Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered vs. the Original: What Changed and Which Should You Play?

For a first-time player, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered is the safer choice. Electronic Arts describes it as the original cops-versus-racers experience with enhanced visuals, cross-platform asynchronous competition, and the main downloadable content included. That package adds the clearest value for someone starting from scratch.

If you already own the original, the decision is less automatic. The remaster is worth considering for its additional challenges, crossplay, updated presentation, revised interface, or access on a supported platform. If you only want the same core game and your existing copy still works, compare the current regional price before buying it again.

Quick verdict

Player situation Best choice Why
You have never played it Remastered It combines the original cops-versus-racers concept with the main DLC, more challenges, cross-platform competition and visual updates.
You own the original and still play it Usually keep the original unless the additions matter The remaster’s strongest reasons to repurchase are bundled content, crossplay, presentation changes and platform access.
You want to play with friends on another platform Remastered EA documents cross-platform asynchronous competition through Autolog. The original and remaster are not documented as cross-compatible with each other.
You are buying for a specific console or PC The remaster edition for that platform Confirm the exact store listing, regional price and compatibility before paying.

This is a feature-based recommendation, not a claim that every technical aspect performs better on every platform. No reliable platform-by-platform resolution or frame-rate comparison is established in the available material.

What the remaster actually changes

Enhanced visuals, especially in night scenes

EA presents the remaster as a visual update to the original game. Its Steam announcements include a side-by-side comparison and specifically describe brighter night scenes. That is useful context when deciding whether the game will look fresher on a modern display, but it does not establish a universal resolution or frame-rate target.

The safe conclusion is that the remaster changes the presentation rather than replacing the game’s identity. It remains the cops-versus-racers format that defined the original release. The documented evidence does not provide controlled measurements for texture quality, loading times, resolution, frame pacing or performance across PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch, so those details should not be treated as guaranteed improvements.

Cross-platform asynchronous competition

Multiplayer is the most consequential functional addition. EA describes cross-platform asynchronous competition powered by Autolog. In practical terms, players can compare results and compete through recorded performance across supported platforms rather than being restricted to one hardware ecosystem.

The PC manual identifies a Crossplay setting and explains that cross-platform friends can be found through the EA Friends list. That gives PC players a documented route to enable the feature and locate friends who play elsewhere. The evidence supports cross-platform play and comparison for the remaster; it does not establish that every activity is a live, real-time session or that every platform uses identical options.

Most importantly, the original and remastered editions should be treated as separate multiplayer environments. Crossplay refers to players using the remaster on different platforms, not to the original release connecting with the remaster.

The main downloadable content is bundled

EA’s 2020 launch announcement says the remaster includes “all the main DLC — delivering an extra six hours of gameplay and more than 30 challenges.” Those figures are EA’s description of the included package, not an independent playtime test.

For a new player, this changes the value calculation: you do not have to assemble the base game and its main expansion content separately. For an original owner, the question is whether those additional events justify purchasing another edition. If you already completed the original and its add-ons, the remaster’s bundled content is less persuasive than it is for someone starting with no existing content.

Updated career presentation and photo mode options

EA’s launch materials also call out an updated career experience covering both sides of the conflict: cop and racer. They mention new photo mode options as well. The available evidence does not enumerate every career adjustment or photo setting, so it is more accurate to describe these as documented additions than to promise a particular menu layout or feature list.

The practical effect is that the remaster packages the single-player progression and extra activities as a more complete starting point. It does not, by itself, prove that the underlying event design, vehicle handling or progression balance was rebuilt.

Interface and menu changes

A contemporary Meristation review reports HUD and interface changes, along with faster transitions between menus and events. Those are the reviewer’s observations, not a measured benchmark or a guarantee for every platform.

These changes matter most if you spend a lot of time moving between events, checking results or managing career activities. They matter less if your priority is simply the driving and you are satisfied with the original interface. Because the observation comes from a review rather than a controlled cross-platform test, treat it as an informed report rather than a promised loading-time improvement.

What is not established as changed

A remaster can alter presentation and packaging without changing every part of the original game. The documented differences here cover visuals, multiplayer connectivity, included content, career presentation, photo mode and interface observations.

No supplied source establishes a change to vehicle physics, handling, artificial-intelligence behavior, event balance, soundtrack, progression rules or exact control response. If one of those details determines your purchase, do not infer an answer from the remaster label alone. The defensible comparison is that the remaster preserves the original cops-versus-racers premise while adding or revising the features listed above.

Edition and platform availability

EA’s official listing covers PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. EA’s 2020 announcement gave November 6 as the launch date for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, followed by November 13 for Switch.

Platform or compatibility question Documented information What to verify before purchase
PC Included in EA’s platform listing and launched November 6, 2020. Check the current PC store edition, system requirements and whether your friends use the remaster’s Crossplay feature.
PlayStation 4 Officially listed; launched November 6, 2020. Confirm the regional digital or physical listing and any edition-specific content description.
Xbox One Named in EA’s launch announcement for November 6, 2020. Check the current Xbox store listing and compatibility information for the console you own.
Nintendo Switch Officially listed; launched November 13, 2020. Confirm the regional store listing and the features available in the Switch edition.
PlayStation 5 PlayStation says the game can be played on PS5, while some PS4 features may be absent. Read the current compatibility notice for the exact PS5 setup and do not assume every PS4 feature is present.

The available evidence does not establish current regional pricing, inventory, platform-specific performance, active player populations or parity of every feature between editions. Those details can change by country and storefront, so check the listing for the platform you actually use rather than relying on an old launch price.

Which version should you play?

If you are a new player

Choose the remaster unless a specific platform or availability issue prevents it. You receive the original game’s central cops-versus-racers structure plus the main DLC package, the additional challenges described by EA, cross-platform asynchronous competition and the visual/interface updates.

Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered - Standard - Steam PC [Online Game Code]
  • Cross-Platform Multiplayer and Autolog - Bolt down the winding Seacrest County roads headfirst in racing that is socially competitive at its core.
  • All Main DLC Included, Plus More Updates - Get all main DLC delivered at launch including an extra six hours of gameplay and more than 30 challenges.
  • Exotic Cars with Weapons - Drive the world’s most desirable supercars on both sides of the law.
  • Chase and Escape - A deep and fully-defined single-player career delivers the action of both cops and racers.
  • Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered delivers a timeless racing experience updated for today's generation of Hardware with enhanced visuals

This recommendation is especially strong when your friends use different hardware. The remaster’s documented Crossplay support means your comparison and friend-list options are not limited to one platform family. It still does not mean that a friend using the original edition can join a remastered session.

If you already own the original

Use a feature-based purchase test rather than assuming that “remastered” automatically means “necessary.” Buy the remaster when at least one of these is important to you:

  • You want the main DLC and its extra challenges in one package.
  • You need cross-platform competition with friends using the remaster on another platform.
  • You prefer the remaster’s enhanced visual presentation, including the brighter night scenes described by EA.
  • You want the updated career presentation, photo mode options or reported interface changes.
  • You are moving to a supported platform where the original is unavailable or inconvenient.

If none of those applies and your original copy already provides the events and multiplayer arrangement you want, keeping it can be the sensible choice. Compare the current price in your country and for your exact edition before deciding; no universal price advantage is established here.

If cross-platform friends are the deciding factor

Make sure everyone is using the remaster. On PC, the manual documents a Crossplay setting and access to cross-platform friends through the EA Friends list. The feature is designed for the remaster’s supported-platform ecosystem, not for linking the original release to the remaster.

Because EA describes the competition as asynchronous, set expectations correctly: the documented feature supports cross-platform comparison and competition, but the available information does not promise that every multiplayer mode is a shared live session across all platforms.

If you are choosing between console editions

Start with the hardware you already own. EA lists the remaster for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox and Switch, with the launch timing noted above. The Switch version arrived later than the other launch editions, and PlayStation’s compatibility note says some PS4 features may be absent when played on PS5.

Do not select an edition based on an assumed frame rate, resolution or feature parity. Those technical comparisons are not established by the cited material. Instead, verify the current store page for your country, the exact console generation, included content and any compatibility restrictions.

A practical buying checklist

Use this sequence before spending money, particularly if you already own the original:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify your existing edition. Note the platform, physical or digital format and whether you already own the original’s additional content.
  2. List the feature you actually want. Choose one primary reason—DLC, crossplay, presentation, interface, photo mode or access on another platform—rather than treating the remaster label as the reason.
  3. Check your friends’ editions. Cross-platform competition applies to the remaster ecosystem. Confirm that the people you want to compare with are also using the remaster.
  4. Verify platform compatibility. For PS5, read the current PlayStation notice because some PS4 features may be absent. For other platforms, confirm the exact store listing and supported hardware.
  5. Check the current regional price. Compare the remaster with the cost of continuing to use your existing copy. Prices, discounts and physical availability vary by country and date.
  6. Ignore unverified performance promises. The available evidence does not establish a universal resolution, frame rate, loading-time result or active-player count.

Common assumptions to avoid

“Crossplay means the original and remaster can play together”

It does not. The documented cross-platform feature concerns remaster players on different platforms. Nothing in the available material establishes compatibility between the original edition and the remaster.

“Enhanced visuals guarantee a specific technical upgrade”

EA’s materials support the broad claim of enhanced visuals and brighter night scenes. They do not provide a reliable platform-by-platform resolution or frame-rate comparison, so avoid quoting one unless a platform-specific source verifies it.

“Six hours and more than 30 challenges are an independent playtime measurement”

Those are figures from EA’s 2020 launch description of the included main DLC. They identify the scope of the package, not a guaranteed completion time for every player.

“Every version has identical features”

Platform differences can matter. PlayStation specifically notes that some PS4 features may be absent on PS5, and the available documentation does not establish complete feature parity across PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Play the remaster if you are new, want the included DLC and challenges, or need cross-platform competition. Keep the original if it already supplies the content and platform access you need and none of the remaster’s documented additions justify another purchase. In either case, verify the current regional listing and your platform’s compatibility instead of assuming that price or technical performance is identical everywhere.
