Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered is a polished presentation of the 2009 game’s single-player campaign, but it is not a remaster of the full original package. It leaves out Multiplayer and Spec Ops, so whether it is worth buying depends on how much you want to replay the story and its cinematic set pieces on their own.
What is Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered?
Released in 2020, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered updates the single-player campaign from 2009’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Activision describes it as featuring HD visuals and lists missions such as “Cliffhanger,” “The Gulag” and “Whiskey Hotel.” It is a campaign remaster, not a remaster of every mode from the original game. Activision’s launch announcement identifies Beenox as the remaster developer and Infinity Ward as the original developer.

Does Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered have multiplayer or Spec Ops?
No. The remaster does not include the original game’s Multiplayer or Spec Ops modes. Activision stated this explicitly in its April 30, 2020 availability announcement. If you are looking for the 2009 game’s competitive multiplayer or cooperative missions, this release will not provide them.

What did critics think of the remastered campaign?
On Metacritic, the game had a 71 Metascore from 39 critic reviews, categorized as “Mixed or Average,” and a 7.7 user score from 490 ratings, categorized as “Generally Favorable,” when accessed on October 8, 2026. These are live aggregate snapshots, not permanent scores. Metacritic’s review summary provides the current listing.
The critical divide is less about whether the campaign has memorable moments than about what a buyer gets for a campaign-only release. Reviews praise the cinematic action, set pieces, nostalgia and improved visuals. Reservations focus on the limited scope, missing modes, dated mechanics or design, and whether the campaign alone merits the launch price. Metacritic’s critic-review page shows that range of opinion.

Is Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered worth it?
It is easiest to recommend if you want the solo story, enjoy the original campaign’s action sequences, or are returning for nostalgia. The visual update gives those missions a refreshed presentation, while the campaign remains the entire proposition: there are no additional original modes to extend it.
It is a weaker fit if your main reason for revisiting the 2009 game is its multiplayer or Spec Ops, or if you expect a broad package rather than a focused campaign replay. The central buying question is therefore not whether the original game had more content—it did—but whether this campaign, presented with updated visuals, is enough for you. Check the current price on your platform before deciding; prices and store availability can change.

Which platforms is MW2 Campaign Remastered on?
Activision announced the release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Its March 31, 2020 announcement said console presentation supports up to 4K resolution and HDR, while the PC version supports uncapped framerate and ultrawide monitors. Those are platform-specific features, not a promise that every version has identical output. Activision’s announcement gives the launch details.
PlayStation’s US product page lists the PS4 version and says it is playable on PS5. It also cautions that some PS4 features may be absent and that an update to the latest system software may be required. Consult the PlayStation Store listing for that compatibility notice and current store information.
