Find the key in YouTube Studio under Create > Go Live > Stream. Copy the matching stream URL and key into your encoder or Nginx relay, then confirm that your particular Nginx RTMP build supports the destination protocol YouTube provides. YouTube recommends RTMPS; RTMP relay support alone does not prove a build can connect to YouTube over RTMPS.
Before you configure Nginx: confirm the channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its getting-started guidance currently sets the minimum age at 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming ahead of the event rather than on the day itself. See YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guidance.
Where to find the YouTube stream key and server URL
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live.
- In Live Control Room, open the Stream tab.
- Create a stream or select an existing one. YouTube may load previous stream settings and key; you can also create a custom key for reuse.
- Copy the displayed stream URL and its matching stream key. Put the URL in the encoder or relay’s server/URL field, and the key in its stream-key field. YouTube’s instructions are in Manage live stream settings.
The stream key is a credential: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not disclose it in screenshots, public documentation, source control, or unsecured logs. If it is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; update the encoder or relay with the replacement key before reconnecting. YouTube explains stream-key management here.
How the Nginx RTMP relay fits together
Nginx RTMP is the relay, not the place where you retrieve the YouTube key. The usual arrangement is that an encoder publishes a source stream to an Nginx RTMP application, and that application pushes the stream onward to YouTube. The nginx-rtmp-module project documents RTMP live publishing and relay behavior, including application configuration and remote push.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Exact directives and supported destinations depend on the module and build you installed. Use the directive documentation matching that deployed version; do not assume a configuration copied from another build will work unchanged. The evidence available for the module establishes RTMP relay capabilities, not universal support for making an RTMPS client connection to YouTube.
RTMP or RTMPS: verify the output protocol
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts RTMP traffic with TLS, and provides an RTMPS endpoint through the lock control in Live Control Room’s stream settings. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance. Before configuring the relay, verify that your specific Nginx RTMP module build and operating environment can push to that endpoint over RTMPS.

- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- If the build supports the RTMPS connection YouTube provides, configure the relay using the matching endpoint and key, following that build’s documentation.
- If it does not, use a compatible TLS-capable relay path. Do not silently switch to plain RTMP simply because it is the only protocol your current build accepts.
NGINX Plus and the third-party nginx-rtmp-module are different deployment variants, with distinct installation, module-loading, and operating-system details. For Plus, follow the relevant NGINX RTMP module instructions; for the third-party module, consult its project documentation and the version actually installed. Do not treat one variant’s setup steps as instructions for the other.
Set encoder parameters, then test the feed
Choose settings based on the resolution, frame rate, codec, and available upload bandwidth—not a generic bitrate copied from an unrelated format. YouTube’s current encoder recommendations include RTMP or RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds); AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate encoding. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so select the applicable row in YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Measure the available upload capacity under conditions representative of the stream. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom in its streaming tips.
- Start the encoder and confirm it publishes to the Nginx application; then confirm the relay is forwarding to the YouTube endpoint.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and review stream health before the event. For a scheduled stream, click Go live in Studio only after the preview is ready.
Test before the event, not just after changing settings during it. YouTube’s streaming guidance recommends testing and checking the Live Control Room preview and health information.
Troubleshooting Nginx-to-YouTube connection problems
- No stream appears in Live Control Room: Check that the encoder is publishing to the intended Nginx application, that the relay is active, and that the configured endpoint and key are the matching pair from the Studio stream settings.
- The relay rejects or cannot connect to the YouTube endpoint: Check whether the deployed build supports the endpoint’s protocol, especially RTMPS. RTMP relay support does not by itself establish RTMPS output support. Use a compatible TLS-capable relay path if necessary.
- YouTube does not accept the key: Re-copy the key belonging to the selected stream. If the key was reset after exposure, replace the old value in the encoder or relay.
- Preview or stream health shows problems: Compare the encoder’s codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio format, and bitrate with YouTube’s current recommendations for that exact video format. Check upload capacity and leave the recommended headroom.
- The live option is unavailable: Check channel verification, prior live-stream restrictions, age eligibility, and whether first-time live activation has completed.
- Configuration directives fail after an upgrade or on another server: Verify the module variant and version, then use its matching documentation. A configuration that works with one build is not guaranteed to apply to another.
Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules
Nginx forwarding does not grant rights to the content being streamed or bypass YouTube’s live-stream requirements. Use video, music, and other material you have the right to broadcast, and check YouTube’s current rules and channel restrictions before going live. A technically healthy relay cannot resolve a copyright claim or a channel restriction; review the relevant notices in YouTube Studio.
