What netevent.dll is
netevent.dll is the Net Event Handler, supplied as part of the Microsoft Windows Operating System by Microsoft Corporation. It is primarily a message and resource DLL used by Windows networking and legacy event logging.
Windows event sources can register a message DLL containing the text and formatting resources for event IDs. Event Viewer loads that file to turn an event number into readable information. Microsoft documents this message-file system in its guide to Windows event message files.

That role is important because a record can mention netevent.dll even when the actual problem is:
- A service that failed to start
- The Print Spooler stopping unexpectedly
- A security product that was removed incompletely
- A damaged network component
- A missing executable or driver
- A permissions problem
- A separate application dependency
The correct repair depends on where the message appeared and what the full event record says.
Version and location guide
| Item | What to know |
|---|---|
| File name | netevent.dll |
| Description | Net Event Handler |
| Publisher | Microsoft Corporation |
| Product | Microsoft Windows Operating System |
| Typical location | %SystemRoot%System32 |
| Additional location | %SystemRoot%SysWOW64 on 64-bit Windows |
| Known historical version | 32-bit 5.1.2600.0, approximately 0.21 MB |
| Current version | Varies by Windows release and servicing level |
On 64-bit Windows, System32 conventionally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit compatibility files. A 32-bit application may require the 32-bit copy, while a 64-bit process normally uses the 64-bit copy.
Do not treat the historical version above as a universal version for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Windows system-file versions vary between releases, builds, and servicing branches.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFirst determine which type of error you have
Before replacing anything, identify whether this is a real loader error or an Event Viewer reference.
A program will not start
A true loader error appears when launching an executable and may say:
- “The code execution cannot proceed because netevent.dll was not found”
- “netevent.dll is missing from your computer”
- “netevent.dll could not be loaded”
- “netevent.dll is either not designed to run on Windows”
This can indicate a missing or damaged Windows file, an architecture mismatch, corruption in the application, or a misleading error generated by a program that is failing for another reason.
Event Viewer lists netevent.dll
If the name appears in Event Viewer under a message file, file name, or event-source detail, do not assume it caused the failure. The named service or application is more important than the message DLL.
For example, a Service Control Manager event may identify a security service, Print Spooler, or another service that failed. netevent.dll may only be the library Event Viewer used to display the event text.
A service fails
A service failure can result from a missing executable, damaged driver, denied permissions, an incomplete uninstall, or a dependency that did not start. Repairing netevent.dll alone will not correct those conditions.
Record the following before changing anything:
- Open Event Viewer by pressing Windows key + R, typing
eventvwr.msc, and pressing Enter. - Expand Windows Logs.
- Select System or Application, depending on where the error appears.
- Find the event at the matching time.
- Record the Source, Event ID, service or application name, and the complete description.
- Open the Details tab if the friendly description is unclear.
Do not act on the file name alone.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Windows Update is the safest first repair because protected system files are serviced as part of Windows itself.
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- On Windows 11, select Check for updates. On Windows 10, select Check for updates in Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Install all available quality, cumulative, and servicing updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the affected application again, or check whether the service starts normally.
If the error disappears, no manual DLL replacement is necessary.
If Windows Update fails, repeatedly rolls back, or the error remains, continue with DISM and System File Checker.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. The commands are supported by Microsoft’s System File Checker repair instructions.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows when DISM completes.
DISM may obtain repair files through Windows Update. If it reports that the source files could not be found, do not copy netevent.dll from an unrelated computer. Microsoft documents using a matching Windows repair source with this form:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
The source must match the installed Windows edition and version. An unrelated image can fail or introduce mismatched system files.

After DISM completes, open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no protected-file corruption. Investigate the application, service, or Event Viewer record.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the program or service again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, review the SFC result, and continue to the recovery options below.
Manually repeating SFC without checking what changed rarely helps. Outbyte PC Repair can show a scan of detected Windows issues, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC commands remain the primary repair path.
Fix 3: Repair the affected application or service
If only one program reports the error, Windows may be healthy and the application installation may be damaged.
Recommended Free Tools
Repair an installed application
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu or the program entry.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the program and test it.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the application’s official installer. Do not download netevent.dll separately to satisfy the program.
For a game, use its launcher’s built-in Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-checking function before reinstalling the entire game.
Check the failed service
If Event Viewer identifies a service:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find the service named in the event.
- Double-click it and note its Startup type, Service status, and Path to executable, if displayed.
- Do not change startup settings randomly.
- Search the full event description for a dependency, access-denied message, executable path, or error code.
- Repair or reinstall the software that owns the service.
A Service Control Manager event may name netevent.dll because it is the message provider while the service itself is the failed component.
Fix 4: Review security-product quarantine
An antivirus product can quarantine a Windows file after a false detection, or an incomplete security-software removal can leave a service unable to start.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the application.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries around the time the DLL error began.
- Open a detection to inspect its path, name, and action.
Only restore an item when its path, Microsoft signature, and detection details establish that it is a false positive. Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined item can cause Defender to detect it again unless it is deliberately allowed, and allowing an unsafe file can expose the computer. See Microsoft’s Protection History guidance.
If the file was quarantined by another security product, use that product’s official repair or reinstall procedure. Do not disable protection permanently to force a DLL into the Windows directory.
If netevent.dll exists outside the Windows directory, lacks a valid Microsoft signature, or appeared after a suspicious download, scan the system and investigate that copy separately. Do not overwrite it blindly.

Fix 5: Check architecture and file integrity
A DLL from the wrong Windows release or processor architecture can produce a loader error even when the name is correct.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the expected locations in File Explorer by entering these paths in the address bar:
%SystemRoot%System32
and, on 64-bit Windows:
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64
Right-click any existing copy of netevent.dll, select Properties, and review the Details and Digital Signatures tabs.
Keep these points in mind:
- Do not copy a 32-bit file into the 64-bit system-file location.
- Do not copy an XP-era file into a modern Windows installation.
- Do not assume a file from another Windows version is compatible.
- Do not use a file with an invalid or missing Microsoft signature as a repair source.
- Do not replace a protected system file while Windows is running unless using a documented, matching repair method.
If SFC cannot repair the file, use a verified Windows installation source that matches the installed edition and version. Microsoft’s SFC guidance explains the supported approach for replacing damaged protected files.
Fix 6: Update or repair a related driver only when evidence points to it
A driver is not the normal owner of netevent.dll, but a network or service failure can produce related Event Viewer records. Update a driver only when the full event, Device Manager, or the affected application identifies a hardware or driver problem.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters or the category named by the error.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties and review the General and Driver tabs.
- Record the device name and current driver details.
- Obtain the driver through Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not replace netevent.dll merely because a network adapter has a warning icon.
Hunting through many driver versions can make it difficult to identify what changed. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues, while driver installation is performed by the full version; it is optional, and the hardware manufacturer’s driver remains the appropriate source when a specific device is identified.
Fix 7: Use Windows recovery when repairs do not hold
If DISM and SFC report recurring corruption, or the problem began after an update, cleanup, or disk failure, use Windows recovery rather than manually replacing system files.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.System Restore
System Restore can return system files, drivers, and settings to an earlier restore point without intentionally removing personal documents.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
Microsoft describes this recovery method in its System Restore documentation.
Reinstall the current Windows version on Windows 11
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now, if available.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
Microsoft says this option reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Availability depends on the installation and system configuration. More details are provided in Microsoft’s Windows Update repair reinstall guide.
In-place repair
If the previous options fail, perform an in-place Windows repair using matching installation media. Back up important files first.
Use the installation media from within the running Windows installation, start setup.exe, and choose the option to keep personal files and applications when offered. Do not boot from the media and immediately choose a clean installation unless you intend to erase the installation.

What not to do
Do not download netevent.dll from a DLL website
Random DLL download sites pages can provide:
- The wrong Windows version
- The wrong processor architecture
- A modified or unsigned file
- Malware
- A file that does not match the component store
- A replacement that hides the real service or application failure
There is no legitimate standalone netevent.dll redistributable. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching Windows installation media, System Restore, or an official application installer instead.
Do not run regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 is used to register DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents its purpose in the regsvr32 command reference.
netevent.dll is an event-message and resource DLL, not a normal COM or ActiveX component that you repair by registering. Running this command is normally irrelevant:
regsvr32 netevent.dll
It may produce an entry-point error and does not restore a missing or corrupted Windows component.
Do not install unrelated runtimes
Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, and .NET installers are not general repairs for netevent.dll. Install or repair one of those products only when the actual error names a missing runtime component belonging to it.
Do not delete registry entries
Removing an event-source registry entry can hide the message without repairing the service or application that failed. Diagnose the full event record instead.
FAQ
Is netevent.dll a virus?
The legitimate file is a Microsoft Windows component. Location, digital signature, and context matter. A copy outside the Windows directory or a copy without a valid Microsoft signature deserves investigation and a malware scan.
Should netevent.dll be in System32 or SysWOW64?
It is normally associated with %SystemRoot%System32. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit copy may also be present in %SystemRoot%SysWOW64. The correct copy depends on the requesting process and Windows architecture.
Does Event Viewer naming netevent.dll prove it caused the crash?
No. It may be the message DLL used to translate an event ID into readable text. Check the event source, ID, service name, and complete description.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix the error?
Not generally. netevent.dll belongs to Windows and is not identified as a Visual C++ runtime DLL. Repair Windows with updates, DISM, and SFC first.
Can I register netevent.dll with regsvr32?
Normally no. It is used as an event-message/resource DLL, so registration is not the appropriate repair.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if SFC says it cannot repair the file?
Run DISM first or again, confirm that Windows Update works, and use a matching repair source if Microsoft’s instructions require one. If corruption persists, use System Restore, Windows 11 repair reinstall where available, or an in-place Windows repair.
What should I provide to support if the error continues?
Provide the exact error text, affected executable or service, Event Viewer log, source, Event ID, Windows edition and build, whether the issue occurs at startup or only in one program, and the final DISM and SFC results.
