A MUX switch controls which graphics processor drives a gaming laptop’s built-in screen. In hybrid mode, the integrated GPU (iGPU) usually drives the display while the dedicated GPU (dGPU) renders demanding games. In dGPU-only mode, the display is connected directly to the dedicated GPU, which can improve gaming performance and reduce display latency—but uses more power and may require a restart.

What does a MUX switch do?

MUX is short for multiplexer. In a gaming laptop, it is a hardware display-routing component that selects whether the internal screen receives output from the processor’s integrated GPU or from the more powerful dedicated GPU, such as an NVIDIA GeForce RTX or AMD Radeon GPU.

In a conventional hybrid-graphics design, the dedicated GPU can still render a game. The completed frames are then passed through the iGPU, which drives the laptop panel. NVIDIA describes this type of Optimus arrangement as using the integrated GPU for display output while activating the GeForce GPU for demanding applications.

A MUX switch provides another route: the dGPU can drive the laptop screen directly. This removes the extra display-output step through the iGPU. The feature is explained in NVIDIA’s overview of Optimus and Advanced Optimus.

Hybrid mode versus dGPU-only mode

Mode Display path Best for Trade-off
Hybrid, Optimus or MSHybrid The iGPU normally drives the display; the dGPU renders demanding workloads Everyday use, battery life and quieter operation Can add display-path latency and reduce performance in some games
Discrete GPU, dGPU Only or NVIDIA GPU Only The dGPU drives the display directly Maximum gaming performance and lowest possible display latency Higher power use, heat and fan noise; shorter battery life
iGPU Only or Eco The integrated GPU drives the display and the dGPU is disabled Battery-powered productivity Much lower graphics performance

The names differ by manufacturer. ASUS, for example, generally uses Ultimate for direct-dGPU operation, Standard for MSHybrid, Eco for disabling the dGPU and Optimized for automatically using Eco on battery and Standard on AC power. The available modes depend on the exact model. ASUS documents these GPU modes here.

Is a MUX switch a physical switch?

The display multiplexer itself is hardware, but users normally control it through the laptop’s software, firmware or BIOS rather than with a physical button. A manufacturer may label the setting GPU Mode, GPU Switch, Discrete GPU Mode, Ultimate or NVIDIA GPU Only.

Some implementations require a restart after changing modes. Others use NVIDIA Advanced Optimus, a hardware-based dynamic display switch that can move between iGPU and dGPU display paths automatically on supported systems without the traditional manual-reboot process.

“This laptop has a MUX switch” and “this laptop supports Advanced Optimus” are therefore related but not identical claims. Support depends on the laptop configuration, display panel, firmware, GPU, drivers and internal port wiring.

How to enable a MUX switch

The exact menu varies by brand and model. If the option is missing, the laptop may not support a MUX switch or Advanced Optimus.

ASUS ROG and TUF

In current Armoury Crate versions, the setting is generally part of GPU Mode:

Armoury Crate → Devices → select your laptop → GPU Performance → GPU Mode

On supported systems it may also be available at:

Armoury Crate → Home → GPU Mode

Choose Ultimate for direct-dGPU operation, Standard for MSHybrid, Eco to disable the dGPU, or Optimized for automatic AC/battery behavior. Armoury Crate 5.2.12 integrated the older MUX Switch and MSHybrid controls into GPU Mode, while Armoury Crate 6 places them under the device’s GPU Performance area. ASUS warns that changing GPU Mode can trigger a BitLocker recovery prompt, so have the recovery key available first.

Lenovo Legion and LOQ

On current supported systems, use:

Legion Space → GPU Mode

Possible choices include Hybrid Mode, dGPU Mode or DGPU Only Mode, Hybrid-iGPU Only and Hybrid-Auto Mode. Lenovo says switching to dGPU Mode requires an operating-system restart. Older or model-specific laptops may instead use:

Lenovo Vantage → GPU working mode

The available modes depend on the model and Legion Space or Vantage version. Lenovo’s current documentation is available in its Legion user guide.

MSI

On supported laptops, open:

MSI Center → Features → General Settings → GPU Switch

Some models use:

MSI Center → Features → User Scenario → GPU Switch

Typical choices are MSHybrid Graphics Mode, Discrete Graphics Mode and Integrated Graphics Mode. MSI requires a restart after changing the graphics mode. In Discrete Graphics Mode, the iGPU may disappear from Windows Device Manager because it has been disabled. Switch back to MSHybrid Graphics Mode and restart if both graphics adapters need to be visible. See MSI’s GPU Switch instructions and graphics-adapter detection guidance.

Acer Nitro

On supported Nitro models:

NitroSense → Settings → Discrete GPU only → enable the slider

Close NitroSense and restart. Some models also provide a firmware setting:

Power off → press F2 during startup → Advanced → Display mode
→ Discrete GPU only → Exit → Exit Saving Changes

The label may instead be NVIDIA GPU only or another model-specific name. Acer notes that MUX support can vary by model and internal display. On at least some systems, enabling discrete-only mode disables DisplayPort video output through USB-C. Check the exact model’s documentation before relying on that port. Acer’s configuration guidance is available in its Nitro support article.

Alienware

In Alienware Command Center 6.x, open:

Alienware Command Center → Settings → Performance → MUX Switch

Enable or disable the switch and restart if prompted. Dell says that enabling it disables the iGPU so the dGPU can drive the display directly, improving gaming performance at the cost of battery life. See Dell’s Alienware Command Center documentation.

MUX switch versus NVIDIA Control Panel

On laptops with Advanced Optimus, NVIDIA Control Panel may include:

NVIDIA Control Panel → Manage Display Mode

Common choices include Automatic Select, Optimus and NVIDIA GPU only. Automatic Select lets Advanced Optimus choose the display-driving GPU dynamically.

Windows 11 has a similar application-level setting:

Settings → System → Display → Graphics
→ select an app → Options → High performance → Save

Microsoft describes this as choosing the GPU preference for an app. It can help ensure a game uses the dGPU, but it is not a MUX switch and does not by itself change the display-routing path. The two settings can work together.

Does a MUX switch increase FPS?

Not always. A MUX switch does not make the dGPU’s processor faster, increase its power limit, raise clock speeds or improve cooling. Its benefit comes from changing how rendered frames reach the display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The improvement is most likely to matter when:

  • the built-in screen is routed through the iGPU in hybrid mode;
  • the game is producing high frame rates;
  • the CPU and GPU could otherwise render more frames;
  • the game is sensitive to input or display latency; or
  • you are testing at a resolution where the dGPU is not already fully saturated.

The difference may be small or negligible when the dGPU is already the bottleneck, the game is CPU-limited, ray tracing or a demanding resolution dominates performance, or the internal panel already uses Advanced Optimus or a direct-dGPU route.

In practical terms, direct-dGPU mode can improve frame rates, latency or frame-time consistency, but it is not a guaranteed large FPS upgrade. The result varies by game, resolution, refresh rate and system bottleneck.

What happens with an external monitor?

The laptop’s built-in display and its external outputs can use different GPU paths. For example, a model might route its internal screen through the iGPU while wiring HDMI directly to the dGPU. USB-C DisplayPort may be connected to either GPU, depending on the model.

As a result, an external monitor connected to a dGPU-wired HDMI or USB-C/DisplayPort output may already bypass the internal hybrid path, even while the built-in screen remains in hybrid mode. The connector type alone is not enough to determine the route. Verify the wiring for the exact laptop; MSI publishes model-specific output tables in its display-output guidance.

Changing GPU mode can also disable a particular output. Acer documents a case in which USB-C DisplayPort is unavailable in discrete-only mode, while MSI recommends switching between Discrete and MSHybrid modes and restarting when troubleshooting external-monitor detection.

Common problems and fixes

The MUX option is missing

Possible explanations include a laptop configuration without a MUX or Advanced Optimus switch, an unsupported internal panel, outdated BIOS or graphics drivers, a missing or incompatible vendor utility, or a different software and firmware generation than the instructions describe. MUX support can vary even between configurations in the same product family.

Check the exact model and panel specification first. Then update the manufacturer utility, BIOS, chipset software and graphics drivers using the vendor’s support page. Do not assume the control is merely hidden.

The screen goes black or the system freezes

Changing display mode reinitializes the graphics path. An unsupported panel, bad driver or manually forced NVIDIA-only setting can cause a black screen or freeze.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

As one model-specific example, ASUS documents a freeze issue on certain 2023 ROG laptops when NVIDIA GPU Only is manually selected in NVIDIA Control Panel. ASUS recommends using Armoury Crate’s Ultimate mode instead and identifies NVIDIA driver version 31.0.15.2866 or later as the fix for that issue. This recommendation should not be generalized to every ASUS laptop.

The integrated GPU disappears from Device Manager

This can be normal in discrete-only mode because the iGPU is disabled. On MSI systems, switch back to MSHybrid Graphics Mode and restart if both adapters are expected to appear.

BitLocker requests a recovery key

Changing GPU mode can alter hardware or firmware measurements used by device encryption. ASUS warns that this may activate BitLocker protection. Confirm that you can access the BitLocker recovery key before changing modes.

The NVIDIA GPU does not appear in Windows

In an iGPU-only or Eco mode, the dGPU may be intentionally disabled. Switch back to a hybrid or discrete mode and restart. ASUS specifically notes that discrete-graphics information will not appear under Windows display adapters while Eco Mode is active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should you use each mode?

  • Hybrid, Standard or Optimized: use for general work, streaming and gaming when you want a balance between performance, battery life, heat and fan noise.
  • Discrete GPU, dGPU Only, NVIDIA GPU Only or Ultimate: use while plugged in when chasing maximum performance or the lowest possible display latency.
  • Eco or iGPU Only: use for battery-powered productivity when gaming performance is not important.

Save your BitLocker recovery key before changing modes, and check the laptop’s port wiring if you use an external display. A MUX switch is valuable, but it is a display-routing feature—not a replacement for a faster GPU, higher power limit or better cooling.
