To get started, extract a documented build into its own folder and run mugen.exe; then add fighters and stages by editing the engine’s configuration. Playing with downloaded content is a lighter first step than creating a fighter from scratch.
What M.U.G.E.N is—and what you need to get started
Elecbyte describes M.U.G.E.N as an engine for assembling and customizing 2D fighting games. You can combine characters, stages and visual themes called motifs. The documented files include chars/ for character content, data/select.def for roster and stage configuration, and data/mugen.cfg for settings. See Elecbyte’s M.U.G.E.N overview for version 1.1 Beta 1.
The documentation available for this guide describes M.U.G.E.N 1.1 Beta 1 and is dated; it does not establish whether Elecbyte currently offers a download, whether newer builds exist, or which operating systems are supported. Treat the steps below as guidance for the documented build, not confirmation that it is currently supported. Obtain the engine from a source you can assess, and check that downloaded content is compatible with the build you have.
Choose your first route: play or create
| Route | What you do | What it involves |
|---|---|---|
| Play with downloaded content | Add existing characters or stages and configure the roster. | Extracting files and editing configuration text; Elecbyte says basic file extraction and text editing are enough to play downloaded content. Source: Elecbyte overview. |
| Create original content | Build a fighter or other game content for the engine. | Learning the relevant sprites, palettes, animations and, for more advanced fighter behavior, attack logic. The first official tutorial requires image-editing software for its palette, sprite and simple-animation exercise. Source: Elecbyte Tutorial 1, updated 17 September 2009. |
Programming experience can help with authoring, but it is not presented as a prerequisite for trying downloaded content. Elecbyte says M.U.G.E.N is free for non-commercial use and directs readers to the README for the full license; that statement is not a complete summary of the license.

Run the engine before adding anything
- Download a build from a source you can assess, then extract its archive into a new, dedicated folder.
- Open that folder and double-click
mugen.exe. Elecbyte’s overview gives this as the documented quick start: “After downloading M.U.G.E.N, unzip it into a new folder and double-click mugen.exe to run.” - Launch the base engine before installing add-ons. This gives you a useful baseline: if it does not start, address the engine or extraction first rather than troubleshooting a character or stage at the same time.
The last step is a practical troubleshooting approach, not a documented diagnostic guarantee. The exact executable and folder layout may differ in builds other than the one covered by Elecbyte’s documentation.
Add a character through data/select.def
- Place or extract the character files under the engine’s
chars/directory, keeping the folder structure supplied with the character. - Open
data/select.defin a text editor. Find the character entries and add the character using its actual folder or definition-file name, following the file’s existing format. - Save the file and launch the engine to check whether the character appears. Add one character at a time so a path or configuration error is easier to isolate.
Use the names and paths that exist in the downloaded files; do not assume every add-on uses the same folder name. Elecbyte identifies chars/ and data/select.def as starting points in its overview.

Add a stage and, if needed, music
Stages are configured in data/select.def too. Use the stage’s actual .def path, and follow the syntax already present in the file. The sample configuration shows character entries as well as a character entry paired with a stage and music; consult the select.def example for a concrete reference. That example is a repository mirror, not a guarantee that every third-party add-on follows the same structure.
Choose and check third-party content
- Check version compatibility. Compare the add-on’s stated requirements with the engine build you are using. Compatibility is not universal or guaranteed.
- Preserve the supplied structure. Verify the character folder or stage
.deffile exists at the path you enter inselect.def. - Prefer a source you can evaluate. The MUGEN Guild FAQ suggests looking for a character download on the creator homepage linked from the relevant page. This is community guidance; confirm the link and download are still available.
Because add-ons come from different creators, a file that is named or arranged differently from an example may need its own instructions. Start with one item and check the paths before adding more.

If you want to make a fighter
Use Elecbyte’s tutorials as a learning sequence rather than treating character creation as a single setup step. Tutorial 1 starts with palettes, sprites and a simple animation, and says image-editing software is needed for that task. Later work involves learning the engine’s formats and implementing behavior such as attacks. The overview says programming experience gives an author a head start, while basic extraction and text editing are enough to play downloaded content.
