dock for the first test.
  3. Use a known-good USB data cable for file transfer. A cable supplied only for charging will not work even if the battery icon appears.
  4. Unlock the phone. Swipe down to open its USB notification; wording differs by Android version and manufacturer.
  5. Select File transfer (sometimes labelled “Transferring files” or “MTP”). Do not leave it on “Charging only.”
  6. Wait several seconds, then open File Explorer and look under This PC. The phone normally appears as a portable device rather than as a drive letter.

If no USB notification appears, try another data cable and another physical port before reinstalling anything. Test the phone on a second Windows computer if one is available; this separates a phone-side or cable fault from a problem on the original PC.

  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Find the phone in Device Manager

Device Manager shows whether Windows has created a device entry, even when File Explorer has not.

  1. Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
  2. Expand Portable Devices. A working MTP phone may be listed by its model name or as an MTP-related entry.
  3. Also expand Other devices. An entry with a yellow warning icon often means Windows detected the hardware but lacks a usable driver.
  4. Check Universal Serial Bus controllers for an “Unknown USB Device” entry if the phone is not shown in either of the first two categories.
  5. With the phone connected and set to File transfer, note whether an entry appears, disappears when you unplug it, or remains unchanged. That observation identifies whether enumeration is occurring.

Android’s official Windows development guidance uses Portable Devices and Other devices as the primary locations for OEM USB-driver installation. For ordinary file transfer, however, the built-in WPD class driver is the correct baseline.

Reinstall or select the standard MTP driver

Use this procedure when the phone is visible in Device Manager but has a warning icon, an error status or a stale entry.

  1. Keep the phone unlocked and in File transfer mode.
  2. In Device Manager, right-click the phone or MTP entry and choose Uninstall device. If Windows offers a checkbox to remove driver software, select it only when the entry is clearly the failed device; do not remove unrelated USB controllers.
  3. Unplug the phone, restart Windows, and reconnect it directly to the PC.
  4. Open Device Manager again. Choose Action > Scan for hardware changes.
  5. If Windows does not select a driver automatically, right-click the unidentified phone and choose Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers > Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
  6. Choose the Windows Portable Devices or MTP-compatible class-driver option offered by your Windows edition, accept the installation and restart if requested.
  7. Return the phone to File transfer mode and check File Explorer.

Do not edit WpdMtp.inf manually. Microsoft’s vendor guidance says a manufacturer with unique requirements should base a custom INF on the original rather than modifying the system file directly.

When an OEM Android USB driver is appropriate

For photos and documents, a standard MTP phone normally needs no separate vendor download. Consider the device maker’s official support page only when one of these conditions applies:

  • The manufacturer states that the model uses a custom WPD protocol.
  • Device Manager shows a persistent unknown device after the cable and USB-mode checks.
  • You are setting up Android development or debugging and the development documentation specifically requires an OEM USB driver.
  • The phone’s support instructions identify a driver package for your exact Windows edition and model.

Download only from the manufacturer’s official support or developer site. Match the package to Windows 11, 10, 8 or 7 as stated by that vendor, and avoid generic “driver updater” downloads that do not identify the source or device model. Installing a development driver will not correct a charge-only cable or a phone left in Charging only mode.

Check Windows for a device or update problem

Review the device status

In Device Manager, open the phone’s Properties and read the Device status message on the General tab. An error code can indicate whether Windows failed to start the device, could not find a driver or lost the USB connection. Record the exact code before uninstalling the entry; it is useful when consulting the phone maker’s support documentation.

Install normal Windows updates

Open Settings > Windows Update (or Update & Security > Windows Update on older Windows 10 builds), select Check for updates, install applicable updates and restart. Do not assume that every optional driver offered there is required for MTP; keep the standard class driver unless your device maker documents otherwise.

Understand the Windows 10 version 1607 incident

Microsoft documented a specific Windows 10 version 1607 compatibility problem involving an incorrect third-party WPD driver identified as “Microsoft – WPD – 2/22/2016 12:00:00 AM – 5.2.5326.4762.” The driver prevented some USB-connected phones and media devices from connecting. Microsoft’s KB4017100 update removed that driver. This was a historical incident for that release, not a universal repair recipe for current Windows versions. If you maintain an old 1607 installation and recognize that exact driver, follow Microsoft’s documented remediation rather than deleting random WPD files.

  • 【Press Down Firmly Every 30 Minutes】Use your palm or fingers to press the phone down firmly and check it's secure before letting go. Apply even pressure for a few seconds to allow the suction cup to adhere properly. To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.

Use a different USB path to isolate the fault

  • Another port: test a rear motherboard port on a desktop or a different side of a laptop. Avoid front-panel ports and hubs during diagnosis.
  • Another cable: use a short, known-good data cable that matches the phone’s connector.
  • Another computer: if the phone works elsewhere, focus on the original Windows installation, its USB ports or its driver state.
  • Another phone: connecting a second MTP phone to the same PC shows whether the computer can handle the protocol at all.
  • PTP as a test: some Android phones offer “Photo transfer (PTP)” in the USB menu. It is not a replacement for MTP, but if PTP works while MTP does not, the physical link is probably functional and the issue is more likely protocol or driver specific.

Wireless transfer when USB MTP remains unavailable

Microsoft documents Phone Link and Link to Windows as wireless transfer options for supported configurations. The current requirements listed for the described feature include Windows 10 with the May 2019 update or later, Android 10 or later and minimum versions of the associated apps. Availability and supported functions vary by phone, Windows edition and app version, so verify compatibility in Microsoft’s current Phone Link documentation. Wireless transfer does not repair the USB driver; it is a workaround when you need to move files while investigating the cable or driver.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Installing a driver labeled “MTP” from an unverified download site before checking the phone’s USB mode.
  • Assuming that a visible charging symbol proves that the cable carries data.
  • Removing every USB controller in Device Manager instead of uninstalling only the affected phone entry.
  • Using an Android development/OEM package for a model or Windows edition it does not support.
  • Editing or replacing WpdMtp.inf directly.
  • Treating the old Windows 10 version 1607 incident as proof that every MTP failure is caused by the same driver.

After each change, reconnect with the phone unlocked and explicitly set to File transfer. If Device Manager never changes when you plug in the phone, concentrate on the cable, connector, port or phone hardware rather than repeatedly reinstalling the class driver.

As an optional shortcut, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, show the current and recommended driver versions, install official drivers, and provide driver backup, restore and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and includes a 2-day free trial with no credit card before a subscription; results vary, and it cannot repair every connection problem, so the cable and USB-mode checks still matter.
