Start by checking which libraries your membership includes, then use Nintendo’s console browsing tools to inspect games and previews before making a shortlist.
Check your membership, console and region first
Nintendo Switch Online does not offer every classic-game library to every member. Nintendo’s U.S. membership overview describes NES, Super NES and Game Boy games as part of standard Nintendo Switch Online. The Expansion Pack adds more libraries, including Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance and SEGA Genesis; Nintendo’s current support information also lists Virtual Boy among Expansion Pack offerings. GameCube games are playable exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Those are U.S.-described offerings, not a guarantee that every library or title is available in every region or on every compatible console. Before you settle on a game, confirm that your membership tier, region and hardware support its library. This matters particularly if a title you want appears in a platform-specific or region-limited catalog.

- Standard Nintendo Switch Online: check the NES, Super NES and Game Boy libraries.
- Expansion Pack: check its additional libraries, including Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, SEGA Genesis and Virtual Boy.
- Nintendo Switch 2: required for GameCube games.
Nintendo describes the service as offering “over 150 favorites.” Treat that as a broad promotional figure, not an exact count of the current catalog: the available libraries and games can change.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Think of the tier check as the first filter, not a verdict about which catalog is better. If you already have standard membership, begin with the NES, Super NES and Game Boy collections rather than assuming you need to upgrade. If a specific game is in a library added by Expansion Pack, compare the cost of that tier with how much you expect to use it. The library you can actually open is more useful than a wish list built from games you cannot access.
Nintendo’s U.S. membership page listed individual membership at $19.99 USD per year and family membership at $34.99 USD per year when accessed on October 11, 2026. These are dated U.S. prices, not a promise of current pricing or prices elsewhere. Check Nintendo’s current membership page before choosing a plan or quoting a price; the price does not change the fact that access to classic games depends on maintaining the qualifying membership.
Browse the libraries on your console
On Nintendo Switch 2
- From the HOME Menu, select Nintendo Switch Online.
- Choose Nintendo Classics.
- Select the library you want to browse and download its software if needed.
- Open a game’s details to inspect its information, screenshots and available short video preview, then launch it if you want to try it.
On Nintendo Switch
- Open Nintendo eShop.
- Go to the Nintendo Switch Online area and locate the classic-game library software.
- Choose a library, then browse the available games and their details.
Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Online system guide says: “You can learn all about each game, view screenshots, watch a short video preview, and even launch the game if you want to try it out.” Use those previews to check whether a game’s presentation and pace appeal to you; they are not an official quality ranking.
There are two access caveats to account for while browsing: Nintendo says Virtual Boy is available only in the U.S. and Canada, and its support instructions say the Virtual Boy library will not appear on Nintendo Switch Lite. If a library is missing, first check your region, console and membership rather than assuming the title has been removed.
Browse with a question in mind rather than scrolling until a familiar title catches your eye. For example, decide whether you want something for solo play, a quick session, a particular genre or a group. Open several candidates that meet that need, and use the details and video previews to compare them. The previews can help you see a game’s presentation and get a sense of pace, but they do not establish every feature or guarantee that you will enjoy playing it.
Keep the library name beside each candidate as you browse. It is easy to remember a game title but forget which tier or platform it belongs to, especially when moving between several Nintendo Classics collections. Recording the library and required membership along with your first impression makes the next step—checking whether you can download and launch it—much simpler.
Build a shortlist around what you enjoy
Do not begin by asking which game is “the best” in the abstract. Pick a few criteria that reflect how you actually play, then compare several candidates in the same library or genre. The following are practical recommendation criteria, not Nintendo-published ratings. Nintendo supplies browsing information and previews, not an official universal ranking of its classic games.

Genre and mood
Start with the kinds of play you seek out: for example, a focused challenge, exploration, strategy or a story-led experience. The available details and previews can help you decide whether a game looks like a fit. If you are unsure, preview more than one game in a preferred genre instead of choosing the first title you recognize.
Also distinguish genre from mood. Two games in a broad genre can still make very different choices about pace, challenge and presentation. If you want a relaxed session, do not assume that a game will feel relaxing just because its subject or art looks inviting; watch the preview for clues about tempo, and try it if the service lets you launch it.
Solo or multiplayer
Decide whether you want something for a solo session or something to play with other people. Check the game’s details for the information Nintendo provides, and do not infer a multiplayer mode from a screenshot or the fact that the game is in a particular library. If playing together is essential, treat multiplayer availability as a requirement to verify, not a bonus you hope the game includes.
Likewise, separate “a game I want to play” from “a game that suits the people who will be playing with me.” The second choice may depend on the intended setup and the details Nintendo displays. If the information you need is not there, leave it as unknown and confirm it before making the game your group pick.
Session length and pace
Consider when you expect to play. A game that suits a short break may be a better match than one that asks you to keep track of a longer run, while a slower pace may be exactly what you want for a relaxed session. Use a preview to judge tempo and presentation; it cannot establish every detail of how a full game plays.
Be honest about the kind of friction you enjoy. Some players like having to experiment and learn as they go; others would rather have a game that feels immediately legible. Neither preference is a measure of quality. It simply helps you avoid picking a game because it is widely recognized when its pace or demands do not suit your time and mood.
Controls and older design conventions
Classic games can feel different from newer releases in their controls, pacing and assumptions about how much guidance they provide. Think about whether you are comfortable learning through experimentation or prefer a more immediately familiar control style. A short preview can give you a first impression, but it may not show how every control works in play.

If a traditional-style controller matters to you, check current availability and compatibility before buying one. Nintendo Support has confirmed that members in the U.S. and Canada have had the option to purchase specially designed classic game controllers as a special offer. That does not establish current stock or suitability for every console, so treat the controller as an optional preference—not a requirement for choosing a game.

A short comparison keeps a familiar name from winning by default. Use a simple table of your own: add only games you can currently access, and record what you learn from the game details and preview. If information is not shown there, leave it unknown rather than guessing.
| What to compare | What to record | Why it affects your choice |
|---|---|---|
| Library and membership | The library the game belongs to and whether your tier includes it | A promising game is not a practical pick if you cannot access its library. |
| Console and region | Whether that library is available for your hardware and region | Some offerings are platform- or region-limited. |
| Genre and mood | Whether the game matches what you want to play | A personal fit is more useful than an unsupported universal ranking. |
| Player setup | Solo or multiplayer details, where stated | This helps distinguish a game for individual play from one that suits a group. |
| Pace and controls | Your impression from the information and preview | Older pacing or control conventions may suit one player and frustrate another. |
| Access and storage | Whether you can download the library and have enough console space | A title is only a useful shortlist choice if you can install and launch its library software. |
Give each candidate a brief note such as “fits my preferred genre,” “preview feels too slow,” or “check multiplayer details.” You do not need to assign numerical scores: the point is to make your preferences visible and compare like with like. If two titles remain tied, try each one if available and decide based on your own response.
A practical shortlist might have three columns: “want to try,” “why it might fit,” and “what I still need to check.” That last column prevents an assumption—such as an unverified multiplayer mode or a library you do not have—from turning into a recommendation. You can also add a status such as “available to me now” or “requires a different tier.” Keep the list small enough that you will actually try the games rather than building an ever-longer catalog of possibilities.
When you recommend a game to another person, make the comparison useful to that person. Name the platform library and membership requirement, then say what kind of player or session it may suit. Avoid calling a title the best overall unless you explain the preference behind that judgment. A clear, limited recommendation is more helpful than a score that suggests Nintendo has ranked the catalog.
Know the membership and offline-play conditions
Access to the classic games requires an active qualifying Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo says downloaded classic games can be played offline, but the console must connect to the internet to verify membership at least once every seven days. If the membership lapses, the classic games become inaccessible until it resumes; the game save data remains on the console.
That means downloading a library is not the same as owning its games outright. If you expect to play without an internet connection for more than a week, make sure the console has completed an online membership check before you leave. If you return to a game after a lapse, restore the qualifying membership and connect the console so access can be verified.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
This condition is worth checking before travel or any other extended offline stretch. A successful download does not remove the recurring verification requirement. If a game stops launching after a long time offline, reconnecting is the first sensible troubleshooting step; if the membership itself has ended, renew or resume the qualifying plan as well.
Download the library and resolve access problems
Get the correct library software
Use the console-specific route: on Switch 2, choose Nintendo Switch Online from HOME, then Nintendo Classics and the library you need; on Switch, locate the classic-game libraries through Nintendo eShop’s Nintendo Switch Online section. If the correct library does not appear, check the membership tier, region and console compatibility first. Virtual Boy’s U.S. and Canada restriction and its absence from Switch Lite are specific examples of why a library may not show up.

On Switch 2, Nintendo’s instructions direct members to select the library and download its software. On Switch, the path is through the Nintendo Switch Online section of Nintendo eShop, where you locate the classic-game library software. Follow the steps for the console you are using rather than looking for one identical menu path on both systems.
Make room if a download will not fit
If console storage is insufficient, Nintendo Support describes using a compatible microSD card for Switch or a microSD Express card for Switch 2. Confirm card compatibility for your console before buying one. Storage is a download consideration, not a way to expand which membership libraries you can access.
Do not buy a card just because you are browsing games. First see whether you have enough room for the library software you want to download. If you do need extra space, choose the card type appropriate to your console and verify compatibility with Nintendo’s current instructions. Storage capacity cannot substitute for the membership, hardware or regional eligibility a library requires.
Restore access after membership or connectivity changes
- If a classic game is inaccessible, confirm that the membership covering its library is active.
- If you have been offline, connect the console to the internet so it can complete the required membership verification.
- If the game or library is still missing, recheck hardware and regional availability, then confirm you downloaded the appropriate library software.
- If membership has lapsed, Nintendo says save data remains on the console; access to classic games returns when membership resumes.
Work through those checks in order instead of assuming a game has disappeared from the catalog. The issue may be the tier, the console, regional availability, the library software or the seven-day membership check. Nintendo’s live information is the place to confirm current offerings and access instructions.
Keep your shortlist current
Nintendo’s libraries are not a fixed list. New additions, catalog contents, platform support, regional availability and membership details can change. Recheck Nintendo’s live library and the relevant membership information when you are ready to download or recommend a title, and name the library and required membership tier when sharing a pick.

Nintendo’s U.S. overview described the Nintendo Classics offering as including “over 150 favorites” when accessed on October 11, 2026. Because the catalogs change, do not treat that figure as an exact inventory count or as proof that a specific game is currently available. Check the live catalog for the title you want. The same applies to membership prices, newly added games, hardware requirements and special-offer controllers.
The most reliable way to find your next game is therefore a repeatable process: confirm access, browse the library, preview candidates that match your preferences, and try the strongest fits. That gives you a shortlist based on what you want to play rather than a ranking Nintendo does not publish.
