In 2026, the NASCAR Cup Series postseason is The Chase: 16 drivers qualify on regular-season points, then race across the final 10 events for the championship. There are no round-by-round eliminations, and the driver with the most points after the finale is champion.
How does the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series playoff format work?
The season is split into a 26-race regular season and a 10-race Chase. The top 16 drivers in the regular-season standings qualify. Before the Chase begins, NASCAR reseeds those drivers once; points earned in the postseason then determine the champion.

NASCAR calls the 2026 championship format The Chase. It is a points-based postseason, not the 2025 system of elimination rounds and a winner-take-all final race. NASCAR says the format review aimed to give the championship a larger sample of races, make each event more important, and recognize consistency alongside winning; those are the sanctioning body’s stated goals, not independently measured outcomes. NASCAR’s Chase 101 explainer and its January 2026 announcement describe the rules.
How many drivers qualify, and is it still “win and you’re in”?
Sixteen drivers advance, based solely on regular-season points standings. A race win does not automatically qualify a driver for the Chase. That means a victory can boost a driver’s points total, but it does not replace the points-based qualification rule.

How does the Chase points reset work?
NASCAR reseeds the 16 drivers once, after the 26-race regular season. The top seed starts with 2,100 points; second starts with 2,075; third with 2,065; and each subsequent seed through 16th loses five points, with 16th starting at 2,000. The regular-season champion therefore begins the Chase 25 points ahead of the second seed.
| Chase seed | Starting points |
|---|---|
| 1st | 2,100 |
| 2nd | 2,075 |
| 3rd | 2,065 |
| 4th–16th | Five-point decrease per seed, ending at 2,000 for 16th |
These are the NASCAR Cup Series 2026 reseeding values, not a points reset repeated after each group of races.

How are race points awarded in 2026?
A race win is worth 55 points. Second place earns 35, third 34, fourth 33, and each position thereafter descends by one point. Stage points remain available: first in a stage earns 10, second earns 9, continuing down by one point. NASCAR says bankable playoff points are no longer part of the system. The official format explainer sets out the Cup scoring and Chase rules.
Are drivers eliminated during the 2026 Chase?
No. All 16 qualifiers remain in the Chase for all 10 races; there are no cutoff rounds that remove drivers from championship contention. A driver can fall so far behind that winning the title is no longer mathematically possible, but NASCAR does not eliminate drivers at scheduled round breaks.

How is the 2026 Cup champion decided?
The Chase driver with the most points after the season finale wins the championship. There is no winner-take-all Championship 4 race. Points accumulated through the full 10-race postseason decide the title.
What changed from the 2025 Cup playoff format?
In 2025, 16 drivers competed in four rounds with eliminations, and the highest-finishing driver among the final four in the finale won the championship. The 2026 Chase instead keeps all 16 in the postseason for 10 races and awards the title to the driver with the most points at the end. NASCAR’s 2025 Playoffs Grid Challenge FAQ and 2025 Cup Series playoff standings provide context for the prior format.
| Format detail | 2026 Chase | 2025 playoffs |
|---|---|---|
| Postseason length | 10 races | Four rounds, ending with the Championship 4 finale |
| Automatic entry with a win | No; qualification is based on regular-season points | 2025 format applied; see NASCAR’s 2025 FAQ |
| Eliminations | None during the Chase | Drivers were eliminated at round cutoffs |
| Points reset | One reseed after the regular season | Round-based elimination structure |
| Champion | Most points after the 10th race | Highest-finishing driver among the final four in the finale |
Where can I check the current 2026 Chase field?
The field and clinch status change as races are completed, so a dated standings snapshot should not be treated as the live cutoff. NASCAR’s Cup Series standings page showed the season after Las Vegas on October 4, 2026, at Race 31 of 36, with the top 16 competing in the championship battle. Check that page for the latest standings rather than relying on that October 4 snapshot.
The separate In-Season Challenge is a midseason bracket competition, not the championship Chase. Chase qualification is determined by regular-season points.
