Start with this quick diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, note:
- Which program reports the error
- Whether it appears during Windows startup or only when opening one application
- Whether the problem began after Windows Update, antivirus activity, cleanup software, or an interrupted upgrade
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The exact wording, such as “bthsqm.dll was not found” or “could not be loaded”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe file name bthsqm.dll refers to a Windows Bluetooth SQM Agent component. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET redistributable.
The safest first repair is to service Windows itself with DISM and SFC. Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL or copying one into a system folder.

What bthsqm.dll is
Public file records identify bthsqm.dll as Bluetooth SQM Agent, associated with Microsoft Windows. A Microsoft-associated Windows 8 DLL list also includes BthSQM.dll, supporting that this is a genuine Windows component rather than a randomly generated filename.
The strongest publicly indexed records are older Windows 8 and Windows 8.1-era entries. They include 32-bit-labelled files with versions 6.2.9200.16384 and 6.3.9600.16384. Those records do not prove which binary is present on every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation, nor do they establish a universal System32 or SysWOW64 location.

That distinction matters. An old file table is not a safe source for replacing a current Windows component.
There is also no verified Microsoft page offering bthsqm.dll as a standalone redistributable. No particular game, application, Visual C++ package, DirectX package, or .NET runtime has been verified as the official source of this file.
What the error usually means
You may see reported variants including:
- “The program can’t start because bthsqm.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “bthsqm.dll was not found.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library bthsqm.dll.”
- “bthsqm.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are common reported error forms, not necessarily official Microsoft wording.

The message does not always mean the named file is the only problem. “The specified module could not be found” can indicate that a dependency required by the application is missing even when bthsqm.dll itself exists. A “not designed to run on Windows” message can indicate corruption, an architecture mismatch, or an incompatible binary.
Likely triggers include:
- A damaged or deleted protected Windows component
- An incomplete Windows update
- Antivirus quarantine or a false positive
- Disk or filesystem corruption
- A damaged application that calls the component
- Malware or an unauthorized system modification
- A recent driver, update, or system change
Fix 1: Install updates and restart
Servicing problems are often corrected by completing Windows Update before running repair commands.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist.
- Try the affected application again.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install pending updates.
- Restart and test the application.
If the error remains, continue with component repair. Do not assume that reinstalling the application will repair a missing Windows file.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the main repair for a missing or corrupted bthsqm.dll. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the component source that SFC uses.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait until it completes. Do not close the window because progress appears to pause during servicing.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait for verification to reach 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the program again.
A successful repair may report that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them. If the application now opens normally, the protected Windows copy was probably the issue.
If you prefer not to spend time manually identifying which Windows component or dependency changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair actions are handled by the full version. It is optional, and repairing or reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the failure.
If DISM fails
DISM may use Windows Update as its repair source. If Windows Update is itself damaged, the command may return an error instead of restoring the component.
In that situation:
- Restart Windows.
- Install any remaining updates.
- Run the DISM command again.
- Run
sfc /scannowagain afterward.
If it still fails, use a matching Windows installation source with the /Source and /LimitAccess options as described in Microsoft’s System File Checker repair guidance. The source must match the installed Windows edition and build closely enough for servicing to use it.
Recommended Free Tools
If SFC reports that it found corruption but could not repair some files, do not download bthsqm.dll from a search result. Review the CBS servicing log, rerun DISM, and consider an in-place Windows repair installation.
Fix 3: Use Windows 11’s repair reinstall
Supported Windows 11 installations may offer a repair option that reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
The option may be unavailable on managed work or school computers, or on systems that do not meet Microsoft’s requirements. If you do not see it, use DISM and SFC first, then consider an installation-media repair.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a legitimate system file after a false detection. Check the quarantine history before attempting any replacement.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving
bthsqm.dll.
Restore a quarantined file only if you have confirmed that the detection is false and that the file is a genuine Microsoft-signed system file. Do not allow an item merely because restoring it makes an application start. If the detection is unclear, leave it blocked and run a current security scan.
If malware may have modified Windows, disconnect sensitive accounts from the machine, back up personal files carefully, and use Microsoft’s Windows recovery options.
Fix 5: Repair the affected application
If the error appears only when launching one program, the application may be damaged or may be calling a missing dependency.
First check whether the program has a built-in repair option:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only after confirming that its local data and settings are backed up.
For a desktop application without those options:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
- Reinstall only from the developer’s official installer or launcher.
For a game, use its official launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent function for the game files. That process is appropriate for files owned by the game. It is not a source for replacing a Windows system DLL.

If the program is old, check whether it supports your Windows version. An older bthsqm.dll record does not prove that a legacy application is compatible with current Windows.
Fix 6: Update Bluetooth drivers from the proper source
bthsqm.dll is associated with the Windows Bluetooth stack, but replacing a Windows DLL is not the same as updating a Bluetooth driver.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Bluetooth.
- Right-click the Bluetooth adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
You can also visit the computer or adapter manufacturer’s official support page and install the driver intended for your exact model and Windows version. Avoid driver packages that do not identify the hardware they support.
If you are tired of hunting through model numbers and comparing several driver packages, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and a program-specific reinstall remains the correct fix when only one application fails.
A driver update will not normally restore a deleted protected Windows component. Run DISM and SFC when the file itself is missing or corrupted.
Do not use Windows Features or regsvr32 for this file
Windows Features is not a general DLL repair mechanism. Do not enable random optional features hoping that one will recreate bthsqm.dll. Only enable a Windows feature when a specific application or Microsoft instruction requires it.
regsvr32 is also usually the wrong tool:
regsvr32 bthsqm.dll
This command applies to DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore a missing Windows component, repair its servicing store, or fix a missing dependency. Running it can produce another error and distract from the actual problem.

Use DISM and SFC for Windows component repair. Use the application’s installer for application-owned files.
Why manually downloading bthsqm.dll is unsafe
Do not download bthsqm.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. A downloaded file may have:
- The wrong Windows version
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- An invalid or unverifiable signature
- A damaged dependency chain
- Malicious modifications
It may also hide the original cause, such as component-store corruption, an incomplete update, or a damaged application.
The safe sources are Windows servicing itself, Windows Update, Microsoft installation media, the official application installer, and the hardware manufacturer’s official driver package.

On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit applications and 64-bit Windows components follow different loading rules. Do not substitute a file based only on its size, filename, or Windows edition.
If the problem still remains
Use the next recovery step that matches the timing:
- System Restore: Use it if a suitable restore point predates the error. Open Start, search for Create a restore point, open it, select System Restore, and choose an earlier point. It normally rolls back system files, drivers, updates, registry settings, and installed programs without removing personal files.
- Disk investigation: If DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, investigate disk health and servicing logs. Repeated repair failures can indicate filesystem or storage problems.
- In-place repair installation: Use matching Windows installation media to repair Windows while preserving personal files and, where supported, applications.
- Clean reinstall: Reserve this for severe corruption or suspected malware after backing up personal files and confirming that you have the required application installers and account access.
FAQ
Is bthsqm.dll malware?
The filename is associated with a genuine Microsoft Windows Bluetooth component. A file with that name can still be malicious if it is in an unexpected location, unsigned, or detected by security software. Check the detection and file signature instead of trusting the filename alone.
Is bthsqm.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No verified evidence identifies it as one of those redistributable runtimes. Treat it as a Windows Bluetooth-related component and repair Windows first.
Should I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?
No. The correct location and architecture are not established by old third-party file records for every current Windows installation. Let DISM and SFC restore the correct protected copy.
Does a 32-bit Windows record mean I need a 32-bit DLL?
No. A database label does not determine the correct file for your installation. Windows and the application must use compatible architectures and versions.
Why does the program say the module is missing when the file exists?
A dependency may be missing, the file may be corrupted, or the application may be loading an incompatible binary. Repair Windows, then repair the application rather than repeatedly copying the named DLL.
Will reinstalling Bluetooth hardware fix it?
Only if the underlying issue is a damaged or incompatible Bluetooth driver. It will not replace a corrupted Windows component or repair an application that carries its own damaged files.
