NHRA drag racing has four professional categories—Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle—but those are only a small part of the sport. NHRA’s official overview describes more than 200 classes grouped into 15 eliminators. What separates them is not just how fast the vehicles are: class rules can specify vehicle type, engine, weight, modifications and aerodynamics, while the race format determines how the start is handled.
How NHRA classes and race formats work
A class is a rules package for eligible vehicles; an eliminator groups classes for competition. NHRA’s official class overview identifies three common ways those vehicles race:
- Heads-up: Vehicles in the same category start together. NHRA lists Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, Pro Stock Motorcycle, Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street and Pro Mod as heads-up categories.
- Handicap starts: Cars in different classes can compete with adjusted starts. NHRA identifies Comp, Super Stock and Stock as handicap-start groups.
- Bracket-style: Each driver selects a dial-in time, an estimate of how quickly their vehicle will run. The start is adjusted around those dial-ins, and running quicker than a driver’s dial-in can trigger a breakout loss. NHRA lists Top Dragster and Top Sportsman in this format.
That distinction helps explain why NHRA fields can include very different vehicles: they do not all compete under one universal heads-up format.
The four NHRA professional categories

These are NHRA’s descriptive overview figures, not a complete technical rulebook or a guarantee for every run. Elapsed times and speeds are not a simple ranking across categories: the vehicles have different rules and designs.

Top Fuel versus Funny Car
The quickest visual distinction is the vehicle shape and driver position. A Top Fuel car is an exposed, open-wheel dragster with the driver seated centrally. A Funny Car hides a broadly similar nitro powertrain beneath a coupe-like body, with its driver behind the engine. Their published performance ranges are close enough that appearance—not a blanket claim that one is always faster—is the clearest basic difference.
What “Pro Stock” means
“Factory hot rods” is a common shorthand for Pro Stock because the cars look like production models. They are not ordinary showroom cars, however: NHRA describes tube chassis and tightly controlled engine and fuel specifications. NHRA announced that 2027 Pro Stock rules will restore hood scoops and replace the single forward-facing throttle body with two top-mounted, four-barrel-style throttle bodies. Electronic fuel injection remains. Those are announced changes for 2027, not the rules already in force during 2026.

Other major NHRA classes
Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car
These categories resemble their nitro counterparts but have distinct engine and fuel combinations. NHRA’s overview describes Top Alcohol Dragster with either supercharged methanol or injected nitromethane options; its Top Alcohol Funny Car description covers methanol and a three-speed transmission. In November 2025, NHRA announced a supercharged nitromethane combination for both classes beginning in 2026, alongside traditional options, and 24 combined events across the Mission Foods and Lucas Oil series that season. The announcement makes Top Alcohol a distinct category group with multiple combinations, not simply another name for Top Fuel or Funny Car.
Pro Mod
Pro Mod is a doorslammer class—cars with doors and full-bodied shapes—with a mix of classic and late-model styles. NHRA’s 2026 series feature describes superchargers, turbochargers and nitrous oxide as power-adder options. That variety means cars can look or work very differently while sharing the category’s competition framework.

Comp, Super Stock and Stock
These are broad groups that use handicap starts, letting unlike combinations race with starts adjusted to class performance indexes. Comp spans a wide range of vehicles and engine combinations, including dragsters, altereds, roadsters, coupes, sedans, sport compacts and trucks. Super Stock allows substantial modification while preserving specified original components. Stock keeps tighter limits on engine and body changes and retains more of the factory configuration.
Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street
These heads-up categories are organized around elapsed-time indexes: NHRA’s overview lists 8.90 seconds for Super Comp, 9.90 for Super Gas and 10.90 for Super Street. The index is the target; a competitor who runs quicker can break out. Super Comp is primarily dragsters, Super Gas mainly full-bodied cars and roadsters, and Super Street requires full-bodied cars. Indexes are rule details that can change, so consult the current NHRA rulebook for the applicable event and season.

Top Dragster and Top Sportsman
These are fast bracket categories. Top Dragster uses open-wheel vehicles; Top Sportsman uses full-bodied cars. Drivers select dial-ins and race with handicap starts, with the breakout rule applying. Dial-ins allow vehicles expected to run at different elapsed times to compete within the same bracket format.

Top Fuel is the clearest answer if “fastest” means the category most associated with the shortest elapsed times and highest speeds: NHRA’s overview describes runs under 3.7 seconds and speeds above 330 mph. But that is a general class description, not a current record table. It should not be read as proof that every Top Fuel pass beats every Funny Car pass, or as a claim about records at a particular track. For a record comparison, specify the event, distance and record category rather than treating general overview figures as season statistics.

What the 2026 schedule announcements say
NHRA announced Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock for all 20 events on the 2026 Mission Foods Drag Racing Series schedule. Pro Stock Motorcycle was announced for 14 events plus a separate Sonoma Callout. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car were announced for 24 combined events across the Mission Foods and Lucas Oil series. These are season schedule announcements, not claims that every category races at every NHRA event.
