ASUS ROG’s Tandem OLED Monitors Reach 720Hz—but Only at 720p

ASUS ROG’s 720Hz OLED monitor runs at 720p, while its QHD mode reaches 540Hz. Here’s how the PG27AQWP family compares with ROG’s newer 4K Tandem OLED displays.

ASUS ROG’s 720Hz OLED monitor is the ROG Swift OLED PG27AQWP-W, which runs at 2560×1440 and up to 540Hz, or 1280×720 and up to 720Hz. The extreme refresh rate is therefore an esports mode, not 1440p gaming at 720Hz.

ASUS’s wider 2025–2026 Tandem OLED lineup also includes special-edition, 4K/240Hz, 4K/480Hz dual-mode, 280Hz, and Tandem QD-OLED models. The technology promises improvements in brightness, color volume, and panel longevity, but the 720Hz option is aimed at a narrow group of competitive PC players.

Which ASUS ROG monitors are involved?

The announcements cover several distinct products rather than one single 720Hz launch. The PG27AQWP family provides the 720Hz headline feature; newer Tandem RGB OLED and Tandem QD-OLED monitors prioritize resolution, color, or a more balanced refresh rate.

What the 720Hz specification really means

The PG27AQWP-W has two fundamentally different operating modes:

  • QHD mode: 2560×1440 at up to 540Hz.
  • HD mode: 1280×720 at up to 720Hz.

At 720Hz, each refresh interval lasts about 1.39 milliseconds. At 540Hz, it is about 1.85 milliseconds. Those figures describe the display’s refresh interval—not total input-to-photon latency, which also depends on the game engine, CPU, GPU, frame rate, input device, connection, and synchronization settings.

The key compromise is resolution. The 720Hz mode renders a 720p image, reducing sharpness, desktop space, and fine detail. Some secondary coverage has described the mode as 1080p, but ASUS’s product information and documentation identify it as 1280×720 HD. The monitor does not provide 1440p at 720Hz.

A 720Hz panel also cannot create 720 unique frames per second when the system is producing substantially fewer frames. The mode makes the most sense in highly optimized competitive games, at reduced settings, on hardware capable of sustaining exceptionally high frame rates.

  • Immersive QHD OLED Display: 26.5-inch QHD (2560 x 1440) glossy WOLED gaming monitor with 240 Hz refresh rate and 0.03 ms response time for immersive gaming
  • Advanced Cooling and OLED Protection: Highly efficient custom heatsink, advanced airflow design, and ASUS OLED Care functions to reduce the risk of burn-in
  • ROG OLED Anti-flicker Technology: ROG-exclusive OLED Anti-flicker technology helps reduce the flicker during refresh-rate fluctuations
  • Third-Generation WOLED Panel: Third-generation WOLED technology provides brighter full white windows, clearer text, and improved motion clarity
  • Uniform Brightness Setting: Optional uniform brightness setting ensures consistent luminance levels across the display

Who benefits from 720Hz?

The target audience is narrow:

  • Professional and semi-professional FPS players.
  • Competitive players who can regularly exceed 500 frames per second.
  • Players who prioritize motion clarity and latency over resolution.
  • Users willing to switch to 720p for specific esports titles.

For most players, 540Hz at QHD may be the better compromise. It preserves considerably more image detail while still offering an extremely short refresh interval. A 240Hz OLED will generally be more practical for mixed gaming, single-player games, RPGs, strategy games, console use, and everyday work.

What Tandem OLED changes

Tandem OLED uses multiple emissive OLED layers instead of relying on a single emissive stack. ASUS presents the approach as a way to improve brightness, color volume, and longevity compared with earlier OLED designs.

For the PG27AQWP-W, ASUS claims 15% higher peak brightness, 25% greater color volume, and 60% longer OLED lifespan than previous-generation OLED panels. These are manufacturer claims, not universal independent measurements or guarantees of usable service life. Results can vary by picture mode, content, brightness, usage pattern, and comparison baseline.

The lineup also uses different panel labels that should not be treated as interchangeable:

  • Tandem RGB OLED: used by the PG27UCWM and PG32UCWM.
  • Tandem QD-OLED: used by the PG32UCDM Gen 3.

Independent coverage of the PG32UCWM has associated its panel with a newer RGB-stripe structure, but that observation should not be generalized to every Tandem OLED product.

OLED strengths and compromises

OLED remains attractive for gaming because each pixel can control its own light. That enables effectively perfect blacks in ideal conditions, very high contrast, fast pixel response, strong motion performance, and HDR support. The relevant Tandem WOLED models also use a glossy TrueBlack coating, which can enhance perceived contrast in a controlled room.

ASUS lists OLED Care and OLED Care Pro features designed to reduce image-retention and burn-in risk. They do not make burn-in impossible. Static HUDs, taskbars, browser interfaces, and repeated desktop layouts can still matter over long periods.

Other compromises include:

  • Reflections: glossy coatings can be distracting in bright rooms.
  • Brightness behavior: OLED HDR brightness can vary with window size and sustained full-screen content; a claimed peak figure is not the same as measured performance in every scene.
  • GPU demand: maintaining very high frame rates may require reduced settings and a powerful system.
  • Connectivity: the 720Hz models list DisplayPort 2.1. Buyers should verify the exact regional port mode, bandwidth, cable requirements, supported combinations, and any DSC requirement in the final manual.
  • Availability: launch timing and stock can differ by country and by edition.

The PG27AQWP-W lists a 0.02ms GTG response-time specification and G-SYNC compatibility. The 0.02ms figure is ASUS’s panel specification; it should not be read as the complete latency of the monitor and gaming system.

Which ASUS ROG model makes sense?

Choose the PG27AQWP family for extreme esports

Choose the PG27AQWP-W or the Edition 20 variant if competitive FPS performance is the primary goal, the relevant games can run at very high frame rates, and you accept using 720p for the 720Hz mode. The standard model is the more straightforward choice; the Edition 20 retains the same 540Hz QHD and 720Hz HD concept with special-edition styling and ASUS claims of a redesigned thermal system.

Choose the PG27UCWM for a higher-resolution compromise

The PG27UCWM is more balanced for players who want 4K at 240Hz but still want a competitive mode at 1080p and 480Hz. It does not reach 720Hz, but its 4K mode is likely to be more useful for modern games, media, and desktop work.

Choose the PG32UCWM or PG32UCDM Gen 3 for 4K gaming

The 32-inch PG32UCWM targets users who want a larger 4K Tandem RGB OLED display. The PG32UCDM Gen 3 offers 4K at 240Hz with Tandem QD-OLED technology. Neither is the right choice for someone specifically shopping for a 720Hz esports mode.

Choose a 1440p/240Hz OLED for value and versatility

A conventional 1440p/240Hz OLED is likely the better fit for most PC gamers. It provides OLED contrast and fast response without requiring 540–720 frames per second or accepting 720p gaming.

  • Intuitive Monitor Control Software: Exclusive ASUS DisplayWidget Center application allows users to easily access OLED Care Pro functions and adjust monitor settings using a mouse
  • AI-Enhanced Gaming Features: ROG Gaming A.I technology with AI-powered features to enhance users' gaming experience

Choose a fast LCD if burn-in or brightness is the priority

A high-refresh LCD remains preferable for buyers who display static desktop content continuously, need consistent full-screen brightness, want to avoid OLED burn-in concerns, or prefer a lower-cost 360Hz–500Hz monitor.

Availability as of August 18, 2026

The PG27AQWP-W is the original product associated with ASUS ROG’s 720Hz OLED announcement. The PG27AQWP-G Edition 20 was introduced at Computex 2026 as a related special-edition model. ASUS announced the PG27UCWM and PG32UCWM as available from July 15, 2026, but availability remains market-specific. Current prices were not established in the supplied official source set, so buyers should verify local pricing rather than relying on old launch figures or unverified listings.

Verdict

Tandem OLED is the more important development than the 720Hz headline. The layered panel design is intended to improve OLED brightness, color volume, and longevity, while ASUS’s growing lineup separates competitive esports monitors from higher-resolution 4K models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 720Hz PG27AQWP family is a specialist product: its maximum refresh rate requires 1280×720, and its benefits depend on exceptionally high frame rates and a player who can exploit small latency and motion improvements. For most buyers, QHD/540Hz, 4K/240Hz, or 1440p/240Hz OLED will deliver a better balance of clarity, performance, and everyday usefulness.
