A three-point night in hockey means one player recorded three scoring points in a single game. In the NHL, points are goals plus assists: each goal is one point for its scorer, and each credited assist is one point for the player who earned it. The phrase describes an individual player’s scoring line, not the team’s league-standings points.
How a player earns three points
A player reaches three points by adding their goals and assists for that game. The phrase gives the total, not the exact mix, so the game’s box score or scoring summary is needed to see how the player got there.
| Goals | Assists | Total points |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | 3 |
| 2 | 1 | 3 |
| 3 | 0 | 3 |
| 0 | 3 | 3 |
For example, the Seattle Kraken described Matty Beniers’s one-goal, two-assist line as a three-point night in a 2024 game recap (Kraken recap). Three goals also add up to three points, as does a line of three assists.
How NHL goals and assists are credited
Under Rule 33 of the NHL’s 2025–26 Official Rules, the Official Scorer credits one point to the scorer of each goal and one point to each player awarded an assist. A goal can have no more than two assists, so one scoring play cannot give the same player all three points of a three-point night.

The NHL’s assist glossary explains the key eligibility condition: up to two players who touched the puck before the scorer may receive an assist, provided a defender did not play or possess the puck in between. The rule states: “An assist is awarded to the player or players (maximum two) who touches the puck prior to the goal scorer, provided no defender plays or possesses the puck in between.”

- It does not necessarily mean three goals. The total may include assists, such as one goal and two assists.
- It does not mean three players scored. It refers to the point total of one player.
- It does not mean the team earned three standings points. Player scoring points come from goals and assists; standings points are used to track team results. The Kraken’s standings explainer discusses the team-level meaning.
NHL coverage also uses the phrase for different scoring combinations; for instance, the league’s Three Stars of the Night feature from December 5, 2025, shows varied goal-and-assist stat lines. Check the individual game’s scoring summary to confirm a particular player’s breakdown.
