Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered PC settings for smooth 4K gameplay

For 4K play, set the game to 3840×2160, begin with high visual quality, and judge success by consistent frame delivery rather than a headline average. Electronic Arts said the PC edition can reach “up to 4K/60 FPS,” but explicitly makes that capability dependent on the player’s system (EA announcement, November 6, 2020). There is no universal GPU or CPU threshold that guarantees a locked 60 FPS. Keep resolution fixed, test a repeatable stretch of driving, and reduce one demanding option at a time when pacing is uneven.

What “smooth 4K” means in Hot Pursuit Remastered

3840×2160 renders four times as many pixels as 1920×1080, so the graphics processor has substantially more work per frame. A game can show an instantaneous 60 FPS counter while still feeling uneven if frame times spike during traffic, weather, races, or police effects. For this reason, use the frame-time graph or the consistency of camera motion as your main test, not a single peak reading.

EA’s published capability is “up to 4K/60 FPS,” not a promise that every desktop or laptop will sustain 60 frames per second at maximum quality. The official product page provides a system-requirements section, but the requirement values are not exposed in the available page text (EA product page). A DSOGaming analysis reported a constant 60 FPS at 4K and maximum settings on its own simulated dual-core configuration; that is one test result, not a transferable hardware specification (DSOGaming performance analysis).

Set the 4K baseline before changing quality

  1. Confirm that Windows and your display are actually running at 3840×2160. In Windows, open Settings → System → Display → Display resolution and select 3840×2160 when the monitor supports it.
  2. Start the game and choose the same 3840×2160 output in its video options. If the game offers a display-mode choice, use the mode that gives you reliable focus and the refresh rate you intend to use.
  3. Set the refresh rate in Windows and in the display’s own on-screen menu to the value you want. A 60 Hz panel cannot show more than 60 refreshes per second, while a faster panel can display additional frames but does not make the GPU render them.
  4. Choose high visual quality as an initial point. This is a practical starting recommendation, not a measured universal preset.
  5. Drive the same short race or route after every change. Keep resolution, display mode, weather and camera consistent so you can attribute a pacing change to the setting you just altered.

Do not change resolution and several quality options together. If you do, you will not know whether a smoother result came from fewer pixels, simpler shadows, lower reflections or a different anti-aliasing mode.

What each graphics option does

DSOGaming’s PC analysis lists texture quality, texture filtering, environment level of detail (LOD), vehicle LOD, shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion and anti-aliasing among the available controls (DSOGaming). PCGamingWiki’s technical summary reports 4K UHD support and FXAA, SMAA and TAA options; the page itself was not independently accessible, so treat that list as a reported technical reference rather than a guarantee that every menu label appears identically on every installation (PCGamingWiki).

Setting What it changes 4K tuning guidance
Texture quality Resolution and detail of surfaces such as road markings, cars and scenery. Keep high when video memory allows. Lower it only after scene-heavy options, because reducing textures can make the image look soft without necessarily fixing a GPU-bound frame-time spike.
Texture filtering Clarity of textures viewed at oblique angles, especially road surfaces stretching into the distance. Retain a high value for a sharper racing line. Reduce only if you need a small amount of additional headroom and can accept blur at grazing angles.
Environment LOD Distance and complexity at which buildings, vegetation and other world geometry are drawn. Lower it when open roads or dense scenery cause drops. The trade-off is earlier pop-in or less distant detail.
Vehicle LOD Detail level used for cars at different distances. Lower it if crowded events produce spikes. You may notice simpler distant vehicles before you see a large improvement in an empty road.
Shadows Resolution and complexity of shadows cast by vehicles and the environment. This is a sensible early reduction for unstable pacing. Move down one step before touching textures, then check whether shadow edges and contact detail remain acceptable.
Reflections Reflected scenery and vehicles on glossy cars and wet-looking surfaces. Reduce this when GPU load is high in traffic or bright urban scenes. Reflections can be visually expensive while being less important to basic road readability.
Ambient occlusion Small-scale contact shading where objects meet, adding depth under cars and around scenery. Lower or disable it if you need another targeted cut. The image may look flatter, particularly around tires, barriers and buildings.
Anti-aliasing Suppresses jagged edges and temporal shimmer. Compare FXAA, SMAA and TAA on your own display. There is no validated universal performance or quality ranking among them.

The order above is editorial guidance, not a published settings benchmark. No available source measures the frame-rate cost of each individual option, so treat every change as a local test on your hardware.

Choose anti-aliasing by image stability and clarity

Mode Possible strength What to inspect
FXAA Often a light-weight way to soften single-frame jagged edges. Look for a softer image on distant signs, guardrails and car silhouettes.
SMAA Can preserve more edge definition while reducing obvious stair-stepping. Check thin geometry and high-contrast wires for remaining shimmer during motion.
TAA Uses information across frames and may calm moving-edge shimmer. Watch for temporal ghosting, trailing detail or a less crisp appearance behind fast cars.

Change only the anti-aliasing mode, then repeat the same drive. A mode that looks best in a still screenshot may feel worse during a high-speed turn, so evaluate while moving.

A repeatable tuning procedure for stable frame delivery

  1. Establish a reference. Record resolution, quality preset, anti-aliasing mode, average FPS and the lowest or most erratic portion of the route. A short, repeatable race is more useful than a one-second menu reading.
  2. Check for a CPU limit. If one or two CPU cores are heavily loaded while GPU usage is well below its limit, lowering reflections or texture quality may have little effect. Close background recording, browser and overlay processes before judging the game.
  3. Reduce reflections one step. Retest the identical route. Keep the change only if frame pacing improves without an unacceptable loss of car-surface detail.
  4. Reduce shadows one step. Test again, paying attention to traffic, barriers and sun transitions where shadow work can change quickly.
  5. Reduce ambient occlusion. This is a targeted way to remove contact shading work; stop if the flatter appearance bothers you more than the original hitch.
  6. Adjust LOD only when the scene demands it. Lower environment LOD for distant scenery stress or vehicle LOD for crowded races. Inspect for pop-in after each change.
  7. Touch textures last. Lower texture quality or filtering only when memory pressure or GPU load remains the problem. Confirm that the resulting image is still sharp enough at 4K.
  8. Set a sensible frame-rate target. If your system cannot sustain 60 FPS, a consistent lower cap can feel better than oscillating between 45 and 60. The correct cap depends on your display refresh and frame-time behavior; no universal cap is established by the available sources.

Acer Nitro 27in 4K 3840x2160 IPS 160Hz DFR 320Hz Gaming Monitor VG270K V4 | 0.5ms, AMD FreeSync Premium, 2xHDMI 2.1, DisplayPort, Speaker, VESA Mountable, Bluelight Filter, Flickerless Technology
  • Quality Visuals: The VG270K 27" IPS monitor with 3840 x 2160 UHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
  • AMD FreeSync Premium Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync Premium, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provides the smoothest gaming experience.
  • Quick Refresh Rate: Different content has different refresh rate and resolution requirements. If you are playing an FPS or racing game, you will need a monitor with a high refresh rate. However, if you are doing office work or streaming videos, a higher resolution will be more beneficial. With DFR technology, users can choose a higher resolution, or a higher refresh rate based on what is suitable for them.
  • Responsive: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter if the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting.
  • ZeroFrame Design: With a Nitro VG270K monitor, you’ll want to see as much of the display as possible. Get more real estate with the near bezel-less design, allowing you to see more and do more. The ZeroFrame design lets you place multiple monitors next to each other for a seamless, almost uninterrupted view.
Goal Starting point Next adjustment if pacing is poor
Image-first 4K High quality, high textures and filtering, preferred AA mode. Lower reflections, then shadows, while preserving textures and LOD.
Balanced 4K/60 attempt High quality with reflections and shadows one step below maximum if the baseline is already uneven. Reduce ambient occlusion, then the LOD option tied to the troublesome scene.
Consistency-first 3840×2160 with moderate shadows, reflections and ambient occlusion; retain the AA mode that gives the cleanest motion on your display. Lower environment or vehicle LOD, then textures only if necessary.

Laptop-specific checks

Many laptops contain integrated and dedicated graphics processors. EA’s general PC graphics guidance recommends checking that a game is using the dedicated GPU and notes that a restart may be required for settings changes to apply (EA Help graphics troubleshooting).

  1. Connect the power adapter and select the laptop maker’s performance power mode.
  2. In Windows, open Settings → System → Display → Graphics, add the game executable if it is not listed, choose Options, select High performance, and save.
  3. Launch the game again. If the selected GPU or graphics options do not take effect, restart Windows before retesting.
  4. Watch temperatures and clocks during a long race. A laptop that begins smoothly and then slows as it heats up is experiencing a cooling or power limit, not necessarily a bad quality preset.

Diagnose common 4K problems

It never reaches 60 FPS

First determine whether the GPU is fully loaded or a CPU thread is saturated. If the GPU is the limit, lower reflections, shadows and ambient occlusion in that order, then test LOD. If the CPU is the limit, visual reductions may not help; close background tasks and use a consistent frame-rate target instead.

The counter says 60, but motion stutters

Check frame times rather than the average. Disable unnecessary overlays and recording, repeat the same route, and look for a recurring hitch at the same location. If the hitch disappears after one setting change, keep that change; do not assume every scene benefits equally.

The image looks blurry

Recheck that output resolution is 3840×2160, then compare FXAA, SMAA and TAA. TAA can appear softer or leave motion trails on some displays, while FXAA can soften edges. Texture quality and filtering are separate controls, so lowering them can also reduce clarity.

Cars or scenery pop in

Raise environment or vehicle LOD one step if performance headroom permits. LOD changes trade distant detail for performance, so inspect the horizon and traffic at speed rather than judging only from the starting grid.

Settings revert or do not apply

Apply the change, exit and relaunch the game. On a laptop, verify the dedicated-GPU assignment first; EA’s troubleshooting guidance specifically notes that a restart may be needed.

Display and hardware expectations

A 4K monitor is useful only if your current display cannot show 3840×2160. The game’s 4K support does not establish that any particular monitor is required, and purchasing one does not guarantee smooth frame delivery. Your result depends on the GPU, CPU, memory, driver, cooling, power limits, display refresh and the frame-rate behavior you consider acceptable.

Because the available performance evidence is an older single-system report rather than a contemporary multi-GPU test, it cannot supply a universal “buy this hardware” recipe. Use your existing system’s repeatable route and frame-time behavior as the deciding evidence.

Bottom line for a smooth 4K setup

Run 3840×2160, start at high quality, and keep the resolution fixed while tuning. When pacing is uneven, reduce reflections, shadows and ambient occlusion one at a time, then adjust the relevant LOD setting; leave textures and filtering high unless testing shows memory or GPU pressure. Compare FXAA, SMAA and TAA by moving-image clarity rather than by an assumed ranking. On laptops, force the dedicated GPU and restart if changes do not apply. This process respects EA’s system-dependent “up to 4K/60 FPS” claim without turning one test result into a promise for every PC.
