msisip.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component called MSI Signature SIP Provider. If msisip.dll is missing, was not found, or reports a bad image, repair Windows and the affected installer rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file belongs to Windows Installer – Unicode, a Windows component developed by Microsoft Corporation. It helps Windows Installer and Windows trust services identify and verify digital signatures on MSI and MSP packages. The filename alone cannot identify which application triggered the error.

What msisip.dll does
The “SIP” in MSI Signature SIP Provider refers to a Subject Interface Package or provider. Microsoft documents SIPs as providers that help WinVerifyTrust identify and verify signatures for supported file types.
That makes msisip.dll part of the installer and signature-verification path. It may be involved when Windows:

It is not normally an application runtime that you install separately. Windows Installer 5.0 is built into Windows 7 and later, and Microsoft does not provide a separate Windows Installer 5.0 redistributable.
Where msisip.dll normally belongs
On most Windows installations, the native system copy is located under:
%WINDIR%System32
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit processes use Windows file-system redirection and may access the 32-bit system components under:

The exact file presence, version, and size depend on the Windows build and system architecture. Do not treat a version or size reported for one Windows release as a universal reference.
A copy beside an unrelated application, inside a temporary directory, or in a download folder should be investigated rather than trusted automatically.
Errors associated with msisip.dll
You may see messages such as:
msisip.dll is missingThe file msisip.dll is missingmsisip.dll was not foundThe code execution cannot proceed because msisip.dll was not foundC:WindowsSystem32msisip.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error
Installer signature problems can also appear as:
Generic Trust FailureThe form specified for the subject is not one supported or known by the specified trust provider
A trust-provider error does not prove that msisip.dll itself is defective. The installer package, certificate chain, Windows servicing state, or another trust component may be responsible.
Start with the fixes below in order.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes, depending on pending updates
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Windows Update can replace damaged protected components and correct servicing or certificate problems that affect installer verification.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Windows Update. In Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the application or installer again.
If the error disappears, the problem was likely related to a damaged or outdated Windows component. If Windows Update fails, repeatedly rolls back, or reports corruption, continue with the next fix.
Microsoft’s Windows Update instructions cover the supported update process.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
Use DISM first, then System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC uses, so running SFC first can leave it without a usable repair source.

Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Then run:
sfc /scannow
Do not close the window while either scan is running. The process can appear to pause for a while.
Understand the result
SFC may report that:
- It found no integrity violations
- It found corrupt files and successfully repaired them
- It found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them
Restart Windows after the commands complete, then retry the installer.
If SFC repaired msisip.dll or related Windows files, the affected setup program should proceed normally after the restart. If SFC could not repair everything, run Windows Update again and repeat the DISM and SFC sequence once. Persistent corruption requires Windows recovery or an in-place repair rather than a manually copied DLL.

When repeatedly hunting through system folders and rerunning SFC or DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported problems and show what needs attention; the free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the proper repair path for a damaged system component.
Microsoft’s System File Checker procedure explains the DISM-before-SFC order and the possible results.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application
Time needed: 5 to 30 minutes
If Windows reports the error only when one application is installed, patched, or launched, the application’s installer transaction may be damaged. The DLL name does not identify the application.
Use Windows’ built-in repair option
For a compatible desktop application on Windows 11:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair if available.
- Start the application again.
The repair option may preserve the application’s data and settings. If it is unavailable or does not help, use the program’s own Repair, Verify files, or maintenance option.

If repair fails:
- Download a fresh installer from the software publisher’s official website.
- Remove the damaged application through Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or through Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the fresh installer as an administrator if the publisher’s instructions require it.
- Retry the installation.
Use a current installer that matches your Windows architecture. If only one setup package fails while other MSI installations work, suspect the package, its certificate, or its installation files before suspecting Windows.
Microsoft provides guidance for program installation and removal problems.
Fix 4: Check whether security software quarantined the file
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Windows Security or another antivirus product may quarantine a damaged or suspicious copy. Do not restore a quarantined DLL simply because an application requests it.
- Open Start.
- Type
Windows Security. - Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections for
msisip.dll. - Open the detection details and check its location and classification.
A legitimate system copy should normally be in a Windows system directory and carry a valid Microsoft digital signature. If the detected copy came from an application folder, temporary directory, or download location, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.
If you confirm that a genuine Microsoft-signed system file was quarantined, follow Microsoft’s recovery guidance and then repair Windows with DISM and SFC. Restoring the file without addressing the underlying issue may cause it to be quarantined again.
Microsoft explains Protection History in its Windows Security documentation.
Fix 5: Verify the file location and digital signature
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
This check helps distinguish a missing Windows component from an unsafe or mismatched copy.
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%WINDIR%System32in the address bar. - Search for
msisip.dll. - If you are using 64-bit Windows, also inspect
%WINDIR%SysWOW64when the failing program is 32-bit. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.
Do not replace a file in System32 or SysWOW64 with one copied from another computer. Even two machines running the same broad Windows edition may have different build, servicing, architecture, or signature states.
Recommended Free Tools
The two folders also do not mean that you should copy the same file into both locations. Windows uses file-system redirection for 32-bit processes on 64-bit systems. Microsoft describes this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.
Fix 6: Check the installer’s architecture and trust status
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL as if it were interchangeable, and the reverse is also true. A manually replaced DLL can therefore produce a bad-image or load error even when the filename is correct.

For an installer-specific failure:
- Obtain the installer again from the software publisher.
- Save it to a local folder rather than running it from a temporary browser location.
- Right-click the installer and select Properties.
- On the Digital Signatures tab, inspect the signer if one is present.
- On the General tab, check for an Unblock option and use it only when you trust the file’s source.
- Confirm that the installer supports your Windows architecture.
- Run the setup again.
For a message involving trust verification, the certificate, installer package, or Windows trust infrastructure may be at fault. msisip.dll may be part of the verification path, but the error is not proof that this file needs replacement.
A current installer from the publisher and a fully updated Windows installation are safer than trying to bypass signature checks.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair
Time needed: 2 minutes to verify, longer if further repair is required
Avoid starting with:
regsvr32 msisip.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose and correctly implement the DllRegisterServer entry point. It is not a universal command for repairing missing or corrupted DLLs. Manually registering a protected Windows signature provider can alter registry state or produce an error that does not diagnose the original problem.
Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC to restore a Windows component. Use the application’s official repair or reinstall procedure for an application-specific failure.
Microsoft documents the DllRegisterServer requirement and common Regsvr32 errors.
Fix 8: Use Windows Features only for a feature-specific setup problem
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Turning Windows features on or off does not normally restore msisip.dll. Do not enable random features in response to this filename.
It can still be useful to verify a feature when the failed setup explicitly requires one:
- Open Start.
- Type
Windows Features. - Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Review the feature named by the application’s official requirements.
- Enable or disable only that feature.
- Select OK.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
- Run the application’s installer again.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because an error mentions msisip.dll. Those are separate dependency systems. A .NET installer that reports a trust-provider failure may need Windows servicing or signature repair instead.
Fix 9: Update a device driver only when its installer is failing
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
Driver repair is not a primary fix for msisip.dll. Consider it only when the error appears specifically while installing a printer, graphics driver, device utility, or other hardware package.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start.
- Type
Device Manager. - Open Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or use the hardware manufacturer’s official driver package.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Retry the device installer.
Do not uninstall unrelated drivers or use driver changes as a substitute for DISM and SFC.
When checking dozens of device drivers manually is the main obstacle, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported driver problems and identify outdated entries; the free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and the hardware manufacturer’s driver plus application reinstall remains the definitive fix for a device-specific installer.
Fix 10: Use System Restore after a recent system change
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
If msisip.dll began failing after an update, driver installation, program installation, or system modification, System Restore can roll Windows back to an earlier restore point.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the applications, updates, and drivers that may be removed.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.
System Restore normally does not remove personal files, but it can remove recently installed applications, updates, or drivers.

Most likely causes of an msisip.dll error
| What you see | Likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|---|
Error points to System32 during several installers |
Windows system-file or component-store corruption | Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| Error appears with one MSI or MSP package | Damaged installer transaction or package | Download a fresh official installer and repair or reinstall the application |
| File is listed in Protection History | Antivirus quarantine or removal | Verify location and signature, then repair Windows |
| Bad-image error after manual DLL replacement | Wrong architecture or mismatched build | Remove the replacement and restore through Windows servicing |
| Generic trust failure | Certificate, package, servicing, or trust-provider problem | Update Windows and obtain a current signed installer |
| Problem began after a system change | Recent update, driver, or installer | Use System Restore |
Safe sources and unsafe shortcuts
The safe sources for this component are Windows servicing, Windows Update, Windows recovery, and the official installer for the application that failed. Microsoft does not provide a standalone Windows Installer 5.0 download for modern Windows.
Do not download msisip.dll from random DLL sites or copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. The replacement may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different Windows build, lack a valid signature, or fail to repair the actual component-store problem.
Quick diagnostic checklist
Before making changes, note:
- Is the error shown by Windows itself, or only by one application?
- Does the path point to
System32,SysWOW64, an application folder, or a temporary folder? - Is the message about a missing file, a bad image, or trust verification?
- Does a valid Microsoft digital signature appear in the file properties?
- Is
msisip.dlllisted in Windows Security Protection History? - Did the problem begin after an update, driver, or installer change?
- Do other MSI-based installations work?
A system-path error affecting multiple installers points toward Windows repair. A failure limited to one program points toward that program’s installer or package. A trust message requires certificate and package investigation and should not automatically be labeled a missing-DLL problem.
FAQ
Is msisip.dll legitimate?
Yes. msisip.dll is a Microsoft Corporation component described as MSI Signature SIP Provider and associated with Windows Installer – Unicode.
Is msisip.dll part of Windows?
Yes. It is associated with Windows Installer and supports signature-provider operations used during Windows trust verification.
Can I download msisip.dll separately?
No. Do not use a standalone DLL download as the repair method. Restore the component through Windows Update, DISM, SFC, recovery, or an in-place Windows repair.
Which application needs msisip.dll?
The filename alone cannot identify a specific application. The most plausible trigger is a Windows Installer-based setup program, patch, or application validating a signed MSI or MSP package.
Should I run regsvr32 msisip.dll?
Not as a general fix. regsvr32 applies to DLLs that properly implement DllRegisterServer; Windows servicing is the appropriate first-line method for this component.
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not merely because an error mentions msisip.dll. Those packages address different dependencies. Repair Windows or the affected installer first.
Recommended Free Tools
What if DISM and SFC succeed but the installer still fails?
Download a fresh installer from the publisher, verify its signature and architecture, review setup logs, and retry from a local folder. If the failure remains limited to that application, its package or installer configuration is the more likely cause.
Should I replace the file in System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Windows manages these protected locations and redirects 32-bit processes on 64-bit systems. A manual replacement can create an architecture or servicing mismatch.
