The NEOGEO AES+ is a forthcoming, officially licensed revival of SNK’s 1990 Neo Geo AES home console. PLAION REPLAI lists it for release on November 12, 2026, with a standard US price of $249.99. Its central promise is unusual among modern retro consoles: support for both newly produced AES cartridges and original Neo Geo AES cartridges, alongside HDMI output and retained legacy AV connectivity.
That makes the AES+ potentially compelling for AES collectors and CRT enthusiasts. But it is still unreleased, so claims about input latency, video scaling, audio accuracy, build quality, and broad cartridge compatibility remain unverified until independent testing is available.

What is the NEOGEO AES+?
The NEOGEO AES+ is a modern recreation of SNK’s Neo Geo Advanced Entertainment System, or AES. The original AES launched in 1990 as the home counterpart to SNK’s Neo Geo arcade hardware. Unlike most consoles of its era, it was designed to bring arcade games home with exceptionally close conversions, including fighting games, shooters, run-and-gun titles and arcade sports games.

The new system is an officially licensed SNK collaboration with PLAION REPLAI. It is a cartridge-based console, not a mini-console with games built in. The standard package includes the hardware and one controller, but no games. Individual AES+ cartridges are sold separately.

Why the original AES was so unusual
The original Neo Geo AES was effectively a premium arcade machine for the home. Its close relationship to SNK’s arcade hardware gave it an identity that differed from ordinary console ports, but that authenticity came at a price. Contemporary reporting commonly cites a US launch price of $649, while cartridges often cost around $200 or more, according to background coverage from Shacknews and VideoCardz.
As a result, the AES became an enthusiast and collector platform rather than a mass-market rival to the Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis. The AES+ lowers the hardware entry price considerably, but it does not eliminate the original platform’s defining characteristic: the games are still separate, premium physical products.
Is the AES+ emulation, FPGA or original hardware?
PLAION says the AES+ uses re-engineered ASIC chips. The company describes the implementation as neither software emulation nor FPGA-based hardware reproduction, and says it is designed to reproduce the original system’s hardware and software behavior.
The distinctions matter:
- Software emulation reproduces a console’s behavior in software running on another processor.
- FPGA hardware reproduction programs reconfigurable logic to behave like the target hardware. Its flexibility can make updates and corrections easier.
- An ASIC is fixed-function silicon manufactured for a specific implementation. It can provide an efficient, consistent product, but changes after manufacture may be less flexible.
“No emulation” is therefore a description of the implementation, not automatic proof that the system is perfectly identical to 1990 hardware. Accuracy depends on the design and its validation: timing, video, audio, protection behavior, unusual cartridges and edge cases all matter.

One FPGA developer has alleged that the underlying design may be derived from MiSTer-related work and argued that implementing it in ASICs could reduce post-launch flexibility. Notebookcheck reported the dispute, but the allegation has not been independently established by the available evidence. It should be treated as an unresolved technical controversy, not a confirmed defect.
There are currently no independent pre-release measurements proving pixel-perfect video, cycle-perfect timing, identical audio, zero input latency or universal compatibility with every AES cartridge.

PLAION says the AES+ supports both new AES+ cartridges and original Neo Geo AES cartridges. For existing collectors, this is more significant than the console’s appearance: the system could provide a new HDMI-friendly way to use an expensive physical library without relying on the original console.
That remains a manufacturer claim until tested across a wide range of software. Useful testing would include different cartridge revisions, region variants, large-capacity games, homebrew releases, multicarts and modified cartridges.
The AES+ also cannot repair a defective cartridge. Dirty or oxidized contacts, damaged shells, failed ROM chips and poor previous repairs can all prevent an otherwise compatible cartridge from working. Owners should inspect and clean cartridges carefully using appropriate electronics-cleaning methods rather than abrasive materials that can wear contacts.

Modern features
| Feature | What has been announced | What remains unverified |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI | Low-latency HDMI output, advertised up to 1080p | Actual latency, scaling quality and supported modes |
| Legacy display | Original-style AV output is retained for CRT use | Exact signal format, sync requirements and regional cable details |
| Configuration | Language/territory selection, display modes and overclocking | How every game behaves under each setting |
| High scores | Permanent saving with the new Memory Card accessory | Long-term reliability and final accessory availability |
| Controller | Wired 15-pin Arcade Stick included with the standard console | Durability and measured response |
The overclocking option deserves particular caution. It may reduce slowdown in some games, but it can also change timing and behavior in ways that differ from original hardware. For authenticity, use the default speed. Treat overclocking as an optional per-game experiment rather than a universal improvement.
Similarly, “original AV output” does not guarantee plug-and-play operation with every CRT. Buyers may still need to account for regional cable standards, input type, sync requirements and the difference between RGB and composite connections. The final manual should settle those details.
Launch games are sold separately

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The real cost of owning one
The console price is only the beginning if you want a physical library:
- Console only: $249.99
- Console plus one $89.99 cartridge: about $339.98
- Console plus three cartridges: about $519.96
- Anniversary Edition plus one standard cartridge: about $439.98
Those are pre-tax, pre-shipping calculations. Buying all ten announced launch cartridges at $89.99 each would cost approximately $899.90 before tax and shipping—more than three and a half times the standard console price.
The included stick uses the classic 15-pin connector and is described by PLAION as a 1:1 replica. PLAION also says the new stick is backward-compatible with original consoles and original Arcade Sticks are forward-compatible with the AES+. Exact standalone accessory availability and pricing should be confirmed in the relevant regional store listing.

Who should buy the AES+?
It is a strong fit for:
- Existing AES owners who want HDMI connectivity and new hardware.
- Collectors who already own original AES cartridges.
- Players who value physical cartridges and arcade-style controls.
- CRT enthusiasts who want a modern system with legacy video output.
- Buyers who prefer officially licensed hardware over generic emulation devices.
It may be a poor fit for:
- Players who want a large library included out of the box.
- Budget-conscious buyers focused on cost per game.
- Users who want save states, rewind, shaders, screenshots or online play.
- People who own only MVS cartridges.
- Anyone unwilling to buy before independent compatibility testing appears.
If your only goal is playing Metal Slug or The King of Fighters, the AES+ may be difficult to justify at the likely total cost. Software emulation offers a much cheaper and more flexible route, including features such as save states and broad system support. RetroArch is one example of a fundamentally different software-based approach; its official project page is available here.
AES+ versus an original AES
| Original Neo Geo AES | NEOGEO AES+ | |
|---|---|---|
| Authenticity | Original SNK hardware | Modern re-engineered implementation |
| Video | Period-appropriate outputs; modern-TV setup may be difficult | HDMI plus retained legacy AV output |
| Cartridges | Uses existing AES library | PLAION says it supports original and new AES cartridges |
| Maintenance | Aging components and connectors may need repair | New hardware, but long-term reliability is unknown |
| Collector value | Historical hardware and potential market value | New officially licensed product with collectible editions |
The original AES remains the reference point for historical authenticity. The AES+ is more attractive as a practical replacement or companion: it promises modern display connectivity, new production hardware and access to the existing AES cartridge ecosystem. Whether it reproduces the original closely enough for purists can only be answered by testing.

Before treating the AES+ as a definitive replacement for original hardware, independent reviews should examine:
- Compatibility across original cartridge revisions and regions.
- Behavior with unusual, modified, homebrew and multicart software.
- HDMI scaling, image filtering and supported resolutions.
- Input latency compared with original AES hardware.
- Audio timing and sound reproduction.
- Overclocking effects and game-specific side effects.
- CRT signal format and compatibility with different displays.
- Thermal behavior, build quality and controller durability.
- Firmware policy and whether post-launch corrections are possible.
- Availability and long-term production of new cartridges and accessories.
Until those questions are answered, “no emulation,” “arcade-perfect” and “1:1” should be treated as product positioning or manufacturer language rather than independently verified conclusions.
Bottom line
The NEOGEO AES+ could be one of the most interesting modern retro consoles for a specific audience: people who want real AES cartridges, arcade-style controls and modern HDMI connectivity in a new officially licensed system. The $249.99 standard price is far below the original AES’s entry cost, but the $89.99 cartridges mean that a serious collection can become expensive quickly.
Existing AES owners have the clearest reason to consider pre-ordering, especially if HDMI access and new hardware matter more than preserving original SNK silicon. Newcomers should wait for independent reviews unless the cartridge experience itself is the priority. The product’s promise is substantial, but its most important claims—accuracy, latency and broad compatibility—remain promises until the November 12, 2026 release is tested.
