Niantic Really Did Use Player-Contributed Pokémon GO Scans for Geospatial AI—But the Military Claims Need Context

Niantic really did use voluntary AR scans from Pokémon GO and other products for geospatial AI—but that is not the same as using every player’s location history or proving raw scans trained military drones.

Yes—but the headline needs precision. Niantic said it used voluntary AR scans of real-world locations, submitted through its products including Pokémon GO, to help build a Large Geospatial Model. That does not mean every player’s ordinary gameplay, location history, or Pokémon captures were used, nor does the public record prove that raw Pokémon GO scans were sold to train military drones.

What Niantic’s geospatial AI model actually is

Niantic announced its Large Geospatial Model in November 2024. Despite the AI label, it is not primarily a chatbot or an image generator. It is a machine-learning system intended to understand physical spaces through visual and spatial information.

The technology can help a device determine where it is, reconstruct or complete a 3D representation of its surroundings, and connect views of the same place taken from different positions. Niantic described potential uses including augmented-reality glasses, robots, autonomous systems, and other spatial-computing devices.

Visual positioning in plain English

GPS might tell your phone that it is near a park. A visual-positioning system can compare what the phone’s camera sees—a building entrance, statue, sign, or other landmark—with a learned 3D map. It can then estimate the device’s position and orientation, helping digital objects remain anchored to the same physical location.

Niantic has claimed centimeter-level positioning in some deployments. That is a company capability claim, not a guarantee of that accuracy everywhere, on every device, or under all lighting and weather conditions.

What Pokémon GO players contributed

Some players were offered AR mapping tasks at real-world points of interest. A participant could move around a landmark while recording a short video or sequence of images with the phone’s camera. Those frames could provide different viewpoints, visual features, geometry, and location information for building or improving a spatial map. Players were generally offered in-game incentives for completing the tasks.

This is different from simply playing Pokémon GO. Ordinary gameplay involves location and other telemetry needed to operate a location-based game, but walking, catching Pokémon, visiting a PokéStop, or opening the app is not the same as deliberately submitting an AR scan.

Niantic’s privacy materials describe broader categories of information, including location, gameplay actions, device information, and camera or sensor data. However, the company’s public explanation of model building specifically focused on voluntary scans and imagery of real-world places. The exact contribution of every category of Pokémon GO data to the model has not been publicly documented in full.

Was the model trained only on Pokémon GO data?

No. Niantic described a broader geospatial data ecosystem involving scans from its games and its Scaniverse 3D-scanning app. That means “Pokémon GO data” is an incomplete shorthand.

Niantic said it was receiving about 1 million fresh scans per week, with each scan potentially containing hundreds of individual images. It later described a proprietary database containing more than 30 billion posed images.

That figure should not be described as 30 billion Pokémon GO scans, 30 billion players, or even 30 billion separate uploads. “Posed images” can include individual frames from videos, and the wider total includes material from multiple products. The number is also a claim made by Niantic, not an independently audited count.

The corporate split changed who controlled what

The timing matters because “Niantic” no longer refers to one company handling both the games and the geospatial business.

  • November 2024: Niantic publicly announced its Large Geospatial Model and its use of player-contributed scans.
  • March 2025: Niantic announced that Scopely would acquire its games business. The deal was described as a $3.5 billion purchase, plus a $350 million distribution to Niantic equity holders.
  • May 29, 2025: The transaction closed. Scopely took over the games business, including Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, Monster Hunter Now, Campfire, and Wayfarer.
  • May 2025 onward: The geospatial operation became Niantic Spatial, which launched with $250 million in funding.

After the split, Scopely operates Pokémon GO, while Niantic Spatial operates the separate geospatial-AI business.

What happened with Vantor and military applications?

In June 2026, reports linked Niantic Spatial’s technology with Vantor, a company involved in satellite, intelligence, and navigation systems. The reports prompted headlines suggesting that Pokémon GO scans had been sold to the military or used to train drones.

Those headlines go further than the available evidence. Reporting on statements from Niantic Spatial said:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Pokémon GO data is not currently shared with Niantic Spatial after the Scopely transaction.
  • Earlier AR scans were voluntarily submitted and governed by the terms and privacy policy in force when they were submitted.
  • AR scanning was discontinued during the transition to Scopely.
  • Vantor does not receive the actual Pokémon GO data, according to the reported company position.

The important distinction is between raw data and derived technology. A company can use imagery to develop a model, map, or visual-positioning system without giving a later customer the original images. A relationship involving Niantic Spatial’s positioning technology does not, by itself, prove that raw Pokémon GO scans were transferred to Vantor or that a particular military drone was directly trained on them.

Public reporting supports the possibility of defense-related or autonomous-system applications for the derived technology. It does not establish a completed deployment of a specific military system using raw Pokémon GO scans.

See the reporting from Game Developer, Kotaku, and Ars Technica for the distinction between the underlying imagery and the geospatial technology associated with it.

Did players meaningfully consent?

There are two separate questions here.

Formal consent: available evidence indicates that AR scanning was an opt-in activity and that submissions were covered by the applicable Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Meaningful informed consent: it is less clear whether an ordinary player understood that a scan submitted for an in-game reward could help support a commercial geospatial-AI platform, potentially serving enterprise, robotics, autonomous-navigation, or defense-related customers.

A privacy policy can establish the legal framework a company relies on, but it cannot by itself prove that users understood every future technical or commercial consequence. Conversely, the existence of later controversy does not prove that the feature was secretly enabled for every player.

Players could also fall into different categories. Someone may have played for years without ever completing an AR scan. Someone else may have scanned a public landmark without realizing that a video could contribute hundreds of separate frames to a much larger image corpus. Children and family accounts create additional consent questions; Niantic’s privacy policy contains special provisions for children, but those provisions do not resolve every question about model training.

Why this data can be valuable

Ground-level scans offer information that satellite imagery and conventional maps often cannot. They can show the visual details of entrances, paths, statues, walls, signs, and other objects from multiple angles. Repeated scans can also help a system recognize a location despite changes in viewpoint or time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes the data potentially useful for:

  • AR localization and persistent digital overlays;
  • robot and autonomous-system navigation;
  • 3D reconstruction and digital twins;
  • mapping in places where GPS is weak or unavailable;
  • industrial and enterprise spatial applications; and
  • satellite, aerial, intelligence, or defense-related systems.

These are potential applications, not proof that Niantic Spatial has deployed its technology in every listed market.

What players should understand now

AR scanning has reportedly been discontinued, and Niantic Spatial says current Pokémon GO data is no longer shared with it. That does not automatically mean all historical scans were deleted. The available sources do not establish that every historical scan was erased, or whether specific contributions can be removed from a trained model.

Players concerned about their information should review the current Pokémon GO/Scopely privacy policy and available account-data or deletion controls. Because the game changed ownership, current requests and policies may involve Scopely rather than Niantic Spatial. Do not assume that stopping a feature, deleting an account, or ending data sharing necessarily reverses information already incorporated into a derived model.

What a commercial customer would actually be buying

Niantic Spatial is an enterprise geospatial-AI business, not a consumer map subscription. Its commercial offering may involve access to a visual-positioning system, 3D map, API, model, or integrated navigation capability. The customer may not receive the original player-contributed imagery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No public self-serve pricing was identified for Niantic Spatial or Vantor. A serious buyer would need to ask about:

  • coverage in the target geography;
  • indoor and outdoor localization;
  • accuracy under changing light, weather, and seasons;
  • camera, sensor, cloud, and edge-computing requirements;
  • latency and update frequency;
  • data residency, privacy, and sensitive-location controls;
  • whether the contract provides raw imagery, derived maps, model access, or only an API; and
  • commercial, defense, and export-control restrictions.

Scaniverse is related to 3D capture and reconstruction, but it should not be treated as a direct substitute for Niantic Spatial’s enterprise infrastructure.

The accurate version of the story

The core claim is real: Niantic publicly said that voluntary real-world scans contributed through its products, including Pokémon GO, helped build a geospatial AI effort. The misleading version is that every player’s location history was secretly fed into an AI model or that raw Pokémon GO photos were proven to have been sold to a military contractor.

The public record supports a more specific account: AR scans were one part of a broader dataset; the model was intended for visual mapping and positioning; the games business moved to Scopely on May 29, 2025; and Niantic Spatial says current Pokémon GO data is no longer shared with it. Questions about historical use, user understanding, model retention, and future defense applications remain separate from the basic fact that the original scans helped build Niantic’s geospatial technology.
