On 26 September 2022, it said it was establishing an internal studio in Helsinki, Finland, and planned to build it from scratch. The announcement named Marko Lastikka as studio director, but it did not give an opening date or confirm that the studio had begun operating.
What Netflix announced in September 2022
Amir Rahimi, then Netflix vice president of Netflix Game Studios, described the plan as a step toward developing original games for Netflix members. He said: “Today, I’m excited to announce that we are establishing an internal games studio in Helsinki, Finland, with Marko Lastikka as the studio director.”
Netflix also said: “This will be a games studio that we build from scratch, and our second games studio in Helsinki alongside Next Games, which became part of Netflix earlier this year.” The wording matters: the company announced its intention to establish the studio, not a confirmed opening or completed launch.
How it fit alongside Next Games
Next Games was already part of Netflix by the time of the announcement. Netflix presented the new Helsinki operation as a separate, from-scratch studio alongside it. The announcement grouped both with Night School Studio and Boss Fight Entertainment, describing the four studios as having different strengths and focus areas. Netflix cautioned that making a game can take years; it did not announce a release schedule, staffing total, or specific game for the new studio.

Why Netflix was building a games business
Netflix framed the Helsinki plan as part of a broader effort to develop games for its members. Its announced model was games included with membership, without ads or in-app purchases. That approach also appeared in the company’s September 2021 announcement that Night School Studio was joining Netflix. In its Next Games tender-offer document, Netflix said the acquisition would add a core studio in a strategic region and talent market and expand its game-development capabilities.
The company’s strategy therefore combined studios it acquired with at least one it said it would build from scratch. The available announcements describe those plans, but do not provide evidence to compare the studios’ output or commercial success.

How Netflix games broadened after the announcement
Mobile games based on entertainment franchises
Netflix’s 2025 slate announcement highlighted games tied to its entertainment properties. The company said Squid Game: Unleashed was “on pace to be Netflix’s most downloaded game ever,” but supplied no download count. That was Netflix’s claim at the time, not a verified comparative figure or evidence of the game’s current ranking. The slate also included mobile WWE 2K games.
Games for TV, controlled with a phone
In December 2025, Netflix announced TV games that use a phone as the controller, including party titles such as Boggle Party, LEGO Party, Pictionary: Game Night, and Tetris Time Warp. These releases show the offering expanded beyond mobile games, but Netflix’s announcement does not attribute them to the Helsinki studio.

On 13 August 2026, PC Gamer reported that Netflix confirmed Night School’s closure and planned to close Moonloot, which the report described as a Helsinki studio founded by Netflix in 2022. The report also quoted a Netflix spokesperson describing a focus on kids, party, narrative, and mainstream games, and saying the company was excited about cloud and kids games.

That report does not establish that Moonloot is the same entity as the internal Helsinki studio Netflix announced in September 2022. No current official source cited here confirms whether that original studio remains open or what it has released. The defensible conclusion is narrower: Netflix announced plans for a new Helsinki studio in 2022, but the announcement itself was not proof of an opening, and later reporting about Moonloot does not resolve the original studio’s status.
