What does “best-selling” mean in this ranking?
Here, “best-selling” means the highest reported dollar sales, not the most copies sold. Because the report gives only positions, it does not establish how large the sales differences were between games or how many units any title moved. NPD’s tracking also depends on data supplied by participating retailers and publishers; some sales may not be represented. That limitation is a general caveat, not evidence that any specific game on this 2019 list is missing or undercounted. More on NPD/Circana tracking coverage.
The ranking is an overall annual list, not a platform-by-platform chart. GamesBeat also reported separate charts for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo 3DS; their placements should not be substituted for the overall order above.

How did the wider U.S. video-game market perform in 2019?
GamesBeat, reporting NPD figures, said U.S. sales across video-game hardware, full-game software, accessories, and game cards totaled $14.581 billion in 2019, 13% below 2018’s $16.695 billion. Full-game software dollar sales were $6.6 billion, down 9%; hardware sales were $3.9 billion, down 22% from $5 billion; and accessories and game cards brought in $4.1 billion, down 7% from $4.4 billion. These are category totals, not sales figures for the 20 individual games. The NPD figures as reported by GamesBeat.
Activision Blizzard’s 2019 annual report, published in 2020, said the top 10 titles accounted for 33% of U.S. interactive-entertainment retail sales that year, citing NPD. This is a share of the stated retail-sales measure, not a figure that supplies the missing dollar totals for individual games. Activision Blizzard annual reports.
