Multiplayer modes define how people share a game: they might cooperate against the game, compete against one another, take turns, or face both enemies and other players. There is no universal list or ruleset—each game sets its own objectives, team sizes and available playlists. To choose a mode, look beyond its name and check what players actually do to win.
What do multiplayer mode labels mean?
The labels describe different parts of a game’s structure, so they can overlap. Co-op and PvP identify how players relate to one another; PvE and PvEvP identify the opposition; turn-based describes pacing; and battle royale or objective control describes a goal or match format.

What is the difference between co-op and PvP?
Co-op: work toward a shared result
In co-op, players cooperate rather than fight each other. Epic’s Fortnite glossary describes co-op as gameplay that can progress through two or more players working together. The challenge may come from enemies, puzzles, exploration or other tasks set by the game. Unity gives collaborative puzzles, group exploration and co-op platformers as examples of casual co-op.

Unity summarizes the appeal this way: “Casual co-op games center friendly teamwork and communication.” That does not mean every co-op game requires voice chat; the amount of coordination depends on its mechanics and objectives.

PvP: compete against other people
PvP means player versus player: the opposing side is made up of human players. It can be a one-on-one fight, a team contest, an elimination match or a contest over map objectives. Competitive real-time games often exchange player actions and game-state information continuously; turn-based competitive games instead let players affect the state in turns.
How do PvE and PvEvP differ?
In PvE, players face opponents or obstacles controlled by the game rather than other players. A PvE activity may still be multiplayer if people join forces against those challenges. The key question is who supplies the opposition, not whether the activity is online.
PvEvP combines player-versus-environment challenges with the possibility of player-versus-player conflict. Ubisoft’s The Division 2 illustrates the distinction within one game: it offers co-op missions and PvP, while its Dark Zones mix environmental play with player conflict. Check a game’s rules to see whether other players are automatically hostile, can choose to engage, or become a threat only under particular conditions.

What is a battle royale mode?
A battle royale match aims to leave one player or one team standing. Epic’s Fortnite glossary defines the format as “An online multiplayer game mode that plays to a last-person or last-team standing for the win.” Its Battle Royale page describes Fortnite’s version as combining survival, exploration and scavenging, with solo and small-squad play.
Player counts are game-specific, not a standard built into the label. Epic’s Fortnite documentation describes squads of two to four players. KRAFTON/PUBG Studios’ PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS overview gives a 100-player example involving landing, looting and survival on a shrinking battleground. Those figures describe those games’ examples, not every battle royale.

Rather than making the last survivor the winner, objective modes ask players or teams to complete a map goal. That may mean capturing or holding locations, escorting an object or completing another task; exact rules vary by game.

For a current illustration, EA’s Battlefield 6 modes page, dated October 10, 2025, describes Conquest as a contest in which two teams capture and hold multiple control points. The example shows why a mode name alone is not enough: check the specific game’s explanation for its objectives, team structure and win condition.
How should you choose a multiplayer mode?
Start with the kind of session you want, then confirm the rules for the particular game. These checks help avoid assuming that a familiar label means familiar details.
