nexpsrc.dll is the NEC Color MultiWriter Class Driver String Resource DLL. It is a resource file used by a Windows printer-driver package for NEC Color MultiWriter printers, commonly associated with the prnnecl2.inf package.
If Windows reports that nexpsrc.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the most likely problem is an incomplete, damaged, removed, or mismatched NEC printer-driver installation. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, game file, or general-purpose application DLL.

Historical file inventories list different package versions and architectures. Treat those records as identification clues, not as a guarantee that one particular file version belongs on every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.
Fastest fix: remove and reinstall the printer
Microsoft’s supported printer repair path is to remove the affected printer and add it again with Windows Update or the manufacturer’s complete driver package.

1. Remove the printer
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the NEC printer associated with the error.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
Removing the queue does not always remove the driver package from the Driver Store. That is acceptable at this stage. First test a clean printer installation.
2. Add the printer again
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait while Windows searches for the printer.
- If it appears, select Add device and complete setup.
- If it does not appear, select Add manually.
- Choose the option matching your connection, such as a network printer, USB printer, or manually specified local printer.
- When Windows asks for a driver, select Windows Update to refresh the built-in driver list.
- Select the NEC Color MultiWriter driver that matches the printer model.
- If Windows Update does not provide the correct driver, choose Have Disk and select the complete driver package obtained from NEC’s official printer support channel.
- Print a test page from the printer’s properties.
The repair worked if the printer installs without the DLL error, the queue opens normally, and a test page prints. If the same message returns immediately, the old driver package may still be damaged or the selected package may not match the printer.

Update or reinstall the printer driver
A driver update is appropriate when the error began after a Windows update, printer change, or failed installation.
Use Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Other devices.
- Locate the NEC printer or an entry with a warning icon.
- Right-click it and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Install the driver Windows finds.
- Restart the computer.
- Print a test page.
If Windows says the best driver is already installed but the error continues, reinstall the device instead:
- In Device Manager, right-click the NEC printer.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Printers & scanners and add the printer again.
Do not choose a generic driver merely because it installs without an error if it removes important printer functions. Use the model-specific NEC package when the built-in class driver does not work.

Check the architecture
Both 32-bit and 64-bit printer-driver packages exist. A 64-bit Windows installation can still support a 32-bit legacy printer driver, so do not select a package based only on the bitness of the application showing the message.
Check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Find System type.
- Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
- Select a driver package that supports that Windows installation and the exact NEC printer model.
Do not copy an x86 nexpsrc.dll into an x64 driver package, or the reverse. The printer driver, its resource files, and its dependencies must come from the same complete package.
Remove a damaged Driver Store package
Use this step only when removing and reinstalling the printer did not help. Driver Store deletion affects the whole package and can affect other printer queues.
Identify the package
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
pnputil /enum-drivers
- Review the published driver packages.
- Look for the NEC Color MultiWriter package or the package associated with
prnnecl2.inf. - Note its published name, which will look similar to
oem##.inf.
Do not remove a package simply because it contains a similar name. Confirm that no working NEC printer still depends on it.
Remove the package
After confirming the package:
pnputil /delete-driver oem##.inf /uninstall
Replace oem##.inf with the actual published name shown on your computer.
Restart Windows, then reinstall the printer through Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. If PnPUtil reports that the package is in use, remove the related printer queues first. If it refuses to remove the package, do not force deletion blindly. Microsoft documents Driver Store removal and PnPUtil syntax.

Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use Windows component repair when the printer reinstall fails, other Windows files are also damaged, or the error started after broader system corruption.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the NEC printer driver again.
- Print a test page.
DISM should run before SFC because it can repair the component source that SFC uses. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run it once more after DISM completes. Microsoft explains this sequence in its System File Checker repair instructions.

Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a driver resource file, particularly after a failed update or package change.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
nexpsrc.dll, the NEC printer driver, or the printer package. - Do not restore the file automatically.
- Verify that it belongs to the expected NEC/Microsoft printer package.
- If the package is legitimate, reinstall the complete driver from the official source rather than restoring only the DLL.
- Run a full security scan.
If the message appears when an unrelated executable starts, investigate that executable separately. A suspicious program naming nexpsrc.dll does not prove that the printer driver caused the problem.
What not to do
Do not download the DLL separately
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible version, or a file that does not match the rest of the driver package. Replacing one file often leaves the actual Driver Store problem untouched.
The safe source is the complete Windows printer-driver package delivered through Windows Update or the printer manufacturer’s official support channel.

Do not copy it into System32 or an application folder
nexpsrc.dll is normally managed as part of the printer-driver package. It may be stored in the protected Driver Store or a printer-driver directory. Its absence from C:WindowsSystem32 is not, by itself, an error.
Manual copying can create servicing, signature, path, and architecture problems. Restore the complete package instead.
Do not use regsvr32
Do not run:
regsvr32 nexpsrc.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. A printer string-resource DLL is not a self-registering component simply because it ends in .dll. Reinstalling the printer package is the correct repair.

There is no verified reason to install Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or optional Windows Features for this file. Those packages do not replace the NEC printer-driver resource package.

If no NEC printer is installed but the error appears during every boot:
- Check Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners for stale queues.
- Remove old NEC queues.
- Open Task Manager > Startup apps and look for entries related to old printer software.
- Review Task Scheduler for clearly identified remnants of a removed printer utility.
- Do not delete entries merely because their names are unfamiliar.
- Run a full security scan if an unrelated application or unknown executable references the DLL.
Multiple old NEC queues can reference different driver-package copies. Removing the visible printer may not remove every package, which is why PnPUtil may be necessary.

Frequently asked questions
Is nexpsrc.dll legitimate?
Yes, when it is part of the NEC Color MultiWriter printer-driver package supplied through Windows or the manufacturer’s driver distribution. Its name alone does not prove that every copy on a computer is legitimate.

It is distributed through Windows printer-driver packages, including an OS-bundled NEC class driver. That does not mean it must be present on every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.
Does it belong to a game?
There is no verified evidence that it belongs to a particular game or application. If a game reports it, inspect the executable and installation history instead of assuming the game needs a printer DLL.
Should I register it?
Normally no. nexpsrc.dll is a printer-driver resource file, not a typical self-registering COM component.
What if the message says “The specified module could not be found”?
That message can mean the named DLL is missing, but it can also indicate a missing dependency or damaged driver-package path. Reinstall the complete printer package rather than replacing only the named file.

What should I give support if nothing works?
Provide the exact error text, Windows edition and build, NEC printer model, whether the printer was recently removed or updated, and the file path shown in the message.
