Yes. NBA 2K25 introduced a new ProPLAY-powered dribble engine for its new-generation gameplay. 2K says the engine uses real-world NBA footage to generate dynamic movement; the publisher also highlights a new left-stick dribble mechanic. These are design claims, not independent proof that dribbling is more realistic, easier to control, or competitively better than in NBA 2K24.
What is new about dribbling in NBA 2K25?
The headline change is an all-new dribble engine powered by ProPLAY. In its August 1, 2024 announcement, 2K said the engine creates dynamic motion from real NBA footage and described the change as one of its most impactful gameplay-engine updates in years. 2K’s announcement presents the system’s intended design; it does not provide an independent comparison of how it performs against NBA 2K24.

Microsoft’s developer feature adds context from Visual Concepts: it characterizes the earlier approach as manually programmed transitions between pre-scripted motion-capture animations and contrasts that with NBA 2K25’s dynamic motion from real-world footage. Eric Boenisch, Visual Concepts’ VP of NBA Development, described the goal as making ball movement “one holistic, dynamic piece of motion, one-to-one with how players dribble in real life.” That is the development team’s description of its design, not a measured finding. How many new animations did 2K report?
2K reported 9,000 new ProPLAY animations in NBA 2K25, including 1,500 dribbling animations. Those are publisher-reported animation totals for the 2024 game; they should not be read as 1,500 new dribble moves or as an independently counted measure of the engine. 2K’s gameplay announcement provides the figures.

Which platforms are covered by the new system?
2K announced the new-generation gameplay innovations for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The available detailed control reference discussed below is specifically for PS5. These sources do not establish that the same dribble features or inputs are available with parity on PS4, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch. 2K’s 2024 launch announcement identifies the game’s platforms.
What dribble controls can players use?
The official PS5 manual documents right-stick Pro Stick actions including signature size-ups, breakdown dribbles, hesitations, crossovers, behind-the-back moves, spins, and stepbacks. The official support overview also calls out a new left-stick dribble mechanic. It points players to Learn 2K, available from the main menu, for mini-games, drills, and practice scenarios. Use those exercises to get familiar with the controls; the published materials do not identify a best move or establish that a particular controller gives an advantage. The available sources explain what 2K says it changed and how the development team intended the movement to work. They do not establish through independent testing that NBA 2K25 is more realistic, easier to control, or better competitively than NBA 2K24.
