The intended changes reach beyond player ratings: EA says the data shapes player tendencies, goalie responses, and the details shown in replays and broadcast overlays. NHL 26 launched on September 12, 2025, for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S; EA’s current NHL features page says NHL 27 is available, so check current catalog and retailer availability before buying.
What ICE-Q 2.0 and NHL EDGE are
ICE-Q 2.0 is EA’s name for the NHL 26 system governing AI decisions and player behavior. NHL EDGE is the real-world tracking data EA says informs it. EA’s August 13, 2025 gameplay deep dive describes tracking skating acceleration and top speed, shot location and velocity, save percentage by zone, player movement heat maps, puck-possession time, zone usage, body orientation, and reaction time. EA says the capture setup uses 14 infrared cameras, puck sensors, and jersey tags; its August 11, 2025 partnership announcement says tracking data is captured at all 32 NHL rinks.

EA says those measurements inform attributes, player tendencies, and presentation. That is a description of the game’s design, not independent proof that NHL 26 is more realistic or performs better than an earlier game.
How tracking data is meant to affect players
Attributes: ratings for physical and shooting traits
EA says NHL EDGE data informs attributes including acceleration, top speed, slap-shot power, and wrist-shot power. Its examples are Connor McDavid’s first strides and Auston Matthews’ release: the aim is for relevant ratings to reflect measured traits. The deep dive does not provide a complete list of changed ratings or a comparative test showing the size of any gameplay difference.

Tendencies: habits on and off the puck
EA says NHL 26 has 22 unique Tendencies at launch. These are intended to guide decisions such as zone entries, spacing, reaction timing, and shooting habits, including when a player does not have the puck. EA illustrates the idea with Leon Draisaitl shooting from tight angles, Alex Ovechkin setting up around his usual left-circle power-play area, and Jacob Trouba timing open-ice hits. These are EA’s examples of design intent, not independent confirmation of how those players behave in every game situation.
What else changes in NHL 26
Goalie positioning and saves
EA describes a Goalie Crease Control System that combines positional logic and pose matching. It is intended to help goalies react to rebounds and changes in puck direction, cover the puck faster, and make getup saves. EA also says goalie behavior is tuned to a goalie’s size and style, and the August 13 deep dive announces over 80 new save animations. Those are publisher-reported launch-era features and counts, not independently measured improvements.

- Play like a superstar in EA SPORTS NHL 26.
- From powerful NHL EDGE data informing how real-life superstars perform in-game to a reimagined Be A Pro mode that immerses you in the stakes and emotions of playing at the highest level, it’s time to show out and tell the world to Check My Game.
X-Factor abilities
EA describes 28 X-Factor abilities across five categories. The reworked system is intended to make abilities more situational, with visual cues when one triggers. The count and category total also appear on EA’s current NHL 26 features page.
Replays and broadcast information
EA says replays and broadcast overlays can surface skating speed, shot angle and release details, threat indicators, and faceoff comparisons. Multi-sequence replays are designed to connect events such as a turnover, a clear, and a save. This is information presented to the player; it is distinct from a change to ratings or AI decision-making.

Vision Control and skill moves
EA says it adjusted repeated Vision Control pivot overrides that could occur when moving forward, particularly with aggressive up-ice use. It also added toe drags while moving backward or laterally, plus a fake-shot animation that can pass directly out of the move.
