Neither is the universal winner. The project maintainer’s guidance points toward Classic for Mali or less powerful devices and games such as NASCAR, and toward 4248 for more powerful or Adreno devices and its newer fixes. If you switch branches, use memory-card or in-game saves: save states cannot move between the two bases.
What changed in the June 2025 update?
The June 17, 2025 release covered two NetherSX2 branches rather than replacing one with the other: standard NetherSX2 2.0, based on AetherSX2 4248, and NetherSX2 Classic, based on AetherSX2 3668. Android Authority reported that both received revised touch controls and an updated GameDB conversion script incorporating newer PCSX2 settings with Android-specific overrides. Classic received those upgrades while retaining its older underlying base. For the current releases and instructions, check the NetherSX2-patch releases and NetherSX2 Classic releases; the June 2025 report does not establish which release is newest as of October 8, 2026.

Device and game recommendations are project guidance, not a benchmark or guarantee. Android Authority also reported that older Mali devices may encounter problems when using Vulkan with the 4248 branch. That does not mean every Mali device or game will behave the same way.
Which build should you choose?
Choose Classic if compatibility or performance is better in your game
The maintainer describes Classic as generally more performant in some cases and recommends it for Mali or less powerful devices. NASCAR games are a cited example. Android Authority also described the older base as potentially more stable and noted reported problems with NASCAR and Colin McRae Rally on 4248. If one of those games is your priority, Classic is a reasonable first branch to try—but check the specific game on your device rather than assuming it will fix every issue.

Choose Patched (4248) if your device can use its newer fixes
The maintainer recommends 4248 for more powerful or Adreno devices. Its later graphical and bug fixes may make it the better fit when those improvements matter for your games. The newer base is not automatically more compatible, however; performance and compatibility can vary by game and hardware.
When you are unsure
Start with the branch that best fits your device and the games you play, then consult the project’s README for current guidance. If you experiment with the other branch, protect your saves first. A save that works in one branch may not load in the other.

How to switch branches without losing progress
The official release notes explicitly warn that save states are not compatible between 3668 and 4248. Use a memory-card save or the game’s own in-game save before changing branches; those are the safer ways to preserve progress across the switch.
- Save inside the game. Create an in-game save that is written to the emulator’s memory card before switching.
- Back up your data. Export app data before updating or changing branches. Follow the current project instructions for the version and upgrade path you are using.
- Check the current installation guidance. The README says newer installations may retain settings when installed normally, while older versions may require backup and uninstall steps. Do not assume the same procedure applies to every version.
- Install the intended branch using its current instructions. The release pages are the authoritative place to check for current files and steps: Patched releases and Classic releases.
- Open the game and load its in-game save. Do not rely on a save state created by the other branch.
What you need to run NetherSX2
Android Authority notes that users must provide their own legally acquired PS2 BIOS and game files. NetherSX2’s repository also describes improved controller support for automatic setup, so a compatible Android game controller is an optional way to play with physical controls; no particular model is established as tested here.
