Its dialogue-light storytelling, expressive animation and Berlinist score do the emotional heavy lifting; the platforming and combat give the journey shape without making it a demanding action game. That combination can be deeply affecting, though players looking for intricate combat may find the fighting too simple and repetitive.
What is Neva about?
Developed by Nomada Studio and published by Devolver Digital, Neva follows Alba through a world being corrupted and destroyed. She is joined by a wolf, and the relationship between them changes as the cub grows up and the pair learn to rely on one another. The official site describes the game’s themes as “love identity growth trust courage.”

The story is told almost entirely without dialogue. TIME notes that Alba calls the wolf’s name, but otherwise the game lets animation, music and the changing world communicate what is happening. Its journey moves through four seasons, giving the story a visible sense of passage as well as emotional change. This is why the connection between Alba and Neva matters more than any plot explanation: the game asks you to read their behavior and the world around them.
The result is closer to an action-platforming adventure than a pure walking simulator. You move, jump, explore, solve light puzzles and fight, while the story remains the reason those actions matter.
#1 Best Overall
- Embark on a perilous journey through a once-beautiful world as it slowly decays
- Help one another to brave increasingly dangerous situations.
- An emotionally charged action-adventure from the visionary team behind the critically acclaimed GRIS.
- Languages: Voices: N/A; Subtitles: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese
How does it play?
Neva balances platforming, exploration and combat rather than building around any one of them. MeriStation’s PS5 review describes it as a more traditional action platformer than GRIS, with a stronger emphasis on action. The movement and encounters provide momentum between story beats, but combat is deliberately light compared with mechanically demanding action-platformers.
Combat is the main caveat
MeriStation praised the overall mix but found the combat simple and repetitive, with occasional frustrations around hitboxes and controls. TIME likewise praised the game while noting the simplicity of its fighting. Those are reviewers’ assessments, not a guarantee that every player will react the same way, but they point to the right expectation: the fights support the adventure rather than serve as a deep combat system.

If you want a challenging game built around mastering enemy patterns and layered combat options, Neva may feel thin. If you want approachable action alongside traversal and a strong emotional through-line, its combat is less likely to get in the way.
Why does Neva feel so emotional?
The game’s visual storytelling, music and central relationship work together. The animated art gives Alba and the wolf room to express care, fear and growing independence without lengthy explanation, while the changing seasons make the passage of time part of the presentation. TIME specifically praised the score by Berlinist, the visuals and the bond at the center of the story.

- Neva: Devolver Deluxe will include the following exclusive items, besides the physical game: A stunning softbound 88-page artbook showcasing concept art and game art; A copy of the game’s original soundtrack by Berlinist, on a CD and as digital download; A collector’s tuck-in box housing all the contents.
The bond is also dynamic rather than static: Neva changes from a cub into an adult, and the partnership develops with that growth. That structure gives the adventure an emotional arc even when the story is not spelling out its meaning in dialogue. TIME placed Neva fifth on its list of the ten best games of 2024. Devolver Digital’s 2024 annual report recorded an average Metacritic score of 87 for the game; that is a publisher-reported figure from 2024, not a current score.
How long does Neva take?
MeriStation estimates a first playthrough at six to seven hours. Treat that as one reviewer’s estimate, not a fixed completion time: individual pace, difficulty choice and time spent finding optional collectibles can change how long the journey takes.

Which platforms and edition should you choose?
At launch on October 15, 2024, the publisher listed Neva for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. The official site also links to the Mac App Store. Store listings and edition availability can differ by region, so check the platform’s local storefront before buying.
| Option | What it includes | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Base game | Neva, the main adventure. | Players who want Alba and the wolf’s story without the separate prequel add-on. |
| Complete Edition | The base game plus Neva: Prologue, according to the cited Nintendo and US PlayStation Store listings. | Players who want the additional prequel story as well. Confirm the contents on your regional store page. |
Neva: Prologue follows Alba and the wolf cub before the main story. Nintendo’s listing describes three locations, new mechanics, enemies, challenges and boss encounters, and says the add-on is designed for players who have completed the main game. Nintendo lists a Complete Edition for Switch released February 19, 2026; the US PlayStation Store also lists a PS4/PS5 Complete Edition and the add-on separately. These store pages establish those offerings, not universal availability in every territory.
Best Value
- Neva is an emotionally charged action-adventure from the visionary team behind the critically acclaimed GRIS.
- Neva chronicles the story of Alba, a young woman bound to a curious wolf cub following a traumatic encounter with dark forces. Together, they embark on a perilous journey through a once-beautiful world as it slowly decays around them.
- Their relationship evolves as they learn to work together, helping one another to brave increasingly dangerous situations. The wolf grows from a rebellious cub to an imposing adult while seeking to forge her own identity, testing Alba’s love and their commitment to one another.
- As the cursed world threatens to overwhelm them, Alba and her courageous companion will do whatever it takes to survive and make a new home, together.
A physical edition is identified in February 2026 coverage by Tom’s Guide, but that report does not establish current stock or the exact contents of every platform’s retail listing. If physical ownership matters, search for the platform-specific Neva edition and verify the seller, edition and current inventory before purchasing. The Nintendo Complete Edition page is a digital listing, not evidence of a physical release.
For difficulty, Nintendo’s listing includes selectable difficulty, and Tom’s Guide describes a Story Mode in which Alba cannot die. Modes and controls can vary by version, so check the listing or in-game options for the platform you plan to play.
Should you play Neva?
Neva is a strong fit if you want a short, visually expressive adventure whose emotional center is the changing bond between a person and an animal companion. Its wordless storytelling and score carry more weight than its combat, and the platforming gives the journey a clear rhythm. The main reason to hesitate is mechanical: the fighting may feel repetitive if you expect combat to be the game’s deepest or most rewarding system.
Nomada Studio discussed the game’s parenthood theme in a September 2024 MeriStation interview, connecting it to art director Conrad Roset’s experience of becoming a parent. The interview also said that adding death, more complex movement, the wolf companion and combat made development more challenging than GRIS, and clarified that the two games do not share a universe.
