For a manga-main-story watch of Naruto: Shippuden, skip the pure-filler ranges listed below. Keep episodes classified as mixed canon/filler, because they can include manga-story material alongside anime-original scenes. Episode 28 is a separate case: it is classified as anime canon, not filler. These are episode-guide conventions, not an official ruling on what every viewer must consider canon.
Pure filler episodes to skip
The ranges in this table are classified as filler by Anime Filler List. The numbers are inclusive: for example, 57–71 means episodes 57 through 71. To follow the manga-derived main plot while cutting anime-original material, skip these episodes.

Apply the ranges as written rather than treating a long block of surrounding episodes as filler. Episodes outside these intervals are not automatically skippable: some are manga-canon, some are mixed, and one notable exception, episode 28, is anime canon. If you are following a separate guide, check its labels before extending a skip across a range boundary.

Mixed episodes combine relevant manga-story content with anime-only scenes. A guide may mark an episode mixed even when much of its runtime is original, because the episode can still carry a plot beat or setup that matters to the manga-main-story route. The conservative choice is to watch the full episode rather than trying to identify which individual scenes to fast-forward.
#1 Best Overall
Anime Filler List labels these episodes as mixed canon/filler:
- 1–19, 24–25, 45, 49–50, 54, 56
- 89–90, 113, 115, 127–128
- 213, 254, 296
- 324, 327–328, 330–331, 338, 346
- 362, 385–386, 415, 419, 426
- 451–458, 460–462, 469, 471–472, 478–479
These are contiguous intervals where a hyphen appears; the other numbers are single episodes. Do not confuse the mixed list with the filler table: for instance, 451–458 are mixed by this classification, while 427–450 are listed as filler. Episode numbering resumes normally across the series, so this distinction is useful at transitions as well as in the middle of long arcs.

Episode 28: anime canon, not filler
Anime Filler List labels episode 28 “anime canon.” That is a different category from its pure-filler designation. If your personal rule is to watch only material adapted from the manga, you can omit episode 28; if you want anime-original story as well, keep it. The label does not make episode 28 necessary to the manga plot, nor does it place the episode in the pure-filler ranges above.

Choose a watch route
| Route | What to watch | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Main-story fast route | Watch manga-canon and mixed episodes; skip the pure-filler ranges. Decide separately whether to include anime-canon episode 28. | Viewers prioritizing manga-plot continuity and less anime-original material. |
| Balanced route | Follow the main-story route, then add anime-original arcs that appeal to you. | Viewers who want the core plot but are open to character-focused side stories. |
| Completionist route | Watch all 500 episodes in order. | Viewers who want the full series, including anime-original material. |
The main-story route is not a claim that every episode outside the manga is poor or disposable. It is a time-and-continuity choice: it preserves the manga-derived plot while omitting episodes classified as pure filler. The balanced route treats the filler list as a filter rather than a quality ranking. Completionists can ignore the skip ranges and watch the series as broadcast.

How to decide whether to add an anime-original arc
Use three questions rather than relying on a blanket “good filler” or “bad filler” verdict:
- How strictly do you want to follow the manga plot? If strict continuity is the priority, keep mixed episodes and use the pure-filler ranges to identify material outside that route.
- Do you want extra character stories? Anime-original arcs can provide character-focused side stories, though they are optional to the manga-derived plot.
- How much time do you have? Skip the listed ranges for a faster plot-focused watch; add selected arcs when you have room for material beyond the main plot.
GamesRadar recommends the Kakashi: Shadow of the ANBU Black Ops arc as an optional watch. That is an editorial preference, not a requirement for understanding the manga-main-story route. Viewer taste varies, and a filler classification describes a relationship to the manga plot rather than a judgment of an episode’s entertainment value.

What “filler” means here
In this guide, filler means anime-original story material that does not adapt the manga’s main plot. Mixed canon/filler means an episode combines relevant manga-story content with additional anime-only scenes. The distinction matters more than a single series-wide filler percentage: skip pure filler if you want a manga-main-story route, but preserve mixed episodes to reduce the risk of missing story content.
These labels are conventions used by episode-guide publishers. They are not an official franchise decree, and they may not settle every argument about anime continuity or adaptations of supplementary material. Different guides can therefore use slightly different totals or classifications. For an efficient watch, the practical question is whether a particular episode is listed as pure filler or mixed—not whether every reference guide agrees on one exact count.

How many filler episodes does Naruto: Shippuden have?
Naruto: Shippuden ran from 2007 to 2017 and has 500 episodes, according to Anime Filler List’s episode guide, updated September 3, 2024. That guide reports 203 filler episodes, or 41%, while its classification table distinguishes manga canon, mixed canon/filler, filler, and anime canon. Digital Citizen’s guide dated January 12, 2026 describes around 204 episodes as pure filler and also distinguishes pure filler from mixed episodes.
Those counts differ because guides can classify episodes differently; they should not be presented as one universally settled official total. For a viewing decision, the episode ranges and the definition behind them are more useful than the percentage alone. This list follows Anime Filler List’s episode-by-episode labels for the pure-filler and mixed categories, while Digital Citizen’s separate count illustrates why a figure from one guide should be attributed rather than treated as definitive.
Watching options and episode coverage
The skip list is a viewing aid, not a claim about where the series is currently available to stream or buy. A historical episode overview records a North American DVD release in 2009, but that fact does not establish that a current set is complete, in stock, or compatible with your region or preferred language. If you are considering physical media, verify the specific release’s episode coverage, region, language, seller, and current availability before buying. No particular current listing or edition is established here.
