What is happening with MW3 split-screen?
Activision’s Known Issues in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III page, dated August 7, 2026, lists an all-platform issue that can lead to a “Lost Connection to Host” message during split-screen play. Activision says the issue is under investigation.
That entry is the clearest official confirmation of a current split-screen problem, but it describes a specific host-connection error. It does not establish that missing split-screen options, failure to start a session, or every other problem players report after an update is part of the same bug. The tracker provides no frequency or player-count data.
Did the latest update break split-screen?
Some players have blamed updates for split-screen failures, while other posts have claimed that a later update restored play. Those Reddit reports conflict and are anecdotal; they do not establish that one update caused the same widespread regression across platforms or that a universal fix has been released. See the reports titled “Split screen not working anymore”, “New update today fixes splitscreen!!”, and “They broke split screen with their last patch” (June 2026).

Activision’s tracked issue is labeled for all platforms, but the available information does not break down symptoms or workarounds separately for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. The Xbox product listing advertises shared/split screen as a game capability; that listing does not verify that the feature is currently working, or establish its status on other platforms.
What can you do if split-screen is not working?
First compare the problem you see with Activision’s tracked symptom. If the failure involves “Lost Connection to Host” while playing split-screen, it matches the issue under investigation. If the problem is different or is not listed, Activision directs players to its MWIII Bug Report form. The form is a way to report an issue, not a confirmed workaround or a promise of an individual resolution.

The current tracker entry does not give a fix date or troubleshooting steps. There is therefore no verified official workaround to recommend for the tracked error. Avoid assuming that replacing hardware or buying another copy will resolve a software issue; the available information does not support those as remedies.

- Season 1, December 2023: Activision’s Season 1 patch notes said private-match Gunfight split-screen would no longer cause DEV ERROR 12744. The notes also included an adjustment to split-screen menu scrolling.
- Season 5, September 5, 2024: Sledgehammer Games’ Season 5 patch notes said a Celship issue causing split-screen players to encounter DEV ERROR 12744 was fixed.
These were fixes for a particular error in specific modes or maps. They are not evidence that the issue Activision is investigating in 2026 has been fixed.
