The concept aimed to combine gaming-monitor features with a living-room-sized screen and TV-style entertainment functions. Those were announcement-era specifications and company claims, not independent test results or proof of current availability.
What was an NVIDIA BFGD?
BFGD stood for Big Format Gaming Display. NVIDIA announced the category on January 7, 2018, working with Acer, ASUS and HP. The idea was to bring high-refresh PC gaming and G-SYNC variable refresh to a screen large enough for a living room, while also incorporating SHIELD’s streaming platform. NVIDIA’s GeForce News announcement and its newsroom release describe the product concept.

NVIDIA’s announced BFGD specification was a 65-inch, 4K display running at 120Hz, with G-SYNC, HDR and a stated peak brightness of 1,000 nits. NVIDIA also described a full-array direct backlight, Quantum Dot Enhancement Film and DCI-P3 color gamut. These are specifications and claims from the 2018 announcement; they should not be read as independently verified performance measurements or as a guarantee that every final partner model was identical.
What did “onboard SHIELD TV” mean?
SHIELD was integrated into the display rather than requiring a separate SHIELD TV box. NVIDIA described the software platform as Android TV-based and said the display would include a SHIELD remote and game controller. The company named Netflix, Amazon Video, YouTube and Hulu, and highlighted Google Assistant voice control. Its GeForce News article also listed Plex, Kodi, Android games, GameStream and GeForce NOW. These were services and features cited in 2018; availability can vary by region and may change over time.

That integration made BFGD more than a large desktop monitor. NVIDIA’s pitch paired PC gaming with streaming and other entertainment features on the same screen. It was a hybrid monitor-and-TV proposition, although the announcement alone does not establish how the experience compared with a separate gaming monitor and streaming device.
How did the partner displays differ?
The original BFGD announcement described a product category; partner announcements and later model documentation provide details for particular displays. The specifications below come from the companies’ own materials, not comparative independent testing.

| ASUS ROG Swift PG65 | ASUS announced a 65-inch 4K UHD HDR BFGD with G-SYNC, 120Hz refresh, low latency and integrated SHIELD. ASUS’s CES 2018 announcement said the display would be shown at CES. | The announcement does not establish a price or retail stock. |
| HP OMEN X 65 | HP announced a 65-inch 4K display with HDR10, an ultra-low-latency mode, variable refresh up to 120Hz, stated peak luminance of 1,000 nits, G-SYNC and SHIELD. HP’s CES 2018 release gives the announced features. | HP planned availability for Fall 2018 and said pricing would be disclosed nearer availability. That was a forecast, not confirmation of a launch date or current stock. |
| HP OMEN X Emperium 65 | HP’s datasheet lists a 64.5-inch diagonal, 3840×2160 resolution, refresh rates up to 144Hz, G-SYNC HDR, integrated SHIELD and an OMEN X Emperium Soundbar rated at 120 watts. The HP datasheet documents these model specifications. | The later product documentation establishes a concrete BFGD-category product, but not whether the original 2018 forecast was met on schedule or whether the model is currently available. |
| ASUS ROG Swift PG65UQ | ASUS later announced availability of this 65-inch 4K HDR BFGD with an overclockable 144Hz refresh rate. ASUS’s product update concerns this later model. | The announcement is not evidence of current inventory or pricing. |
The 144Hz figures belong to those later, specific model announcements or documents; they do not replace NVIDIA’s original 120Hz category specification.

What did the 2018 launch plans actually promise?
NVIDIA’s January 7, 2018 release said general availability was expected “this summer,” meaning summer 2018, with price and further specifications still to come. HP’s January 8 CES release separately planned Fall 2018 availability for the OMEN X 65. These were different company expectations for the announcement period, not a single confirmed launch date. The later HP datasheet and ASUS PG65UQ update show that specific BFGD products were documented or announced afterward, but do not establish present-day retail availability.

What was the case for a giant gaming display?
NVIDIA framed BFGDs as a way to get a large-screen experience without giving up features associated with PC gaming monitors, particularly high refresh rates and G-SYNC. In the company’s January 7 release, then-GeForce marketing head Matt Wuebbling said, “BFGDs change that,” describing the goal as letting PC gamers experience games with low latency. That is NVIDIA’s promotional framing, not an independent finding about measured latency.
HP similarly presented the OMEN X 65 as serving both console and PC play. In HP’s January 8, 2018 announcement, OMEN Displays Product Manager Pete Ellis said, “With the OMEN X 65 we have a display that can do both”; the preceding context described a large 4K screen for console gaming and a variable-refresh-rate monitor for PC gaming. That quote explains HP’s positioning, not a comparative test result.

What should you check when comparing a BFGD with a TV or monitor?
The 2018 announcements establish what the companies said their products would offer, but they do not provide comparable independent measurements of image quality or latency across models, nor current prices. For a real buying decision, verify the specific unit and current listing, then compare the features that determine whether it fits your room and games:
