In NHL skater statistics, a player’s points total is their goals plus their assists: P = G + A. The scorer gets one point for a credited goal, and as many as two teammates may each get one point for an assist. These are individual scoring points—not the points a team earns in the league standings.
How NHL player points are counted
The NHL records goals (G), assists (A), and points (P) as separate columns. Add a player’s credited goals and assists to get their points total. For example, 25 goals plus 40 assists equals 65 points; that is an arithmetic illustration, not a player’s season record.
Each credited goal adds one point to the scorer’s total, and each credited assist adds one point to the assisting player’s total. A player can receive only one point on a particular goal, so the scorer does not also receive an assist for that same goal. The NHL skater statistics table shows G, A, and P separately.
Who gets the goal and assists?
The goal scorer
The goal is credited to the last player on the scoring team to touch the puck before it enters the net, according to the NHL glossary. That player receives one point.

Assist recipients
A goal can have up to two assists. The assisting players must have touched the puck before the scorer, and the usual assist condition does not apply if a defender played or possessed the puck in between. A teammate does not earn an assist simply because they were part of the possession or touched the puck at some point during the play.
Under the NHL’s 2025–26 Official Rules, Rule 33, “An assist is awarded to the player or players (maximum two) who touches the puck prior to the goal scorer, provided no defender plays or possesses the puck in between.” The Official Scorer decides which players receive the goal and assist credits.

How to read the other scoring columns
Power-play and shorthanded columns describe scoring in particular situations; they are not extra points to add on top of P. The NHL skater table includes these related fields:
- PPG: power-play goals.
- PPP: power-play points.
- SHG: shorthanded goals.
- SHP: shorthanded points.
Use the overall P column for a player’s total goals-and-assists points. Use the situation-specific columns to see how some of those scoring plays occurred.

Player points are different from team standings points
“Points” can also mean the points a team earns in the league standings. A player’s P total is an individual scoring statistic made from goals and assists; a team’s standings points are a separate measure of its results. When looking at a broadcast graphic or stats page, check whether it is showing a skater or a team standings table.

When comparing a player’s numbers, make sure the records cover the same competition. The NHL provides separate regular-season and playoff skater records through its statistics pages. Its digital records platform announcement describes sortable official records for regular seasons and playoffs, along with historical scoring records; it was published on September 17, 2018, and does not establish current live totals.

Who can change a scoring decision?
Under the published 2025–26 NHL Official Rules, the Official Scorer awards goals and assists. A team representative may request a scoring change within 24 hours after a game; the League Official Scorer reviews the request and makes the final decision. The NHL Video Rulebook page links to a 2026–27 rulebook, but this explanation describes the provisions verified in the 2025–26 rules rather than claiming a review of the complete 2026–27 text.
The rulebook also allows assists on a goal awarded by the referee if the scorer judges that the assists would have applied to the eventual goal.
