“netui2.dll is missing from your computer,” “netui2.dll was not found,” and “The specified module could not be found” are common forms of the netui2.dll error. Windows may also report that netui2.dll is not designed to run on Windows or contains an error.
The 60-second answer
netui2.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows file named NT LM UI Common Code – GUI Classes. Historical Windows inventories identify it as a 32-bit Windows NT-family component, including Windows XP, where version 5.1.2600.0 was listed at about 0.3 MB.

Do not download a replacement copy from a random DLL website. First identify the program requesting the file, then repair Windows with DISM and SFC if the problem affects Windows or multiple programs. If only one old application fails, repair or reinstall that application from its original media or the publisher’s official installer.

What netui2.dll is
The file belongs to Microsoft Windows Operating System, and its publisher is Microsoft Corporation. Historical Windows documentation places it among Windows NT-era networking and user-interface components.
The commonly indexed file is 32-bit. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit applications run through WOW64 compatibility mechanisms, which can redirect access to the appropriate system directory. That does not mean you should manually copy the DLL into both C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64.
The correct location depends on:
- The Windows version and servicing system
- Whether the calling program is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the file is owned by Windows or the application
- Whether the error concerns the DLL itself or one of its dependencies
A current Windows installation may not contain this legacy DLL at all. An old application that demands it may need its own repair, a vendor update, compatibility support, or a suitable legacy Windows environment.

What the error actually tells you
A loader message naming netui2.dll does not identify the exact cause. The file may be:
- Missing from a protected Windows directory
- Damaged or incorrectly versioned
- Removed by antivirus software
- Needed by an incompletely installed legacy program
- The wrong architecture for the process
- Present, while a dependency required by it is missing
- Being requested by software that is not compatible with modern Windows
“The specified module could not be found” can mean that the named DLL is absent or that another DLL required during loading is absent.
Before replacing anything, determine whether the error appears in one program or throughout Windows.
First identify the failing program
The application that produces the message is the most useful clue.
- Note the full error text and when it appears.
- Check the title bar of the message box.
- Look at the window or taskbar icon.
- If it appears while launching a game, open its launcher and note the game name.
- If it appears during startup, open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps and look for recently installed or unfamiliar software.
- In File Explorer, right-click the program’s shortcut and choose Open file location.
- Record the executable name and folder.
Do not assume that the program named in the message is Windows itself. A legacy application can request a Windows DLL even when the operating system is not the damaged component.
Also check whether:
- Only one application fails
- Several unrelated applications fail
- Windows features or sign-in components fail
- The issue began after an update, cleanup utility, antivirus detection, failed installation, disk problem, or malware incident
That distinction determines which repair path to use.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Updates can restore servicing components and improve compatibility, although there is no evidence that a current Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET package specifically supplies netui2.dll.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if the system does not immediately require it.
- Start the affected program again.
If the error remains limited to one old application, continue with the application repair steps below. Do not install unrelated runtime packages solely because the message names a DLL.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and System File Checker
Use this path when Windows components fail, more than one program reports loading errors, or the file appears to be missing from a protected Windows location.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when a suitable cached version is available.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- In the same elevated window, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the program again.
Possible SFC results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows did not find protected-file corruption.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the application.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and run SFC again.
- Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: restart Windows and repeat the command from an elevated Command Prompt.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
C:RepairSourceWindows is only a placeholder. The source must match the installed Windows edition and build. Do not substitute an arbitrary Windows folder or a downloaded DLL.

Repeatedly hunting through system directories and guessing which protected file changed can make diagnosis harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it identifies; its repair function requires the full version, and it is not a substitute for repairing the application that specifically owns the failure.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the application that reports the error
If only one program fails, the application installation is the leading suspect. This is especially true for an old game, utility, or business program installed from older media.
Modern Windows applications
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the same page and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local settings or data.
Traditional desktop programs
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer’s instructions.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Test the application.
Not every installer provides a repair option. If repair is absent, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the publisher’s official installer or the original installation media.

This is safer than copying netui2.dll into the game directory.
If the application is very old, check whether its publisher provides a patch or compatibility guidance. A modern Windows installation may not support the program’s original assumptions, even if a downloaded DLL appears to remove the first error.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Microsoft Defender or another security product may have quarantined a file. Do not immediately restore it.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any detection associated with
netui2.dllor the affected application. - Check the file path and detection details.
Restore a file only when all of the following are true:
- It is in the expected Windows or application directory.
- The application is known and trusted.
- The detection is confirmed to be a false positive.
- You have checked the file’s Microsoft signature or otherwise verified its provenance.
If the file is in an unexpected temporary folder, a user-profile subfolder, or an unfamiliar application directory, do not restore it merely because its name is correct. Run a full security scan and reinstall the affected software from a trusted source.
Malware can use the name of a legitimate Windows DLL. A correct filename alone does not prove authenticity.
Fix 5: Check the file path, signature, and architecture
If a copy of netui2.dll already exists, inspect it rather than replacing it.

Historical records associate the file with Microsoft Corporation, the description NT LM UI Common Code – GUI Classes, and Windows system directories. The frequently quoted 5.1.2600.0 version is associated with Windows XP-era inventories, not a universal Windows 10 or Windows 11 version.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit process. Conversely, do not assume that placing a 64-bit file in a 32-bit application folder will work. On 64-bit Windows, WOW64 handles many 32-bit application requests automatically. Manual copying can bypass Windows servicing and create a worse architecture mismatch.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall related drivers only when evidence points there
A driver is not the normal source of netui2.dll, but a failed update or damaged system component can produce broader startup problems. Use drivers as a targeted troubleshooting step, not as a reason to install random packages.
First check Windows Update:
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Open Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates if available.
- Install only drivers appropriate for the hardware.
- Restart Windows.
You can also inspect a device directly:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters or Network adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
For a failed recent driver, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available. Obtain replacement drivers from the hardware manufacturer or the computer maker.
Manually identifying a stale driver among many devices can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; the full version performs driver installation, but a driver update is not the definitive fix when one legacy application owns the netui2.dll error.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver installation, Windows change, cleanup operation, or software installation and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the programs and drivers that may be removed or rolled back.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restore.
System Restore normally does not remove personal documents, but it rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. If the error started after malware activity, do not rely on System Restore alone. Scan the system and repair or reinstall affected software.
Why regsvr32 is not the answer
Do not run this as a routine repair:
regsvr32 netui2.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain ActiveX or COM components. There is no verified evidence that netui2.dll is a self-registering component.
A registration error does not prove that the DLL is corrupt. It may simply mean that the file does not implement the function that regsvr32 expects. Windows system repair and application repair are the appropriate paths.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not download an isolated netui2.dll file
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware disguised as a system file
- The wrong Windows version
- The wrong architecture
- A modified or unsigned file
- A copy with missing dependencies
- A file that hides the actual application or Windows problem
There is no verified official Microsoft standalone download page for netui2.dll. Safe sources are Windows servicing tools, Windows installation or recovery media, Windows Update, the original application installer, and the application publisher’s official repair process.
Never place a downloaded DLL into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory just because the filename matches.
When Windows Features and Visual C++ are relevant
Turning Windows Features on or installing a runtime can be correct for a different error, but neither is established as the source of netui2.dll.
Do not enable random features or install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET packages merely because a program displays a DLL error. Use those components only when the application’s official documentation specifically requires them or the error names a component belonging to them.
For a legacy application, the more defensible order is:
- Verify or repair the application.
- Install its official patch.
- Run Windows repair commands.
- Check compatibility and architecture.
- Install only documented prerequisites.
- Consider a supported legacy environment if the program cannot run on modern Windows.
If the error still persists
If DISM, SFC, and application repair do not resolve the problem:
- Record the exact executable that fails.
- Record the full path of the application and any
netui2.dllcopy found. - Check whether the file is signed.
- Review Event Viewer for errors at the same time:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for application errors or side-by-side loader errors.
- Use a reputable dependency-analysis tool to determine whether another required module is missing.
- Test whether unrelated applications fail.
- Review Windows Security Protection history again.
- Back up important data before more invasive repair.
If the system drive may be failing, address that before repeatedly repairing files. If Windows remains broadly damaged, use Settings > System > Recovery and review the available recovery options. Windows recovery, Reset this PC, installation media, or a clean reinstall may be appropriate after backing up personal data.
A very old application may simply be unsupported on Windows 10 or Windows 11. In that case, the correct solution may be a vendor update, a compatible installation, or a supported virtual machine rather than a replacement DLL.
FAQ
Is netui2.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is identified as a Microsoft Windows Operating System component named NT LM UI Common Code – GUI Classes.
Is netui2.dll part of Visual C++?
There is no verified evidence that it belongs to a Visual C++ Redistributable package. Do not install Visual C++ solely to repair this file.
Is netui2.dll part of DirectX or .NET?
There is no verified evidence tying it to DirectX or .NET.
Should I put it in System32 or SysWOW64?
Do not choose a directory manually. The commonly indexed file is 32-bit, but the correct location depends on Windows servicing, application architecture, and file ownership. Let Windows repair protected files or let the application installer restore application files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs the known 5.1.2600.0 version current?
No conclusion about current Windows versions should be drawn from it. That version is associated with Windows XP-era file inventories.
Why does the message say a module could not be found when the file exists?
The loader may be unable to find a dependency required by netui2.dll, or the existing file may be incompatible with the calling process.
Does registering the DLL fix it?
Usually not. regsvr32 applies only to DLLs that implement the required registration entry point, and netui2.dll has not been verified as one of them.
What is the safest first step?
Identify the program that reports the error. Then use DISM and SFC for a Windows-wide problem, or repair and reinstall the one affected application when the failure is isolated.
